Hi everybody I'm looking for some info on United Sound Studio and the tracks that were recorded there. I know Isacc Hayes did some Hot buttered soul stuff there. John Lee Hooker "Boogie Chillun," Marv Johnson "Come to Me," Todd Rhodes "Bell Boy Boogie," George Clinton/Parliment/Funkadelic Some tracks for M.Gaye "Whats Going On" Johnny Taylor "Disco Lady" WHAT did Aretha Franklin or Jackie Wilson do there? What was the first track recorded there? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

There's a book that needs to be written.United was host to a number of R and B and rock royalty during their heyday. Al Hurschman, who was one of the key engineers there now has Alliance Recording and has gone on to do a number of rock, gospel (Winans) and folk/ country /americana artists. Al also owned A-2 Studios in Ann Arbor and did all the Nugent, Rockets and a few of the Grand Funk albums in their prime years. I'll check in with him and see what he has access to in respect to the United info... |

Forum member Ed Wolfrum knew Jimmy Siracuse well and he has good information about the history of United Sound. Without having my notes to hand, I can tell you that the business started in the late twenties as a music supply store. Jimmy invented, or perfected, a lathe and/or other recording equipment. I think he was a machinist. The business was first located downtown, then on Cass, then at its present location. They started recording commercially in the 1930s. You are correct about Todd Rhodes, most of his sides were cut at United. And Hooker's early stuff was done there too. I tried to track down session logs in the mid-80s but didn't have any luck (I was researching Todd Rhodes at the time).

Hi Jim As you know, there were countless recordings done at United. Are you just wanting a list of the bigger hits? Non-hits include the Thelma stuff and nearly all the LaBeat label recordings... it's mind boggling!

Cheers Graham, actually sideburnslim posed the original question about United sessions. I got the necessary Todd Rhodes info from Bernie Besman. |

This could end up being a life's work, putting this list together. There was a guy a couple years ago that called me-he wanted to do a book on ALL the studios in Detroit from 1950 on. Never heard from him after that one phone call. Maybe it was one of you folks. I for one would love a directory of all the recording sessions at United, or better yet, all the local studios. There are many issues with this idea, one is many sessions were done "on the sly" or "non union" or both and the only paper was the green stuff that went from one hand to the other. I, uh,, ahem, have been party to a "few" of these myself. Another is that the ownership changes often negated the filing , or lack thereof , of any records. Lastly (so far) a lot of studios kept lousy records- and still do! With all that having been said, I would be willing to help ( I'm here in Detroit, and know a lot of these folks) to do what I can to assist anyone who wants to take this on. tsa

SSS I have a feeling Aretha recorded "Jump to it" there. Can anyone look at the album credited to confirm this? The current owners told me that Elvis/Barbara Streisand recorded there. Apparently most people visiting/performing in the city went along to USS. (Message edited by David Meikle on April 17, 2004) |

I guess I am mostly looking for hits...but some cool one offs would be great too! I have found out that the stones recorded a version of Jumpin Jack Flash with Aretha Franklin for the Whoopi Goldberg movie with the same name at United |

David Aretha didn't record Jump to it at United. Luther V produced in New York.. there is some recording in Detroit listed but it was at Sound Suite (probably the Four Tops vocals on one of the tracks of the album - I wanna make it up to you. I havent played this in many years but as Paul Riser did some arrangements, Erma Franklin and Cissy H are on BGVs, the late great Yogi Horton is on drums and Doc Powell on geetar, and there's also a Smokey song, it's now on the turntable! Thanks Dave. |
