I used to be an idle of Tammy Terrell as a little girl.
She would star at the Howard Theatre in Washington D.C., and she allowed me in her dressing room. I would be her Goffor girl.
Anything she wanted, I would go for it. My God mother ran a soul food place in the same block as the Howard theatre, called Mattie's Place and she would eat there sometimes. I thought she was the prettiest
Woman I had ever saw. I thank her for all the wonderful music and her great presence.

Hi Ludie,

So great to see you on the forum.
I met Thomasina around early 1961, while I was in a band at a club caled The Peppermint Stick on Sansom Street in Philly. She had just had If you see bill on the radio, and she sometimes would sing a song or two with us.
I somehow remember that she was taking some classes at Pierce. I was living at 32nd and Diamond at that time and she came to my house on occasion to hang out and do some songs with my musician friends.
We have a picture that was sent to Vickie of Tammi and Deon Jackson at the Uptown in 1966. I wish that I had some earlier ones from 1961!!
I was so happy when she became successful with Motown, and so sad when I learned of her illness and subsequent passing. Her music will live on eternally.

hi ludie
welcome to the forum.

tammi's album is one of motown's best.

her version of 'this old heart of mine' was played many times at the twisted wheel club in manchester, england in 1970.

it is a track i never tire of and for me is better than the isley brothers version.

your sister has so many fans over here.

best wishes
david

There will always be a place in our hearts for Tammi Terrell. I bought the 'This old heart of mine' single in the early seventies. At that time I knew little about her, just that the record was a good version of a track I had by Donnie Elbert, on MOJO records, here in the UK. Now I know much more about her and so pleased she sings for me weekly, if not daily. I even wrote a song about her 2 years ago called 'Dear Tammi'. I miss her too and wish I had seen her perform. Nevertheless, her spirit is close by and in heaven she's a star!

Ludie,

Your sister was not only a wonderful singer, but she had such a spark, especially onstage with Marvin -- thank goodness we can still see that in the videos still around, I have one of them on some TV show that's great.

Dear Sister Ludie,
I forgot to give you the best part of my story of adoration for Tammy (Montgomery) Terrell. She inspired me to go on to write such songs as "Love Won't Let Me Wait", "The Sideshow", "I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely" and many others with my Partner, Bobby Eli from Philly. I still write along with selling Real estate, have 4 grown kids and 3 Grands. I am so thrilled that you carry on her legacy. There should be a book written, telling her story and I know you are working on it right now, if not before now. God bless you always. It is a pleasure to write to you.

Hi Ludie

Tammi has a very special place in our hearts, and her music never fades. We're all looking forward immensely to the book, so I hope Vickie will keep us informed of its progress. The Complete Duets is a wonderful tribute, and hopefully will introduce a new generation to her talent.

I overheard my 14-year-old daughter listening to an MP3 of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" the other day. I asked her who if she knew who it was and where it came from. She said "I've no idea, but she's a great singer!" So, the legacy continues into another generation.

Hi, L. I've just received word of the Soulful Detroit site & of your postings in this forum. I visited T's grave back in May '99; it was the best trip of my life. I'm so excited about your pending book about T, I'm gonna buy it the minute it reaches bookstores in my hometown. I was briefly in touch with your son Kirk back in Dec '98-Jan '99; he said his own daughter wanted to grow up following the footsteps of her great-aunt. Tammi has always been one of my favorite Motown Ladies. I always thought of Tammi as a kind of Ghost Lady (LOL) because there is very little written about her. Not too much personal info except people trying to stir up scandal & gossip. I will look for Ludie's Book because it will set the record straight. A Loyal Tammi Fan. Randy Bridges Columbus, Ohio. PS; Is the house still standing that Tammi grew up in On York St? I plan on coming to Philly someday to take photos of Places that were a part of Tammi's life, any sugestions?

I am a fan of Tammi's she is one of my favourite singers to this day. I was just 16 when she died and I was heartbroken and cryed for days.
I am so looking forward to reading your book about her life.

