The
Johnnie Mae Matthews
Story
Her Man
|
|
The
Art label was named after Johnnie Mae's husband, Artwell.
These
two discs should be filed under: Unadulterated Detroit Soul |
Now we're living in a
post-Spice-Girl-power century it's often easy to forget
just how difficult it was for women to make serious headway
in the male-dominated recording industry. Johnnie Mae was
one of the first black women to actively own a recording
company and if you listen to her sing "Don't Talk
About My Man" - a song she wrote for her husband,
Art - you'll get a taste of her spunky personality and
irrepressible vitality. I'm sure it's a song that Posh
Spice's soccer playing husband David Beckham would die
for.

Two recordings that are quintessential
Sixties Detroit are the Melvin Davis penned "Lonely
You'll Be" and the flawless, big-money Big Hit 45
"I Have No Choice." The later song
poignantly portrays a losing lover's sad predicament which
Johnnie Mae renders with soulfulness that is both
understated and overwhelming. "To have to sit here
and watch you walk away, it's no joy. It's your move to
make. I have no choice."
"Lonely You'll Be" takes
a more affirmative stance and is given an appropriately
indignant delivery from Johnnie Mae. Her venomous voice
dovetails into a pulsating brassy track which has vibes
subtly bubbling below the surface. Both of these discs
should be filed under: Unadulterated Detroit Soul.
