Never having been to the City of Angels I can't comment.... except that my heart bleeds for you all, having to put up with such temperatures. Here, the thermometer tells me it's freezing point, and the snow on the ground rather helps confirm this :o)

Well, Stubass, I would have been certainly cheesed off had you mentioned this last week of course, when there was 'nothing but grey Skies' and rain over London. However, we have a clear, fresh Sky today, which is a great start to the New Year. There have been terrific floods around the country, which many of us have escaped. As for falling snow, Vicki, I cannot believe that! When it snows in London I will stream a picture of it from our apartment window, on a secret personal url I use (that's if I can get the driver to work with it!!) Have you ever touched snow, or made a snowball?

HEy Carl,
I have seen snow on the ground..and have made a snowball ...I just have never seen it fall out of the sky or been around snow for more than a day, here in LA we drive to the snow then come back home...It snowed near my office on The Gilmore Girls outdoor set on the back lot all last month, that looked very real :)

Yesterday the temp in Monterey was in the low 70's. It felt like a very nice Spring day in Detroit. The truth of the matter is I wouldn't mind seeing snow once in a while. Especially during the past Holiday. Vickie, I'm sorry you have never experienced a quiet, nightime snowfall when the street lights make eveything sparkle and the world seems so very quiet. Thanks for the pic Ed. It brings back nice memories.

Yeah Stu...this is where my nostalgic fantasy falls apart. Remembering when you step down deep into a puddle of icy slush. Or looking at all the salt slime on your new car and knowing in the spring you will see the beginnings of deterioration. So our ground shakes a little once and a while. Big Deal.

Ralph,
Those snowy scenes are easier to enjoy when they clean the streets ... if I can drive through it, I don't mind if there's several inches on the lawns.

You're right, it's the quiet snowfall at night, with a fire going ...

Top of pageBottom of page   By Ralph (209.240.198.62) on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 11:11 am:

Sue,
Before I moved to Calfornia I was living in Walled Lake. I actually liked Winter out there. The snow stayed clean and it was like a picture looking at the lake fom my house. I did tend to get snowed in from time to time and had to wait for the snow plow to open the streets. I'd just throw a couple of more logs on the fire and enjoy the day.

Stu --
One word in defense of slush ...while walking across the street last winter I stepped into a big Detroit pothole and fell forward, right onto my face ...because of the bedrock of snow and then slush over it, I didn't feel a thing ...maybe it's the yoga too (laugh) ..

Every aug. we vacation in the upper penninsula of Michigan in a cabin in the woods on the Taquamenon river. All the locals have said we should come up in the winter. We never thought it would be fun.We had to get out of our house last feb. due to remodeling. We called the owner and he said it,s vacant,it,s yours.
While we were there we had three blizzards in two weeks,10 degree temps.. I have never seen such beauty in all my life as saw walking down fire trails with my wife and two dogs. The snow was like diamonds, all clean and fresh. It was so quiet it felt like cotton in your ears. The skys were royal blue. When your dressed for cold weather, there,s a lot to be said for the upper peninsula of Michigan to take the edges off of most people in this hectic life-style most of us lead nowdays.

I said no, that I went in at Malibu. He sighed, relieved, said thank God, I was ABOVE the city ...that it was incredibly DANGEROUS to go into the polluted water at Santa Monica. The water at Malibu wasn't great but at least he didn't think I'd get sick.

Wow, Vickie. Hats off to the aol dictionary for tracing the origin to 1934. What did Mexicans eat before that?

And, Stu - I know where you're coming from. Here we have Doner Kebabs. The meat used in these is amazingly similar to minced alsatian.

Stu,

You can have it,

Spent 8 yrs. in the Calabasas area. Was packed and ready to move it out when the Calabasas/Malibu fires came within 1/4 mile but I stayed. Got rocked big time by the 94' Northridge quake enough to sleep in the car for the next 10 days. Slept fully clothed for the next 8 months,(did wonders for the love life) but stayed. No vegetation from the fires and then loosened from the quake, I got caught in a boulder slide while driving through Malibu Canyon which totaled my new car before it wiped out the road. Was lucky enough to make it out alive. I finally got hip that it was time to get out. Besides, I'm closer to Nashville where I can make the hit and run jaunts where the action really is. You can have it Bro..!

P.S.