Hello Ludie,
I am so honoured that my words may be read by Tammi's sister, I have been a Fan of Tammi since 1969,when I bought my first single "Good Lovin Ain't Easy" but I thought the B side was fantastic "Can't believe you love me"
I couldn't get enough of Tammi's fantastic voice
and started collecting her material.
I always remember hearing of her death, Alan Freeman announced it on The Hit Parade.. I was devastated. I was 14 at the time..
Since then I have been a Mobile DJ and always played her version of This Old Heart Of Mine and Can't Stop Now Love is Calling from her Album
Irresistable.
Recently when I do a Gig I play her solo version of Two Can Have a Party.. it goes down really well
It's so sad that we lost her as she would have become a bigger Superstar, Long Live Her Memory, I really look forward to your book as there isn't a lot of interesting material around for her fans,
Very Best Wishes,

Keith Coventry UK

Yesterday, May 24th, Franny from the Sons ... and I went over to Mt. Lawn Cemetary where Tammi is interred. We first stopped to visit my late wife Gigi's grave, and then went across the road to the office to enquire on the location of Tammi's grave but were unable to locate it so we will return next week for a more detailed guide.
We did visit the graves of blues great Bessie Smith and r and b organist Bill Doggett famous for "Honky Tonk"
It was a glorious day and mockingbirds were chirping and pheasants were strolling all about.

amazing - just amazing...

FYI - the forthcoming 'Cellarful of Motown' collection has Tammi's ORIGINAL version (from 1966) of "All I Do Is Think About You," co-written by a young Stevie Wonder. It became "ALL I DO" when Stevie cut it himself as an adult for the 'Hotter Than July' LP in 1980. Tammi's is so good it's just astonishing it never came out in '66.

I love reading these memeroies about someone we've known mostly from the Marvin duets.

I was very fortunate to have met and know Tammi in the early sixties around the time of If You See Bill. She became a good friend and came to my home on various occasions to hang out with the fledgling Eli here and his cast of future sessioneers. She used to come to this club called the Peppermint Stick where I had a band called the Peppersint Sticks and sing a song or two.
For al of you serious collectors out there , we had a record on the So-Char label called "El Twisto. It was a piece of crap albeit a start and a pivitol time in my life.
One night while Tammi was there, the actor Sal Mineo was in town and came to the club. A fight broke out when a gun fell out of the jacket of the club manager/m.c. and he got hit in the face when a slice of pizza flew across the room.
Ahh!! Such memories, and yet another Tammi connection!!

I hope not only that the Ernie myth is debunked once & for all, but that the same will go for the myth about M & T being real-life lovers. The way they acted onstage, they may have led many fans to believe they were. But they weren't, & if I recall right from reading Divided Soul, M told his biographer that a real-life romance wouldn't have worked. M could get along well with women with whom he was just friends (Mary Wells, Kim Weston, even T), but not too well with Anna & Jan.

As far as the Ernie myth goes, this is how I suspect it got started: Some reporter was told something vague, like "T was related to a boxer." T was actually the niece of another boxer, Bob Montgomery, & the reporter might have confused him with Ernie. When one reporter is misguided like that, the error can spread to a lot of articles. Rolling Stone's Encyclopedia of Rock (1995) does say that T was NOT married to Ernie. However, it also says she was briefly married to someone else (they don't say whom) & that her birthdate was January 24, 1946. She was actually born April 29, 1945, & never married at all; Terrell was simply a stage name, & I doubt she ever even knew Ernie. Some people--I guess if it's not one thing they get wrong, it's another.

Re T's grave, my cousin & I were able to find it when we went to Philly 3 years ago. As I recall, if you face the cemetery office building, then walk left on Walkway...A, B, some first letter like that. Somewhere to your right of the walkway is a Montgomery grave with Thomasina at the left & her parents, Thomas & Jennie, at the right. As a footnote, one night later in our hotel room, my cousin was channel-surfing the TV, & when he landed on Ally McBeal, a couple on the show sang YPL. I guess that was T's way of telling us thanks for laying flowers at her resting place.

I didn't get a chance to see Germantown that time, but if I ever go to Philly again, I hope to see that section, because T lived there & also because George Washington did at one time, & some Revolutionary battle was fought there.

Thanks, L, for posting here again. We fans very much appreciate your input.

According to Mary Wilson in her 1st a-b, Dreamgirl, a lot of fans favored T as a replacement for Diana Ross in the Supes, but her illness, of course, precluded that. The gal who DID fill Diana's shoes was JEAN Terrell; CTPB, she was not related to T, as has been mentioned above. Another 70s Supreme, however, was: Lynda Laurence, distant cousin. Lynda has her own website at http://www.mslyndalaurence.com She also is happy to reply to fans' e-mail, just so they show her courtesy & respect.

I remember Paul Gambaccine interviewing Marvin Gaye On UK radio quite a few years ago now and was always baffled by his remarks concerning Tammi's death, He said that he understood the bottom line of her death, but wouldn't continue the conversation. I thought at the time he had said this because of his strong religious beliefs
This has always stayed in my mind and of course since then I have read all the rumours.
I also remember another interview with Johnny Bristol in which he said that Tammi sang on the backing tracks and was known as a "Riff Sister" I thought that was so cool..

