Time after time La Wilson shows that she is not afraid to be involved with and embrace the musical heritage of the past. This sounds like a gas everyone:

Icons of 1960s and 70s soul music rendezvoused in Pittsburgh just days before Thanksgiving and gave a sold-out crowd at the Benedum Center plenty to be thankful for--a live concert with Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Jerry Butler and MARY WILSON. Also on the bill, Gloria Gaynor, Edwin Starr, The Originals, Barbara Mason, Carl Carlton, Dennis Edwards' Temptations Revue, Peaches & Herb, Freda Payne, Blue Magic, The Three Degrees, Billy Paul, The Hues Corporation, Thelma Houston, and The Manhattans. From "Respect" to "Band of Gold;" from "25 Miles" to "I Will Survive," these legends of soul are reunited (and it feels so good.) MARY WILSON closes the show with an all-star performance of "Someday We'll Be Together," featuring Johnny Bristol and Louvaine Demps, who sang on the original recording of the song in 1969. Check your local PBS listings for air dates in your area.

Hey, Dennis....looking forward to the show tonight on Channel 56 here in Detroit. Susan Whitall had a nice article about Mary Wilson in the Detroit News this morning with a sidebar on the Rhythm, Love and Soul show.

Question for Sue: great photo of Mary Wilson. How recent?

Once again, Dennis. Congrats on the show.

The Originals "Baby I'm For Real." Woooooo. I used to play that song and just sing my heart out.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Vandelron (205.188.209.38) on Saturday, March 01, 2003 - 11:21 pm:

Just watched the show--Denis Coffey ruled with Band of Gold. I was shocked--the revelation for me was Barbara Mason--what a voice!Mary and the finale had life but I felt overall it was a curiously low-key event--some spirit seemed to be missing.(Aretha was way off) My hunch--the pledge pitches just were the worst Ive ever encountered--I cant sit through it again. They should do more of atrists like Gloria making a pitch at end of her song and cut down on Cousin Brucie who is too much. Also Valerie of "3 Degrees" was sensational. Im curious why were the Supremes not mentioned--Mary wanting to be on her own or legal stuff(I hope not the latter)? Also it bothered me that on a show celebrating these performers PBS has a picute of Flo Ballard on video box identified as Mary Wilson(as well as TJ referring to the Supremes as Diana and the girls!). And the show is supposed to celebrate the identity of these artists-inexcusable.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Heikki (62.71.79.239) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 01:22 am:

Hi Sis!
The Originals line-up since 2001 should be Freddie Gorman, Walter Gaines, Hank Dixon and Hank's daughter, Terrie Dixon. Terrie replaced C.P.Spencer, who, of course, has his own Originals these days.
Freddie: "We were going to look for someone to play C.P.'s part, but when we realised that Terri knew all of our songs. She was raised with them. We called a rehearsal together and she was perfect. The audience just loves her." (Soul Express, # 1/2002).
Best regards
Heikki

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 02:24 am:

Thank you Heikki - that young lady is going to be great. Remember "Terrie Dixon."

Was Johnny Bristol on the Supremes "Someday We'll Be Together" release? It was great to see him performing with Mary Wilson.

I guess I'll turn in now. I've watched the show twice. Good night to some and good morning to others.

Top of pageBottom of page   By RD (63.188.32.67) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 08:20 am:

There's pictures of the Originals w/Terrie on a northern soul website that were taken when they performed in England last year but I can't remember which one.

PBS should have aired that program everywhere, not just certain areas.

Johnny Bristol is on the Supremes recording and recorded the original version of "Someday We'll Be Together" with Jacky Beavers as well.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Dennis Coffey (205.188.209.38) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 10:11 am:

Hi, The Count, Sis Detroit, Sue, Gary, Kevgo, 65 Memories, Vandelron and everyone else. I watched the show twice last night with Millie. Unbelievable! The funk was in the house! I felt honored just to be there and play with so many legendary artists. One of the most interesting experiences for me was when Dennis Edwards introduced me to the new Temptations and their guitar player. He said, "This is Dennis Coffey, the guy who played that guitar stuff on our records. Cloud Nine, I can't Get Next to You, Psychedelic Shack, Ball of Confusion." Another thing that stood out for me was when TJ called me himself and invited me on the show. He really appreciates and respects the music. Edwin said it for us all when he said you can't get this music with just synthesizers. Edwin, the Tempts and Aretha's performances were fine examples of that. I would sure like to see more funk come back into main stream music again. Maybe the Funks winning those Grammys this year will start the ball rolling in that direction.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Sue (205.188.209.38) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 10:30 am:

That was a great line of Edwin Starr's, about the difference between real and synthesized music.

