OK...I THINK I HAVE IT RIGHT THIS TIME. I BELIEVE THIS WILL BE A VERY TOPICAL THREAD FOR SOMETIME TO COME SO LET'S KEEP THE GOOD STUFF COMING

Thanks for this. Allan and I wished we could have found some studio chatter of the guys rapping to each other, to add into the vault tracks. But most of that 'extraneous' stuff was cut in the name of saving tape costs.

And no offense taken re RS. Just sharing an opinion.

Fender 12 string on "You Keep Me Hanging On".. Who knew? (I got the soundtrack CD this weekend; it's great..)

Flashing back to an earlier '12-string' thread for a sec, there's an electric 12 on Chris Clark's "Love Gone Bad". I can see why rock bands used to cover this song.
As far as the soundtrack, is it totally unrealistic and un-feasible economically to do maybe a 2-cd set of various tracks in the manner of "Bernadette" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" on the Soundtrack cd? I can think of dozens of tracks I'd LOVE to hear broken down like that.

Hey Steve, what do you think of that track by Chris clark,Loves gone bad?Amate of mine is a big Chris Clark fan,as I myself am,but I dont know, there seems to be something missing from Loves gone bad,to me anyhow.Or maybe theres something missing from me.Just a fruitless opinion.I could name a lot better by her,but then again,Different strokes for different folks,as the saying goes.Thats also the beauty of music. We all see/hear so many different avenues/roads etc.Regards different tunes.MEL.

Mel; I like "Loves Gone Bad" alot. Its certainly not your typical Motown sound (if there really is such a thing). Are you familiar with the "Nuggets" compilation ? I think it's subtitled "Psychedlic Artifacts and One-Hit Wonders" or something similar. Anyway, "Loves Gone Bad" would be totally appropriate (and a highlight) for that collection. It's almost garage-band like , only with bass playing by God, Jamerson or Babbitt, of course. I'd be curious to know who plays bass on that.

Steve,no Im not familiar with the Nuggets compilation that you mention.Regards the Loves gone bad,I agree entirely with what you say regards it not being a typical Motown sound.(again like you say,if there really is such a thing)but Ive just played Loves gone bad again,I dont know, its just missing that little bit of something for me(not that I am a musician in any shape or form)just in laymans terms.Especially after Ive played Got to get you into my life,I want to go back there again,Until you love someone,Put yourself in my place or Born to love you baby.I am in no way knocking Chris Clark as I have been a great admirer of hers for many a year. But the Loves gone bad,I can see what your saying and where your coming from regards your comments but its just one of her many great tracks that never struck anything in me.Like I said, different strokes etc. Many thanks for your reply Steve,MEL.

Marshall,

Do you mean 12 string on the octave part? Joe Messina's thread states Joe as thinking that was him and Robert White, implying 2 guitars... which I thought as being pretty incredible, timing wise. Maybe I misunderstood. The 12-string seems to make sense, so I'll have to go home and listen again.

Just took a long flight on Northwest and noticed that a couple of cuts from the soundtrack were on the in-flight audio. They mentioned the movie in the introduction and played Ben Harper and M'shell. Joan Osborne was also on doing a bunch of R&B remakes but nothing from the movie. Paul - wouldn't SITSOM be a great in-flight movie for Northwest flights coming into Detroit?

Someone might have picked up on this and mentioned this already, but the soloed Jamerson Bernadette track on the soundtrack is definitely not the bass track on my Four Tops Greatest Hits CD. Is it an alternate take? From this forum I learned that the bass track was only on track 8 of the multitrack tape implying only one track to choose from per take. Harry, can you explain where this track came from?

The track is different throughout, verifying how improvisational Jamerson's lines were, but most evident in the first 4 bars of the bridge.

Please note the annotations in the CD booklet for the soundtrack: it is an alternate take.

And, to be specific, it is two takes cut together. It's the alternate right up to the long pause before Levi comes in. The rest of the tune after that is from the released take.

We had to do it this way as the released version has leakage all over the bass track and Jamerson's part could not be isolated - one of the few where this happens on the tracks since Jamerson is normally direct into the mixing board. Also, this version of Jameron's bass playing is featured in the film and the soundtrack reflects the music in the film. However, the take we found where we could isolate Jamerson simply stops dead after two minutes. For the purpose of the soundtrack we wished to have a complete song. To complete the track we edited on the rest of the track from the released take.

Thanks Harry. Sorry I missed that in the liner notes. Comparing the two tracks is a good example of how Jamerson improvised his parts. I've read many times that he never played the same thing twice, but this gives me a chance to actually hear an example.

Would you mind answering another question? The Bass Player Jamerson article implied that there will be a release of a 2-CD set of more isolated Funk Brothers tracks in the future. Was this accurate? I hope so.

It is intended to be a 'Deluxe Edition' of the soundtrack - disc 1 is the existing album, disc 2 may be a disc of instrumentals. Although we hope a spring 2003 release around the time of the movie's DVD, nothing is yet confirmed.

HW,

Can you explain why the Funk Brothers instrumentals mentioned in your previous post would form disc 2 of a soundtrack "deluxe edition"?

Wouldn't the people most likely to be interested in "disc 2" already own the soundtrack?

Instead, why not package "disc 2" with the DVD?

Top of pageBottom of page   By HW (68.37.219.140) on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 10:16 pm:

As I said, none of it is settled yet. But Allan Slutsky and I have been digging what we have heard so far. Hope we can deliver them in a medium everyone is happy with.

Top of pageBottom of page   By HW (68.37.219.140) on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 10:17 pm:

Whoops, hit 'post' too soon -

A deluxe edition would have deluxe packaging, an increased booklet, more notes and photos, etc.

Another question for HW:

Would Motown ever release something similar to the 3 Stax singles box sets?
