The Johnnie Mae Matthews Story
Black Nasty

Vocalist Audrey and drummer Artwell Matthews Jr. are in the bottom-right of this ADC Band promotional photo, used on the front of their 1978 "Long Stroke" album.

Unsurprisingly Johnnie Mae's son and daughter followed in her footsteps with their group, Black Nasty, and kicked off her Tank label in '73 with a version of The Supremes' hit "You Keep My Hanging On.

They later released a handful of 45s on Big Hit before evolving into The ADC Band, and Johnnie Mae produced their funky albums released by Cotillion. The group backed Johnnie Mae on several recordings, such as her later Northern 45s.

Her daughter also recorded as a solo artist, using the name Kaiya, cutting a song called "Kago" in 1987 that Soul Survivor magazine writer Rick Pack chose as his "Record of the Year."