Funk Bros. conga player Treaty Womack was saying the other day that synthesizers have never been able to duplicate a guitar sound -- never. I'd add that most of the other effects are deeply cheesy. Fool you for a minute at most.

Was that Ali Woodson singing with Aretha, Sis, on that later tune? Wow ...

Top of pageBottom of page   By SisDetroit (68.42.209.170) on Sunday, March 02, 2003 - 01:15 pm:

Yes, that was the one and only Ali-Ollie Woodson. He is just fantastic. His cd is "Right Here All Along."

Dennis - Dennis Edwards group is called "The Temptation Review." I was happy to see each of the "Review" being introduced on the tape. I just had myself a ball just like you and Millie I watched it twice. Even when they were asking for call-in, and begging for you to donate, I watched every second of it because during those times, it was still groovy, and soulful. They were playing such great tunes from the CD's being offered, and showing such great video clips, I just couldn't stop my recording. I got everything. That was my night out, sitting at home in front of the TV and the computer. :o)

I'm glad, Dennis, that you are on that PBS special because it is really a "special treat."

Seeing Aretha and Lou Rawls singing together was magic!! I would love to see them tour together.

Dennis you were"cookin",although they missed the boat by not letting you do a nice long solo on camera. They know not what they missed!!

The singing!! MAN,was everyone in top form! What a bunch of class acts!! THIS is why we bemoan the current state of music. After you hear these acts how can you not agree that live people doing harmony that can REALLY sing put everything else to shame.

Now,about Freda Payne. That dress! That voice! That body! That face!! And did I mention that dress she wore last night.LORD HAVE MERCY,it like,d to make a dead man rise up out of a coffin. She sure looked good.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW-weeeeeeee.
The best spokin words of the night was EDWIN STARR,it's the real thing man.I always felt that way,and still do,what you see is what you hear.
The line-up was terrific, and they all were in the groove, but what impressed me the most was "BLUE MAGIC",it was just how it used to be,which you dont see very often today,Two Mic'S,one lead mic and one harmony mic.Thats it man,the harmonies all hudled around one mic,bad as hell man.
DENNIS,I'am going to do a special FLAMED guitar for you, that axe is always on fire when it's just in your hands, and to think JIMI H.had to light his with fuel and a match.I must of dreamed of FREEDA last nite, when I woke-up this morning I could of knocked over 1958 BUICKS.

Hey Jim. Thanks. Good hearing from you. It's been a long time. Hey Lynn. I had a blast doing the show. The CDs have additional cuts. We cut another version of I Can't Get Next to you with the Temptations Review. I did a solo on the fade and another solo on the fade to a song by the Hughs Corporation. I think it was Rock your Boat.

I'm glad to hear you guys liked Freda in that dress, she's gorgeous but I thought she might'a needed a little support. But I will bow to your expertise as connoisseurs of the female form!

Philly/Bobby -- the PBS show aired in Detroit last night but not all markets. You have to check your local listings. I'm wondering if anyone else other than Pittsburgh & Detroit have seen it ...

Blue Magic singing "Sideshow" was gorgeous!!! Kudos to Bobby and cha-ching ...

I saw bits & pieces of the American Soundtrack special (I tune it off during the "beg-a-thon" sessions because I feel PBS could've gotten someone other than Cousin Brucie to speak about oldies). At the risk of ditto-ing what has been said, my impressions:

DENNIS COFFEY - Absolutely marvelous to see you on camera, my friend! To see you groove like there was no tomorrow was priceless. Now how about a Dennis Coffey tour.... :)

FREDA PAYNE - Let me get this out of the way by saying Freda is FINE AS HELL! She sounded great and looked great. I would marry her in a heartbeat if she was available....let me calm down..*AHEM!* Her performance was wonderful and looked beautiful in that dress....(PAUSE FOR COLD SHOWER).

