I just read Timi Yuro died over 2 weeks ago!!She had been battling cancer of the throat for a long time. I loved her big, emotional voice(Whats a Matter With You Baby)--a very rare interview with her in the book Soulful Divas--and she had some hope her voice was coming back then(circa 1999 I think). |

Timi Yuro -- a real, deep, blue-eyed soul singer -- deserves a few basic facts stated about her that anyone would expect to read. The prior posts tell nada -- except that she died and R.I.P. Timi was born in Chicago! The "Timi" is short for Timothea. Timi rose to sensational fame in 1961 with her first Top Ten song "Hurt" -- a powerful, soulful, emotionally-draining torch ballard. She was only 18 years young when she recorded it. Other, but lesser, hit songs followed. Timi died on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at her home in Las Vegas, Nevada, from a long battle with lung cancer. In fact, many years ago, her larynx was removed. She died at 62 years (not so old). Her legacy could live on just from the song "Hurt", although she had other hits. One of my favorites is: "Make The World Go Away". Haven't we all felt that soul? God Bless Timi! |

Hi Stonewall; I love Timi Yuro's voice, she deserved more recognition than she got. My favorite Timmi song is "Look Down". S.S. |

I ws so sorry to hear of Timi's death too. My favourite track is "Teardrops Till Dawn" on the Mercury label. It's a lovely mixture of soul and the girl group genre. My two favourite types of music on one record. David. |

Jimmy Mack: you wrote - "...Whats A Matter Baby(talk about anger and passion) still blows me away--Spector + Motown---tho too short a song!!I really cant think of a voice as strong as hers in the power/bombastic way,in a good way sense." Amen amigo! "Whats the matter baby" is truely what would be called a musical "triumph"... even replete with that crisp and almost military drum- and expressing that just retribution for a heart once broken. LOVE that line ( an' still get goosebumps! )- "...and now for me the hurtin's just about over... but baby- it's just startin' for you!" Lord rest that little girl... and the "...voice that got away!" - Butchie www.rockitradio.net PS- ANYone know where a VHS/DVD of any Timi Yuro live performance can be found!? |

I've been a little disappointed by the material that I've heard by Miss Yuro. Most of what I've heard has been from the early 60's when good production meant BIG OVERPRODUCTIONS! It seems as if Miss Yuro's voice gets lost behind those BIG productions in all of those early 60's tunes. I did read her story in the book Ladies Of Soul and it's written that she recorded a few Soul tunes in the stripped-down late 60's style that I prefer. One of the recordings mentioned was a song called 'Cutting In' and another was a live album called "Live At P.J.'s" or something like that. Has anyone heard either of these? |

Hi. I was fortunate enough to work for Timi from 1965 to 1972 - running a fan club in the UK and then as her PA when she cut the 'Something Bad' album in London in 1968. I only learned of her passing today. I am Hurt. much more, oh, than you'll ever know. To answer some of the questions on this board, 'Cuttin' In' was a Mercury single (I preferred the flip side 'Why not now') to my knowledge it has never made it to CD - Mercury refuse to release the tapes. Maybe now. The Live at PJ's album was released in part in Holland in the mid 70's and in full last year by RPM records - catalogue number RPM197. Personally I love the 'Make the world go away' album, and naturally !Something Bad! - RPM have a couple of earlier CD's of her Liberty material. Most of Timi's live performances were pre-video - I have heard of videos that do exist - just never seen them. My favourite song are probably 'Permanently lonely' and 'Thirteenth Hour' from the 1st Liberty contract, 'You can have him' and 'Once a day' from Mercury and 'Interlude' and 'Wrong' from Liberty II (on the latter I helped with the lyrics and made tea whilst Timi whipped the song into shape. Hope this helps - anything else I can help with - just ask - Cheers - Chris - and a private note:- Darling Ro, Look down from where you are, you'll see me if you do - loving you always Your own, goofy greaseball, Chris |

Thanks Chris. I can't wait to hear the 'Cuttin In' and it's flip 'Why Not Now'. It's a shame that it's not on CD yet. Everyone seems to give this song such an excellent review. I'm glad that the "Live At PJ's" album has been released on CD. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for that! |

Cheers Don't get 'Hurt' Chris |

Okay, I am biased, but I feel that there should be some memorial to Timi. So I have just started a yahoo group for her. 'I must have been out of my mind' ('smile'). There's a couple of pics from her 'engagement' to Lou Christie and a promo shot as an inducement (LOL). The address is:- http://launch.groups.yahoo.com /group/Timi_Yuro It is supposed to be indexed (when yahoo gets round to it). And membership to Yahoo groups is a requirement. Cheers Chris |

Very nice website connection for Miss "Y", Chris! In fact, I covered the lower part of Timi's face (the mouth and the chin) and asked my partner here, "Who do U think that is?" He said: LIZA MINNELLI! I did it later with a dinner friend and she said: LIZA! Timi was ahead of her time with the hair style, too! Is she, like Liza, also of Italian decent, do U know? Congratz on starting the "Timi Tribute". She is most deserving.

Timi was 2nd generation Italian/American, her parents Louis and Edith spoke Italian at home and Edith's command of the English language left much to be desired - much to the hilarity of all. Timi had a brother - Tony - a husband - Robert Selnick - and a daughter - Milan. I know of at least one grandchild - name forgotten. The pic on the group was 1968, the 'engagement' 1965 and the promo shot 1963. I have a stack more if I can only figger out how to work the scanner!!!! |
