David, I hope it's OK to advise some of our American cousins about another site that they may find interesting;
http://www.ritchie-hardin.com/soul/mcmems00.html

I hope that I've typed it correctly.

When The Sunliners were playing The Webwood in 1961 a very young Willy Tyler with Lester would come in and do an occasional show. We had a good time with him. It was around this time that the infamous Rosie appeared on the scene.

There was another young singer making the rounds in Detroit in those days. His name was Danny Woods. The Sunliners backed him up many times and he never failed to bring the house down. He even showed up in New York when we were at The Peppermint Lounge.
We brought him up to sing and he tore the place up. I would run into him again in later years at Tera Shirma when he was there to record. For some reason I think Clay McMurray was producing him. He never really took off like I thought he would. Any of you guys familiar with the name?
I always wondered what became of him. An incredible talent.

Ralph you surely don't mean Danny Woods of Chairmen Of The Board fame...

Ralph!!!!

I see Rosie had more of an effect on you than you are letting us believe!!

Back to the music...I have Danny Woods on Come On And Dance - on Smash.....arranged and co-produced by McKinly Jackson (note spelling) and also co-produced by Bob Babbitt. Everybody and his dog surely has the Chairmen of the Board records..

John,
Are you telling me that Danny Woods is THE Danny Woods I'm refering to? If that's the case, that is a pleasant surprise. I wonder if it is. That's right...it was Bob Babbit producing Danny. Thanks for reminding me. I remember Babbit telling me how Danny once flew up the control room steps after a particuar take to hear it in the control room.
John my boy...what can I tell you....the world needs more Rosies.

I think Danny was originally from the south and came to Detroit to record for Wilbur Golden's Correc-Tone company on Grand River. His 45 is called "You Had Me Fooled."
He also recorded "90 Days In A County Jail" on Smash, but unfortunately this was released at the time of the riots (July 67) and consequently bombed.
I'm sure Danny died quite a few years ago.

John,
My partner at Powerhouse..Teddie Morrow...says basically the same thing. How great it would have been to be in Detroit at that time and what did I think of it at the time etc. etc.Either I was young or naive or both at the time, but I just thought this was all normal and at times just took it all for granted. It wouldn't be until later years that the realization of what was going on in Detroit really hit me. Now looking back at it all I can say is " WOW"!! Detroit was the greatest music city in the world.