ARETHA & ALI - Kicked a---! Aretha ruled, Ali sounded so good it made me wonder whether Otis Williams is kicking himself right now...

DENNIS EDWARDS & THE TEMPTS REVIEW - Is it me or do these guys sound as good as the current Tempts, if not better. I enjoyed their performance of I Can't Get Next To You and Cloud Nine. Maybe I should've caught them at BB King's here in NYC two weeks ago...

BARBARA MASON - Man! What a voice! Nish was right - Barbara was a winner that night.

"BROTHER" LOU RAWLS - Love his voice every time.

EDWIN STARR W/THE ORIGINALS & THE ANDANTES' LOUVAINE DEMPS - Great on "25 Miles" but PBS showed a piece of them performing "SOS" during the "beg-a-thon" segment and it was killer. Joanne Bratton & Ed Wingate would've been proud.

BILLY PAUL - OOOOOOOWWWWEEEEE! Smoooooooth! So jazzy, classy & sharp!

I couldn't watch the rest of it because I had an inventory session at my old record store on Sunday morning (at four in the morning!). I'm sure to catch it again soon.

WOW!!
Good to see Dennis Coffey again I hadnt seen him on TV since Soul Train when he did Scorpio!!!
Freda Payne Im jealous I hope I look that good when Im 60...
NOW Mary Wilson put her smokey alto on Someday Well Be Together and just the history of seeing Johnny Bristol!!!!!
Edwin Starr was the best act on the bill in my opinion and he has not lost it one bit..I think the audience went WOW to hear Billy P do Me and Mrs Jones.
Aretha I feel sorry for she was OK but she needs to lose some weight but she still reigns as the Queen of Soul!!!
Lou Rawls MAN he can still sing like he did 30 years ago.
Carl Carlton it was nice to see Mr Bad Mama Jama come out of hiding..
Blue Magic and the Manhattans added some class to male groups and DENNIS can still saaaaang..I like Otis's and Dennis's groups cause I love the Temps
The young PEACHES was a dead ringer on her voice for Linda Greene..(I wonder where Linda is?) Herb sounded just like he did before too. Im amazed at
how well these people still look and sing.
What kind of youth pills are Mary Wilson and Gloria Gaynor taking tell me!!!

Barbara Mason I heard had not sung in a while she looked a little nervous at first but then picked it up and looked happy to be there....

Dennis Coffey and Everyone:

I loved this special so much, I watched it twice. Once on PBS Channel 13 and then WLIW Long Island Channel 21. It was incredible. I agree with all the comments that have already been made on this forum but my observations.

Mary Wilson and Freda Payne: Did God make two more beautiful women!!! When you realize that Mary is 59 this month and that Freda is actually older, you understand what true lasting beauty is. Freda was dynamite in that dress and sang fabulously. And what a treat to hear and see our own Dennis Coffey (and he got to sit behind Freda!!!!!) Mary in her braids looked as though time had stopped, and she still has the same bubbly "happy to be here" attitude that she has always exuded. A great moment was when Mary Wilson actually hugged one of the Andantes who replaced her and Cindy on a lot of late Diana Ross and the Supremes records. It shows what a class lady this diva is and why she has the largesse of fans and industry insiders.

Aretha: I don't care how big she gets or what she wears, she is the embodiment of music. Her duet with Lou Rawls was sublime and when she launched into that rousing version of Freeway of Love with Ollie Woodson along for the ride, I was dancing around my apartment. Queen Ree knows how to get an audience going and she always has the most incredible rhythm section. Aretha's performances on this PBS show Illustrated what was missing from the Grammy's this year, absolute talent. No, she does not sing like 20 years ago but the doll can still squall and send a quiver up my spine.

Barbara Mason: Wow, she sounds better than she did when she made the record. A lot of the so-called female stars of today could take a lesson by watching her perform Yes I'm Ready. I had not heard her in years and truly was surprised by her interpretive skills and vocal abilities. As she was singing I heard Nancy Wilson in her voice.

