The Emanuel Lasky Story
Music Now

Emanuel Taylor wrote several songs for the Music Now label, one of Dr. William Kyle’s Detroit Sound stable that also included De-To.

“When things just don’t seem to go right,
She’s always here in me arms holding me tight.”
Just The Way (I Want Her To Be)

Trumpet player and arranger Floyd Jones was involved in music-loving Dr. Williams Kyle’s dabble in the recording business – his name appears on some of the releases on DeTo, including the one shown above, a deep soul gem by D and Joe.

Dr. Kyle ran his music business - The Detroit Sound Recording Company - from a studio above his clinic at 8311 Grand River Avenue. Dr. Kyle’s sons, Robin and Chip, played bass and drums on some sessions, along with Emanuel Taylor on organ and Billy Smith on guitar. And although Brian Speers was the main engineer, it wasn’t quite up to United Sound’s standard. Emanuel recalled people practicing in the room while he was recording Just The Way I Want Her To Be.

But perhaps it was that unfamiliar environment that accentuated the vulnerability in Emanuel’s voice, giving his delivery a semblance of David Ruffin at his most husky and soulful. He wasn’t sure if the recording – basically done as a demo - was ever finished, so was pretty surprised when he heard it on the radio – just once. Like many of his 45s, it’s now a collector’s item.

The session was produced by one Motown’s original Satintones, Charles “Chico” Leverett, and written by Emanuel Taylor, who was Dr. Kyle’s main writer at Music Now. You can see above that he also wrote June Taylor’s (no relation) Jealous Heart and cut a funky 45, It Ain’t Right”.