I am really looking forward to T's bio by her sister. Ludie, I think that your closeness with your sister during her lifetime reminds me of how close my sister and I are. She is 42 years of age, and I am 44. She has had cerebral palsy since birth, but she is a Motown buff, particularly a Stevie Wonder fan. I used to sit around my older cousins in the mid '60's and we would compete to see who could sound like Tammi the best... as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. We know ain't nothing like the real thing, but we sound just as good if not better than Val.. Hey all, I thought I'd pass on another clarification: I thought until recently that L would be the primary author of the book, that the book would be told in her words. I thought so because: 1. as long ago as the summer of '98, Martha Reeves told me L was writing a book; & 2. L's friends Dan & Marie Leighton told me L was searching for a publisher for a book. But at this point, Vickie will be THE author, though L will be quoted often (thanks, Ritchie, for the tip).

Hi Lynn

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your memories.

You would enjoy the Northern Soul scene because it traces and continues to trace every quality Soul 45/acetate/master tape ever made in sixties, and early seventies America.

Just want to say can't wait to see this book on sale in the UK . There arn't many artist's that can actually move me to tears when I hear them sing. She is one of them , she showed such emotion in her voice you couldn't fail but to be moved. My favorite "What you gave me" pure perfection .

Hi All,
Just had to mention that I have a copy of the Complete Duets Marvin and Tammi, what a fabulous memorial to say the least, I was so pleased to hear Tammi's original versions of Ain't no Mountain, Livin till your Lovin, Memory Chest, More More More, That's how it is, I had a feeling that Tammi had recorded these solo and it was great to find out that my hunch was right..To hear Tammi laugh, and some of the raw sound come through really brought her spirit back again... May that Spirit last for decades more..

I think there is a link to the release of Complete Duets on this forum from when we were talking about it before.

Also check out the bonus track at the begining on the CD (when it plays, push the reverse button to reveal an earlier take of the song and also hear Benny Benjamin's rasping voice) plus there is the wonderful bit on the end of side 2 where Tammi and Marvin do a song and Tammi says (I can't do accents but here is my best shot)..... do we have to do it a-g-a-i-n!!!!!!!!

Every person shoul dhave that album in their collection, it's a must...

Just thought I'd mention, I have had more email enquiries about Tammi than anyone else I've ever profiled on my website. Only today a guy in the US was asking if Irresistible was out on CD. I naturally replied - with a strong recommendation for the Duets too.

(I wonder what the sales figures are like...? Pretty good, I should think - she lives on in the hearts of so many.)

I have been trying for a long time to find Video recordings of Marvin and Tammi in the UK, I did manage to find one The story of Marvin Gaye which has a clip of Marvin and Tammi singing Ain't No Mountain High Enough( Tammi's false eyelashes are amazing!!!) but the sound is now poor quality. I remember Marvin and Tammi shots being used in the background of the Video for I knew You Were Waiting, George Michael and Aretha Franklin. Can anyone tell me if there are some around ?

Hello Tammi fans, friends and most of all; Hello Ludie. I just wanted to say my name is Andre, I'm 19 and this beautiful swan is my favorite all time female singers. Most of todays singers dont too much for me because they dont take their music too seriously(meaning they are not soulful enough). I've got to tell you Ludie, I really wish I was around when your sister was here; she was so lovely its sad to see her gone. I hate to see a beautiful woman die; it tears me apart. I want to become a big soulful singer in about a year or two. The album will be called WELCOME TO BELLVILLE. Ludie, I love your sister so much that I wrote a self titled song for her called "TAMMI"; that will be my first release single in her and your dedication. Here is the song
TAMMI: by Andre Bell

On three-sixteen, Tammi said goobye; you'll no longer see her face

On three-sixteen, Tammi didn't die; she's in a better place

Even though in her life she did depart
Just remember the simple fact shes in our hearts

T is for temptation
A is for ambitious
M is for merciless and magical
I is for irresistable

Talented,Electrifying,Relentess and Remarkable
Eager,Loving and Legendary
All spells Tammi Terrell!!

There is more but its a little too long. I'll e-mail more of this song another time; I just wanted to send you a sample of it. Could you respond back to me; I've spoken to a famous singers relative before.

Thank you very much
See you soon

Andre R. Bell

How nice of you, Andre, to write a song for T. I am an amateur singer/guitarist & have done the same thing; my song is "Liberty Belle." Here's an excerpt from it:

Liberty Belle, to the world you did sing
Summer & autumn & winter & spring
Though you may be gone
Your mem'ry lives on
Tammi Terrell, Liberty Belle

For the complete lyrics & the RealAudio file of me singing it, go to http://www.tammiterrell.com

Thank you for giving us a taste of your song, & best of luck with your singing career.