Dennis Edwards and Temptations Review: Smokin' and he has put together a class act. The guys looked great and did not denigrate the Temptations memory. To pull off Papa Was A Rolling Stone is not mean feat. I can see why there have been lawsuits because what he has put together rivals The Temptations own show.

Blue Magic and the Manhattans: What can we say? Both groups sounded great and looked wonderful. Again, class, talent, sound and commitment made them rise way over the so-called singing groups of today.

Edwin Starr: Isn't it great to see and hear him on these shores again. He truly seemed to be enjoying himself and to being backed by the Originals, who were also wonderful in what we saw of Baby I'm For Real, was a gas.

Gloria Gaynor: I am not sure why so much time was spent on her as opposed to others but it was great to see her.

Thelma Houston: THIS DOLL CAN SING THE WALLS DOWN. Why someone does not take her back into the studio is beyond me, what a voice and stage presence!!!!! Everytime I see her on TV she brings down the house.

Peaches & Herb: What is this now the 23rd Peaches? LOL!!! No matter, they sounded great on Reunited and looked even better.

This is the best show that PBS has put on and shows that there is an audience for this "retro" music. Everyone was great, not a bad egg in the bunch. I loved the shots of the audience dancing, singing, and falling in love all over again. I did something I have never done, I actually pleged money because I was so excited by this show. Congratulations PBS, you did something that no advertising sponsored show has done until this point. I was in heaven.
Michael

This is about the 3rd. oldies soul shown that P.B.S. has aired. I found that his was no better than the other shows. Old name groups with one or two orginal menbers. Then as the fund raiser they will sell you a tape or DVD. Before this show was aired the was lawerence welk show ,and tape for sale The band was ok but nothing outstanding, and to pick out one player was very hard to do.Ms. Franklin was in good voice but her choice of clothing was ?

I truly concur with everybodys assessment of the PBS show.
Every one did a splendid job on their respective
songs. I am especially proud of my homies Blue Magic and Barbara Mason as they really shone and represented Philly in the highest order.
I would love to see and hear "our music" resurface once again and be revitalized to be enjoyed by todays young consumers and have them see what real talent is all about.

So glad you got props on the PBS Special. I'm also glad to know you were there for the whole performance. TJ's blurb made it seem like you were only there for Freda's performance. Looks like you had front row seats on stage with the singers. I know you had a great time.

You are truly a National treasure!

Hi Sue. I played the rhythm part on Band of Gold even though I played my electric sitar on the record. The part was written out on the session. At the time, I felt it would be better for the gig for me to punch out the rhythm part because the guitar player, Don, had already memorized the sitar part and I wanted to make sure the song had the right feel. When I got to Pittsburgh to rehearse at the recording studio, I found out there were no rhythm charts. The guys in the rhythm section wrote their own charts using the Nashville Numbering system. I was the only guy at the rehearsal with no charts. The arranger wrote out parts for the horns and strings for the show. After the first rehearsal, I sat down with the guitar player and wrote some quick charts for myself. In fact the next day, they forgot to give me directions to the theatre so I arrived about 15 minutes late. I saw the Andantes jump in a limo so I jumped in with them. The guys in the band laughed when I got there. They thought I was mad because there were no charts and went home. I told them I accepted the gig and came to play. They rehearsed and taped 55 songs in the show that day. I played on a lot of them. The band was great and I had a good time. We worked from 11:00am until after well after 1:00am in the morning. I got back to the hotel at 3:00am and got up at 5:00am to come back home. Just like old times. It was a long day but a lot of fun. I have a lot of respect for everyone in Pittsburgh who put on the show including the arranger, the house band and the orchestra.

Cleoharvey--I always tend to greatly agree with your posts. I thought Barbara Mason stole the show, with Valerie of 3 Degress and Thelma close. And Mary giving it the energy and charisma it needed. However Miss Aretha seemed off to me--Ive read she sometimes sleepwalks thru and I felt that. She sould wear a sheet for all I care but she needs to get her soul in it-what a gift she has!!I second Ms Thelma MUST b recorded--she is close to the top of the best singers on the planet. And someone sign Barbara Mason too(and she writes her songs!I read not too long ago she was close to signing with Gamble Huff publishing)!!!!Stop the ageism!!!

