Stu,
It's after midnight. I couldn't sleep so I got up to check out the forum. You're right. This is one mild January in California. Hell Stu, I just got dumped by some girl who claimed money wasn't important. Big deal, I still got dumped. Tell you what pal. I'll race you to the Onassis heir. At least if she dumps us maybe she'll pin a Mil to our lapels before she shoves us out the door.
Well, I guess I'm going back to bed now. I'll attach L.A 1 to this tomorrow for you.
Goodnight....

One thing I laugh at is how apparently in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, they don't know anything about rock salt. One day of snowfall, amounting in six inches total and the whole Hampton Roads region closes. As a Pittsburgher who has had to go to school in conditions worse than the six inches of soft, ice-free snow we experienced in VA a few weeks ago, I find this extremely laughable. See, that's what happens to warm region dwellers! I'll bet you LA folks wouldn't last a day over here in the Northeast or Midwest! The occasional Arctic blast every now and again builds character! :-)

The farther north you go, the more efficient the road crews are. 1: because of more practice 2: because of better equipment.

One nasty blizzard I was in last year in the upper penninsula of Michigan was particularly memorial. The local government sent the road crews home and told them to stay off the roads as the blizzard was to bad due to white-out conditions.t When they send the road crews home, you know there's some dangerous weather. They told us by radio to travel at your own peril. Since I had good books a well stocked supply of alcohol plus food I thought it was beautiful outside.

When I was moving to Califronia From Michigan, I spent a night in Texarcana. That morning while heading to Dallas I heard on the radio that the Dallas school system had closed because of ONE inch of snow. How I laughed. What a buch of wooses ! ONE INCH?? Gimme a break. Imagine my surprise as the closer I got to Dallas the worse the roads got until it was just impossible to drive because that scrawny little one inch of snow stopped everything.

YEAH RALPH: ABOUT ONCE A YEAR, THEY GET A LITTLE DUSTING OUT IN THE HIGH DESERT (LANCASTER-PALMDALE), AND I'VE BEEN OUT THERE WHERE EXACTLY THE SAME THING HAPPENS!!!...AS I'VE STATED BEFORE...PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN DRIVE BETTER IN A FOOT OF SNOW WITH ICY FREEWAY CONDITIONS, THAN DO CALIFORNIANS WHEN THE FIRST DROP OF RAIN HITS THE ROAD SURFACE!!!...NOW LYNN: IN THE TYPE OF CONDITIONS YOU DESCRIBE...YOU HAD BETTER HAVE A LITTLE ALCOHOL ON HAND!!!...THE ONLY FUN THING THAT I REMEMBER ABOUT THOSE CONDITIONS WERE THE MASSIVE SNOWBALL FIGHTS WE USED TO HAVE ON OUR WAY HOME FROM SCHOOL...A LITTLE MOISTURE....GREAT "PACKING"...EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE JERK IN THE CROWD THAT WOULD PUT A ROCK INSIDE OF HIS SNOWBALL!!!...STU

Top of pageBottom of page   By 1wicked (64.32.154.94) on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 04:05 pm:

Ralph....I'm from D/FW, so I know what you mean !! But the schools don't necessarily shut down because of (just) the snow....it's often at the request of the gas company because of the drain on resources when it gets that cold. (No biggie...it keeps buses off the roads and they just tack that day on to the end of the school year anyway !). They have even requested that major manufacturing firms shut down for a day for the same reason.
Stu...as an 18 year Californian, I'd hafta agree with you on the drivers here. I would add something else to that mix....but I'd be SOOOOOO politically incorrect !!

Ah, "Snow" isn't exactly the flavour of the month over here today... One snowfall last night and the whole country's thrown into chaos. Roads blocked, thousands without electricity, motorists trapped in their cars all night. The irony is, we get snow every year, and still we are never prepared. Yeah Stu Last nght was absolutely freezing in Monterey. I had to put my house heat on for a while. Brutal Winter weather returns. Probably a blusterey 60 degrees here also. But sunny. I just mowed my front AND back lawns. At least you East Coast types get a reprieve from that. Oh....forgot about snow shoveling though.

