I've got the Golden "Philly" Classics collection on the Collectables label and the Over the Rainbow: The Atlantic Years collection on the Ichiban Soul Classics label.

The first one I purchased was the Golden "Philly" Classics collection which collects their recordings for the Nicetown/Newtown labels in 1962-63. I remember being a bit disappointed with this collection because critics are always going on and on about how gospel and soulful sounding Patti and her Bluebelles are. THIS IS A FAR CRY FROM GOSPEL OR SOUL! Anything sounds soulful when compared to The Supremes but this CD is still typical Girl-Group Pop. There are a few gems on here though. My favorites are the uptempo stompers 'Decatur Street', 'Academy Award' and the ballad 'One Phone Call'.

The Over the Rainbow: The Atlantic Years collection was a bit more to my liking. The songs are better and the arrangements are more soulful. It wasn't as soulful as I thought it would be but there's still some good stuff on here. My favorites are Patti's original take on 'Over The Rainbow', the big ballads 'All Or Nothing' and Curtis Mayfield's 'I'm Still Waiting' (outstanding!), the stompers 'Family Man', 'Dance To The Rhythm Of Love' and the understated, Nona Hendryx penned 'I Need Your Love'. You'll also find The Bluebelles' recording of 'Groovy Kind Of Love' which was recorded before The Mindbenders and Phil Collins had a hit with it. Good luck getting a copy of this CD though. I had a hell of a time finding one and that was 5 years ago! It was released in 1994.

The Bluebelles recorded some good songs but they were not as soulful (at least on their records) as it has been written. They didn't really start to cut loose until they started recording as LaBelle in 1970. If you want to hear "Gospel & Blues Drenched, Just Don't Give A Damn About The Pop Charts, Girl Group Soul" then pick up any of the many Sweet Inspirations Cd's out now or any of the late 60's/early 70's Sisters Love singles. :-)

I agree with the above posts about Patti and Bluebelles NOT being very soulful. Their Christmas album is just plain bad. They only cut loose when Cindy replaced Flo and Labelle was formed. Some soulful stuff here for sure!

Lookout for a possible Rhino homemade CD of their Atlantic recordings that will hopefully come out real soon, it will include some unreleased material.

As they were known as the Sweethearts of the Apollo were their records "popped up"?

The cat that owned Newtown had them record a lot of junk..."Cool Water" is hilarious to me.I think at that time they were a much better "in person" act then their records."I'm Still Waiting" written & produced by Curtis Mayfield is my favorite studio recording by the group.I loved "Junkman" and that was the first time I saw them was on Bandstand (even though years later find out it was the Starlettes on the record).

I remember "You'll Never Walk Alone" b/w "Decator
Street" on Parkway label with a GREAT pic sleeve.
However, I also have seen "Decator Street" on
Newtown or maybe Nicetown label.
"I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" b/w "Itty Bitty
Twist" was on Newtown credited to "The Blue Belles" and for years it was said Sarah was
the lead singer, but it wasn't even Patti &
her group singing on the record--according to
Patti's autobiography.

"I'm Still Waiting" is also my favourite. Does anyone know the story of their picking that song-and why it didn't go to a Chicago artist-as all Curtis' other gems?

Yes Jimmy, they did record their own version of 'Junkman' and it's included on the Golden "Philly" Classics collection that I spoke of in my previous post.

Can anyone confirm as to whether The Bluebells on Rainbow Records, 'You're just fooling yourself' (also on 20th Cent.Fox as by The Bracelets) is the same outfit, please?

Flynny:

I think the Rainbow record doesn't include Patti, Nona, Cindy, and Sarah.

I read somewhere that the situation with that record was the same as what happened with JUNKMAN, namely, Harold Robinson had some girl group record the song and called them Bluebelles. The only difference was JUNKMAN became a hit, and then Robinson had to find a group to promote the record. Enter Patti and co.

I agree with one of the above posts...the Bluebelles had their moments, but it was with LaBelle that they truly caught on fire...IN fact, the first three LaBelle albums are my favorites...along with their LAST album ("Chameleon"). Vicki Wickham helped them become develop into well-rounded artists...not just vocalists...Nona's songwriting bloomed as did the scope of their interpretation..."Chameleon" is their best "original work" (almost entirely composed by Nona)...Patti's interpretation of Nona's work is nothing less than amazing (Particularly "Going Down Makes Me Shiver" and "Come Into My Life").

I LOVE Labelle. My brother saw them at their peak when Patti was lowered down from the ceiling at Philly Academy of Music. Their harmony and presentation was phenomenal. I love Come Into my life but I need to say I find much of that CD unlistenable--sometimes Nona gets to wandering and I find the cd just noisy overall. I certainly respect others' opinions. I love Can I go with u to Hollywood, You Are my friend and many others. They still have it--they tore it up last year on BET with my fave-What Can I Do For You.