Hi Everyone!
I thought the show was absolutely fantastic...those songs brought back a lot of memories for me. However, the best part of the evening was sitting next to that guitar player...I think his name is Dennis Coffey! He was so much fun to watch...he kept saying (actually he was shouting) "...feel the funk"..."there's a lot of funk in the room" and so on! He probably had more fun Saturday night watching the show then he had actually being there (except for watching Freda Payne)! I agree with the others...this show was THE best one so far. T.J. Lubinsky has a great future ahead of him! It's too bad all that Detroit talent had to be in Pittsburgh, and not at the Fox Theatre or somewhere in Detroit. Maybe next time!

DENNIS COFFEY -

The Channels worked with the house band and we enjoyed working them. They are really good. I know they had the charts about week before we flew into Pittsburgh but after two two "takes" of rehearsing our 3 song set, we felt comfortable and had no worries. We wanted to fly them back to New York with us.

I got a chance to speak with the drummer (forgot his name) and the way he carried himself made me think he was the musical director but he told me he was not. What I mean is that he was directing the band, during rehearsals, regarding the tempo and breaks and that gave me the impression he was the MD. I was impressed that even he had his own charts.

Young Fan,

Proper eticate and manners would be something you might want explore and exercise regarding your age remark. Your inmaturity is very evident in your remark. With age comes wisdom and also the ability to achieve a level of playing that can only come from digging into ones' self. This is a classic example of the weak root system I have talked about in previous threads. Mr. Coffey set the bar for many a guitar player and has himself risen above that bar, through experience and the love for his music. I could go on and on educating you, but I'm not going to clean up what your parent did not address. Get your shit together..!

Rather than getting into the singers physical attributes, let's be thankful that they are well and alive!!! So many of the people from the day have become victim to drugs and whatever and are not with us any longer. These people have made it through a great deal. So what if they have put on a few pounds, so have I.

I agree that Aretha CAN'T get any bigger but just to see her is always a treat for me. And let's face it, her costumes have always been fodder for comment (I once saw her dressed in a geisha outfit!). I think it is intentional. I have seen her on several occasions at private parties and she is dressed tastefully and wonderfully.

As far as Freda, I still say WOW!! And I am not a fat chaser. LOL!!!

The comment that I made about the apearence of Ms. Payne as compared to Mr. Coffey I feel was very honest. If mr.coffey was the orginal player on Ms. Payne recoarding Ms.Payne must have been a very young girl at that time The comparison was striking, It is not what I consider old but the apearence between the two was of a grandfather and grandaughter:Look at the show again and you decide

There is a simple answer to the way Miss Payne looked. BLACK DON'T CRACK!!! LOL!!! Freda is actually older than Mary Wilson and Mary turns 59 on March 7th. Dennis Coffey, who is a genius, has aged wonderfully and looks as he should. I have a notion that Leslie Uggams, Lena Horne, Diahnn Carroll, Freda Payne, Scherrie Payne, Mary Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Barbara Mason et al, have found a fountain that they go to where they drink and maintain their beauty. They are in a coven and have a pact where they swear to tell no one where it is. I am just angry that I can't find it. LOL!@!!@!

Hi everyone,
Here is a little story you might enjoy.
I was in the studio one day, recording Ruby Andrews with Ron Dunbar producing. We somehow got on the subject of his writing "Band Of Gold". I asked him how it came about, that Freda Payne was choosen to record that song, and where he found her. He started laughing and said, she used to walk by his house every day on her way to catch the bus on the corner. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen!! One day, he said, he couldn't take it any longer, so he went out and stopped her. After a little conversation, he asked her if she could sing and would she mind auditioning for him at HDH studios. Anyway - according to Ron, that's how it started. I told him if it was me, I would have ran out and tackled her too!!!

Hang in there. Sometimes it goes through changes like with a full moon. Things get tense and things get crazy, but eventually it gets in a groove. During those periods, people share some of their greatest wisdom, laughs, memories and heartaches. It seems like we're in a strange phase right now but it will get back in the groove.