Precious Love,

Vickie,

I have a few questions:

1.Did Marvin Gaye attend the services or visited
Tammie's grave site?

2. If Tammie was beening abuse by David Ruffin and
James Brown, did her family know anything about it, or did other singers knew what was happending to her.

3. Was Tammie receiving royalitie check during
her illness.

Thanks

Sorry, no IN & OUT Burgers here - just the ubiquitous Macdonalds.

Hey, remember the joke that was going round when Reagan was president...?

Q: What do Macdonalds and the White House have in common?

A: They both have a clown called Ronald.

I can only echo the sentiments of all those that have gone beforeme ... i wish you all the best with the book, i know it will be nothing short of inspirational. Tammi deservedly has a huge fan base here in the UK and many of her songs are played regularly in the soul clubs over here. I personally championed 'I gotta find a way to get you back' for a number of years wherever I DJ'd and it became one of my most requested tunes. To me the song epitomised all that was good about the magic of Motown and the gift that Tammi had to create perfection. There are few days that go by when i don't listen to her sing. Thanks to Harry W we have so much more of that magic to listen to

Can anyone tell me at what point They started using Val simpson on her Records with Marvin??
I find it quite hard to tell the difference between the two singers. No discredit intended Val simpson was a great singer also. I'd just like to say (with the benefit of hindsight)i think if Tammi had lived, she would have probably gone on to be a major Solo act. Certainly everyone at motown seemed to hold her in quite high regard.

I guess this is a question Harry could answer the most accurately, if it's not classified information ;o)

I've often wondered how the tracking sheets were filled in for the "Marvin and Val" multi-tracks... were Valerie's vocal tracks logged as "Valerie" or "Tammi"... or something less helpful? Just a thought....

I can tell the 2 voices apart. T had a natural purr, while V had a pinched-nose sound. Of the 12 songs from the album Easy (1969), 10 have V subbing; the other 2 were T solos with M's voice overdubbed. On the album, You're All I Need (1968), 6 of the 12 songs are overdubs, & 5 I am sure are real duets. As for the title song, I think I hear V doing the female lead; I hear that pinched-voice sound on lines like "Darlin', in you I find strength where I was torn down; Don't know what's in store but together we can open any door." Apparently those in charge decided that T's voice was so weak as to ruin the song's hit potential, so they arranged, behind M & T's backs, for V to replace T's lead vocals with her own. I doubt that any record label could get away with such false advertising nowadays; today's press & fans would get wise right away.

Collins

According to both of the Marvin Gaye biographies, he was fully aware of the deception from the start. Initially, he refused to co-operate, but was persuaded that it was in Tammi's interest that the flow of releases should continue, even if she was not in reality on the records. Finally, he agreed to overdub the Tammi solos, and "duet" with Val, but he is reported to have been very unhappy with the situation. He believed that Val's subbing was dishonest, and cheating their fans.

Sadly, I think this kind of deception would be even easier to achieve today, with the capabilities of digital technology, and I won't even broach the subject of vocal synthesis.

Top of pageBottom of page   By TammisGuy (198.60.101.223 - 198.60.101.223) on Saturday, June 01, 2002 - 06:33 pm:

As far as M knowing about the deception but grudgingly going along with it, I knew from reading Divided Soul that such was the case with the Easy sessions. But the book did not specifically say that V had subbed on YAINTGB, nor did it mention overdubs of T solos. Had I been in M's shoes, I would've stuck to my guns in refusing to participate in such false advertising, even if it meant the demise of my own career.

Had the foot been in the other shoe (M collapsing in T's arms), I think T would have achieved solo stardom, like Emmylou Harris did after Gram Parsons died. Though some fans had hoped in '69 for T to replace Diana in the Supes, I feel that she belonged solo.
Regards,
CC

Hello Ludie! I never would have dreamed that I would have the opportunity to communicate with Tammi Terrell's sister. I have written many times on Collin's beautiful website and he and I have had several conversations in regard to Tammi. I've been a fan of hers from about age 10 (I will be 36 in October)and have read many different accounts surrounding her demise and subsequent death. Of the several books i've read on Marvin Gaye,so far the one that really gave insight on Tammi as a person was "Marvin Gaye:What's Goin'On" by Ben Edmunds. I love Tammi and listen to her everyday. Not only was she a beautiful girl, but seemed to have a beautiful spirit as well. I await your book and understand it is being written in collaboration with Vickie. God bless you, your family and thank you again for honoring your sister's memory.
