Does anyone have a copy of Cody's 45 titled, "Come To Me (Girl)? It was on the Pamela label. Who are the songwriters? TIA |

Cody Black was a soul singer and songwriter in Detroit in the mid to late '60s, '70s and '80s. He spent several of his first years with Mike Hanks' D-Town group of labels, recording and writing. He had three pretty good soul records on D-Town, one on Wheelsville USA, and, I believe one on Wheel City?-or another D-Town related label. He also recorded for many small Detroit Labels, like Groove City, Pamela, Ram-Brock, and some others in the'70s and '80s. I don't remember any song of his being played on WVON or any station in Chicago (but I left in '66, only returning for short visits each year). I think I remember finding a record of his on D-Town at Beverly Records (bargain bin) -so at least one of his records got to Chicago. His records did sell in Detroit, and he did appear live there for years. Graham and SD Detroiers can tell you more about him. I tend to like sweet stuff more than hard-edged, bluesy soul, so I don't really like many of his recordings. There were a couple of polished (relatively sweet cuts I like a little). I wouldn't say he was one of the better Detroit '60s soul artists (but, that depends much upon personal taste). |

dvdmike Cody's biggest hit was "Going, Going Gone." As Robb has stated, he made various recordings for Mike Hanks prior to that one, "Mr Blue" being one of my favorites. He did a gig in the UK last month, and has recently recorded a Blues CD. There will be more details on Cody and Mike Hanks in an upcoming article here on Soulfuldetroit. Cody told me that the Pamela label 45 was a Cincinatti recording, made before he went to Detroit. I would like to get the details from the label to double-check. Graham

No Mel, just that one 45. "The Night a Star Was Born" was also released on Rambrock - as you probably know. |

I spoke with Cody Black a few months ago. He was in fine spirits and was looking forward to a then-upcoming tour. Kevin Goins - KevGo |