OK young fan,

Although I'm perpetuating the non-music content I so deplore, I have to point something out to you. Looking good and looking young aren't necessarily the same thing. You can be 20 but not look as good as Freda Payne does at 60.

Freda is a 60-year-old babe, but she does not look 30. No. Mary Wilson is a 60-year-old babe, totally gorgeous. She doesn't look 25 or 30, but that takes nothing away from her beauty.

If I was to say Paul Newman is handsome -- and I would -- that doesn't mean I think he looks young. No way -- he looks 70.

Get my drift? I've seen Ms. Payne up close and she is everything you see on TV and more, but she does not look 30 years old.

Another thing -- men don't have the makeup and hair styling options that women do. If you look at a picture of a 30-year-reunion some day, and I hope you live long enough to do so, you'll notice all the women look younger. Hair coloring products, makeup -- they're much more acceptable on women, and they do help.

I love your story about Freda Payne!!! I would have tackled her too. About 8 years ago I was at a party on the Upper West Side. It was a "black show business" star affair. It included recording artists, Broadway people, and actors/actreses. At about 1:00 am the door bell rang and in walked Freda Payne and Mary Wilson together. They were dressed and beat into the next life and absolutely stopped the party cold. Even people there who are considered more "famous" were slack jawed. I have never forgotten that moment as illustrating what is true beauty and glamour.

HEY GUYS:

I dearly love this forum because of the people that I have been able to converse with and the fount of wonderful information from the greats of music/industry. Please don't let it become another forum of ugliness. For the most part the posts on these forum are superb and of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. This is a free country no matter what the Executive Shrub and his war cohorts are trying to ram down our throats. But we should make a concerted effort to stay away from any ugliness to keep the incredible flow of information going. I have left several forums in the past because of one or two people ruining them with snidness or personal attacks.

I finally got to see part of the show on KQED here in Monterey. What I saw looked great. I got to see my man Dennis Coffey along with Freda Payne who really is still a knock-out. I saw Blue Magic doing Bobby Eli's Sideshow. Everybody I did see looked and sounded great.

NOW......I thought the over-all sound sucked. All the vocals had the same overly echoed, compressed quality and were buried way too far into the track What should have been " In Your Face " wasn't. Am I the only one who thinks this? Also, I got real tired of KQED putting out the tin cup every 15 minutes or so. I finally gave up and went to bed.

There's a term I've heard among friends in public radio that is used whenever fundraising is involved: beg-a-thon.

Ralph - not that I am an expert with television sound, but it has been said in the past that sound is the poor relation to the pictures. I also believe that as an added bonus, TV stations tend to put things called Optimods on the station's sound output, which compresses things a little. Again, I know little about this, but have seen the equipment in place in the past. Maybe that contributed to some of the sound problems you heard?

Top of pageBottom of page   By Reese (204.152.12.159) on Friday, March 07, 2003 - 03:19 pm:

This has to be my favorite among the TJ Lubinsky (sp?) specials. To see all of these legends sounding just as good if not better than they did back in the day was heartwarming. Of course, I'm partial to any special that gives Aretha the chance to sing live. Say what you want to about her fashion sense or her weight: the woman can still blow. Other faves of mine were Barbara Mason, Lou Rawls, Peaches and Herb, and Freda Payne.

The only problem I had with the show was the audio mix. Quite often, the applause sometimes drowned out the vocals. I'm sure the audience was very enthusiastic, but some of the applause was canned, and it took away from some great performances.

Top of pageBottom of page   By Livonia Ken (136.2.1.101) on Friday, March 07, 2003 - 04:21 pm:

Hopefully a good chunk of what sounded odd about the broadcast was just good old-fashioned broadcaster added compression. Maybe the video will sound better?

I will finally see the whole thing this evening, but unless something went horribly awry in the second half, I can't complain about the music and performances, regardless of the technical presentation.