Monterey has to be the most serene, beautiful, crime-free, and clean (not even a cigarette butt on the beaches) place I've ever experienced. AND....you can even buy Coca Cola products that taste the way they used to....the Classic Formula with a "bite". If I won the lotto....I'd head there in a heartbeat with just the clothes on my back, my music collection, and my photo's. I really would like to open a restaurant there...'cause my grub is one helluva lot better than "Sly McFly's" !!

Is is beautiful here, but it is getting to be that you need to win the lotto just to survive here. Yeah, I'm not sure if I would eat anything at Sly's either. there are a lot of good restaurants here though and the competeion is pretty stiff between them. Maybe you could open up a genuine East Coast deli here.

Stu,
Old Red died years ago. There are two places. One in Seaside and one in Monterey. The Monterey place is run by Sophie and her husband Jim, along with Evie and Jose. I think Red's widow runs the Seaside outlet where the donuts are made. People talk about Krispy Kreme donuts. Drek compared to Reds.

Wicked: First Awakenings is very good but I'll put my money on Rosine's in downtown Monterey every time. just about the only place I eat these days. I suppose it helps that the owners, Rosine and Jim Culcassi are Sicilians and have kind of adopted me as one of their own.

Speaking of golf, this is the week of the AT&T at Pebble Beach up here. Normally the weather is somewhat iffy because of the time of year, but this year the only thing the golfers are getting soaked with is sunshine. Absolutely prime golfing weather.

The nice thing about our weather here in Central Washington (about 40, clear, no wind) is that a cup of coffee (which I'm drinking through a straw) tastes sooooo goooood after working out in the yard, or any outdoor activity. Doesn't work quite so well when it's 85 out.
By the way, if there isn't any snow on the ground, the die hards golf in this weather.

Actually, this nice weather is causing major problems for wheat farmers (no moisture or insulation if it gets cold), soft fruit (they're budding early), and power generation (we pay 3 cents a Kwh--no snow means no water for generation this summer). So as much as I may crow about our wonderful weather, if YOU want inexpensive power from OUR Columbia River Dams, pray for snow.

Just to scare you wimpy Californians even more, read this from the Associated Press ...

Snowballs are now forming themselves!

Some areas saw a rare weather phenomenon where snowballs form naturally and roll through fields like tumbleweeds. Meteorologists call them "rollers" and say they can range from the size of a golf ball to a 30-gallon drum.
"At first I thought they were just clumps of sod being turned over in the field," said Stacy Bowman, a Springfield, Ill., resident who stopped to watch the snow formations on her way home from work Tuesday night. "Then I thought maybe some kids were out there, but I didn't see any footprints around."

Ha! Top that ...

Thanks Ralph and Sis no I will still be in Toronto, but I am going to be doing private duty working with two families , so my plan is to finally go back to night school to get my special needs certification, so I can work with children with developmental problems. I am really looking forward to this I will miss the children I have now very much but I will not miss some of the adults I have to work with. I am hoping that after I get my certification I can finally make it down to the states to work.
Thanks again for all your good wishes it really means alot

My wife and I took a 300 mile trip (she does grocery store merchandising) today thru Central Washington. Sunny, mid 50's. Gorgeous weather.

Maybe early March.

...1) No. The Kingdome was imploded a couple of years ago, and replaced by the Seahawk stadium. The M's play at state of the art Safeco Field (outdoors).
2) No. We have a perfectly good shortstop in Carlos Guien. And besides, spending money on 1 good player and not a pitching staff was a big sucuess for the Rangers. That big contract of his makes him almost untradeable.
3) No. He was only here a couple of years, when he hit his 300th homer. Don't know where he is now.