I'm with Nugent...Viva La Detroit...! :)

Whenever I'am In either PLEASANTON ,norcal
or FAMOSA DRAGWAY,BAKERSFIELD,socal,
my main menue is IN and OUT BURGER.
At the strip in Bakersfield FUEL and GAS CHAMPIONSHIP,5 sec's in the 1/4 mile and IN and OUT burgers go together
The GOODGUYS HOT ROD NATIONALS,in PLEASANTON,it's the same,hot rods,street rods,kustoms,go with the
IN and OUT(URGE) BURGER.
One thing about west coast chinese resturants, the food is different then the east coast chinese food
I really didn't want chinese while in BAKERSFIELD,
but I had no choice for I was with four other gearheads,so okay lets go,I'll just wait till they're done and then stop at IN and OUT for me.
well,I learned a lesson while in that place of all chinese family and employes.
When the waiter asked what I wanted,I said I'll just have a bowl of CHILLIE,
holy shit, this kat gets so upset and gives the table a KARATE chop, oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh,
you get no chilrie here, what da fruck wrong wit you.So I said I'll just have a COKE,oooooooohhhhhhh,no cokie colie, squritch only.
I had to get up and go in the parking lot,the whole place was full of drag-racers laughing their asses off,and this was pissing ol hop sing off.
LESSON LEARNED,dont ask for chillie in chinese rest.
I'll send a case of white castle hambergures to whoever for 3hree IN and OUT BURGERS with cheese, and fries.ANY TAKERS????

Earthquakes and all, this time of the year Southern Cal. sounds like a nice place to be.
After going thru some horrible things in earthquakes, I tended to freeze when ever a truck would rumble by,or someone worked near with a jack-hammer.
Let see, I could freeze for a moment under a palm tree, or freeze my ass off here for the next two or three months.Hmmm???

When I first moved out here I went into a local restaurant for lunch and noticed corn beef sandwich on the menu. YUM! I ordered it. Soon the waitress brought me this thin little sandwhich on whole wheat. ( Gary is starting to smile knowingly ) I said..." Oh miss there must be some mistake. I ordered the corned beef ". She told me that is what it was And what "IT" was, was one piece of some sort of processed corned beef about a quarter of an inch thick, that was FRIED on a %#%&^%$ Grill and shoved between two pieces of mother%$%&% whole wheat bread. I'm sure at that exact moment that the realization of the absurdity of this hit me, every decent food lovng Jew in the U.S. shuddered involintarily and uttered an " Oy Vey " and wondered what just went through them.

I waited in the kitchen and out comes this guy straight back to the kitchen and digs his hands into the meatloaf mixture and starts mixing. We paid for our cokes and got the hell out.

I remember going to a restaurant in Los Alamitos called The Claim Jumper. Have any of you Californians ever heard of it or know if it's still open? Speaking of pizza, everybody knows Chicago has the best outside of Italy. Places like Giordano's, Gino's East, Italian Fiesta, Rinaldi's and Edwardo's. During my time in L.A. in the mid-to-late eighties, I tried pizza Califoria style, but it wasn't too great. California Pizza Kitchen, New York Pizza Express on Hollywood & Vine and Spago's on Sunset & Horn ($30 for a pizza?). Putting pineapples and papaya on a pizza is absolutely sacreligeous.

Lynn,

Top Hat brings back memories. I never told this story to anyone, but, it must have been the seed that put me on a track toward Frederick Douglas, Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois and Sydney Poitier.

I was 4 years old. My father took me to Top Hat. It was the first time I saw a black man. I was amazed and intrigued and walked up to him. He looked down at me and I said "Hi Mr. Chocolate Man"! Ahh the innocence of children.

He and my Pop proceeded to laugh and chat. Great memory.

Larry - That was funny. When I first saw a white person, I was about four years old. They were on an army base not far from where I lived. As I looked across the field I could see all those people who were white. But I never asked my parents about them. I just assumed they lived in another world.

Expatriate Detroiters may not know; Hunter House opened a downtown Detroit location that is much chic-er, has a liquor license but offers the tiny burgers in the same old black-and-white bag.

One of our biggest surprises about Nashville was the high quality of the meat and chicken compared to San Francisco. There isn't much in the way of an Italian or Jewish deli but the chicken, pork and beef is pure heaven.

Stu...
A song has come to mind

Day after day
More people come to LA
susshhhh..better not tell 'em
The whole things slippin' away

Where will we go
When there's no San Diego
Better get ready
To tie up the boat In Idaho.

That's why I keep the Cascades between me and the ocean.
(45 and sunny in Central Washington. I may get the motorcycle out)

Is there still an SIR rehearsal studio on Santa Monica Blvd near the cemetary? It's been quite a while since I've been there.