Regards,
Ken

Watched a bit last night, then the tape this morning and again this afternoon. A great show, matching the quality of the other Pittsburgh productions--the folk music show excepted.
A bit dissapointed in Aretha. Can't tell you exactly why, but the sleepwalking comment seemed apripoe. My wife, last of the great skeptics, LOVED the Temptations Review, as did I, although I was not impressed with the musical arrangement on "Rolling Stone". As to the sound, I'm not at all technical, but it the acts sounded washed out at the open, but got better as the show progressed.
Feel the need to by the tape to see what I missed (Hues Corp., Spinners, and etc.), and probably will once it shows up at the KCTS store.
Impressed by Gloria Gaynor, The Originals, Blue Magic and VERY IMPRESSED by Edwin Starr, and the use of "25 Miles" in the show, and "S.O.S" in a tease.
Which brings up the question.....how many of these acts are still actively touring? I know of the Tempts Review, but the others sounded too good to have been just sitting on their hands the past 30 years.

It finally aired in Chicago this past weekend and a couple of friends of mine, Diane Madison and Theresa Davis were background singers along with Louvain Demps of the Andantes. They were the ones dressed in black on the platform above the stage. Man, did Dennis Edwards pick up some pounds? He's still a bad cat, though. ALL OF US HERE ARE OLDER AND WISER THAN YOU,BUT WE ARE NOT DEAD.I DON'T KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE(DOESN'T MATTER)BUT IF YOU PUT US IN A ROOM TOGETHER,WITH THE PERFORMERS FROM THE MOTOWN YEARS,WE WILL ROCK WITH THE BEST OF THEM.
I KNOW THIS FOR A FACT CAUSE I'VE SEEN IT MANY,MANY TIMES.
I HAVE SEEN THE TOPS IN CONCERT 7 TIMES,AND SAW THE TEMPS ON DEC.19TH.
BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY EVERY TIME THE AUDIENCE WAS ON THEIR FEET.
I BELIEVE THIS FORUM IS NOT FOR YOU.

LOL - "We are not dead." LOL

Reading and posting on Soulful Detroit, woke up lots of dead brain cells. LOL
Bringing up those memories which had been dormant for 30-40 years.

Some of us are still alive and kicking. They sure were kicking on that PBS special. Best ever.

Rhythm Love & Soul will be shown on Channel 12 WHYY 8pm on Tuesday March 11,2003 in the Philadelphia area.
I was fortunate, honored and blessed to be in the company of all of these great legends for the TV taping a few months back. The show is a documented phenominal and historic event. I too have my favorites, but all of the acts were excellent. They all look and sound great. These are RnB icons. I enjoy todays talented artist as well (Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake)they carry their own weight as artists and vocalists, and they too are great entertainers. Timberlake even credits (Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye as his greatest influences). Even these MTV generation superstars agree that there will never ever be an era like Motown 60's & 70's soul. The greatest decades in the history of American popular music.

Nish, the tall, light complected lady you mentioned is my ex-neighbor Theresa Davis. Theresa (or T as we call her) was a member of The Emotions from 1970 to 1974, temporarily replacing Jeanette Hutchinson. When the group left Stax and signed with Columbia in 1976, Jeanette returned. Sheila once said that before they signed with CBS, they were courted by Warner Bros. and Philadelphia International, but because they knew Maurice White from way back, they decided to go with him. That probably worked out for the better. As much as I love Gamble & Huff, I'm not sure I believe they could have gotten out of The Emotions what Maurice did. But jumping back to what you said about T, Theresa is a genuine sweetheart, one of the nicest people you will ever meet. And the lady to her right, Diane Madison is a friend of mine, as well. She sings with a local group called Vocalpoynt, featuring my bestest buddy, Byron Woods. They are produced by keyboard man Mike Logan.

something that we say everyday(SOMEBODY'S KNOCKING
AT THE DOOR SOMEBODY RINGING THE BELL,DO ME A
FAVOR OPEN THE DOOR AND LET EM IN)and make it
into something absolutely devine.then we all
know what a fine singer and musical genius he is.

On Rhythm Love & Soul I thaught the Temptations Revue featuring Dennis Edwards was awesome. They stick closer to the legend of the original Temptations, more so than the group led by Otis Williams.(although they are very good too.)
