Does anyone know who is on the Supremes' "Nathan Jones" single? To me, it's so atypical of the Supremes -- a dirtier sound than usual, and so much phasing! It's a great record in my opinion, and rather daring for the "Supremes" brand name. Did Frank Wilson have a vision for this record, or was the phasing an accident?

NATHAN JONES IS AN OLD AFRICAN-AMERICAN EUPHANISM
FOR BEING BROKE. SO I GATHER THAT THE PHASING EFFECT WAS FRANK TRYING TO BE SURREAL IN HIS APPROACH TO THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT OF BEING DEVOID OF MONRTARY STIPENDS!!!!
THE CORRECT USAGE IN THIS CASE WOULD BE
" MAN,THAT MOTHERFUCKER SO BROKE,HE GOT NATHAN JONES"
OR, "THAT MAN AINT SHIT, HE GOT NATHAN JONES WITH HIM"
IT WAS JEAN TERRELL SINGING THE LEAD.
I HOPE THAT ANSWERS THE QUERY FROM A
SOCIO-ECONOMICAL PERSPECTIVE

Bobby .

I read that Nathan Jones was (almost) a duet between Jean and one of the Blackberries...maybe Sherlie or Clydie and if you listen to the vocal, you can hear another singer.

What really happned....
Frank and I were in the middle of mixing that album. I had already finished mixing Nathan Jones the day before. We were about to start a new tune and I wanted to use the phasing effect on it. (don't remember the name of the song)
But since Nathan Jones was finished and on the 2 track, I wanted to show Frank what the effect sounded like, so I used Nathan Jones as an example.
WELL ... we both liked it on Nathan Jones ... so we used it!

Thanks Bro,
I love this story. It is the classic example of lucky " accidents " in the studio.

What did you do to mix in what sounds like another vocalist on the lead..

I don't remember if there was a double lead track or I might have uses some sort of tape slap effect. To many moons ago!

Thanks for all the great info. It's an awesome track, one that should have been a much bigger hit. And come to think of it, why is oldies radio ignoring this gem? (I already know the answer, it's a rhetorical question).

Just a fantastic track!
