Songs that were made with a message are songs that I have always termed as 'Call' songs and if the song has a strong message, someone would make an 'Answer' song to it. Some songs of this style were so impressionable that an artist from another label other than the hit songs felt it was their 'vocal' duty to respond to the message that was sent ...lol... Here are a few of my favorites: Tramp - Otis Carla / Papa Was Too - Joe Tex You Beat Me To the Punch - Mary Wells/ You THrew a Lucky Punch - Gene Chandler Woman to Woman - Shirley Ellis/ From his Woman to You - Barbara Mason SomeBody Else's Guy - Jocelyn Brown/(That's Why I'm) Somebody Else's Guy - rap version, forgot the artist. Me and Mrs Jones - Billy Paul/ Me and Mr Jones- forgot who made this...its right on the tip of my brain... Any how...what's the ones ya'll remember SDF? |

Dyva, Barbara Mason's real answer to Richard "Dimples" Field's 'She's Got Papers On Me' is her 1981 hit song 'She's Got The Papers (But I Got The Man)'. 1984's 'Another Man' is more like an answer to her own 'She's Got The Papers (But I Got The Man)'. Barbara confronted Betty Wright (who appeared on Richard Field's song 'She's Got Papers On Me') on 'She's Got The Papers (But I Got The Man)'. I'm surprised that Betty didn't join in on the fun and record a response song of her own. If she did I haven't heard it. Here are some more of my favorite response songs: Marva Whitney - IT'S MY THING (YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHO TO SOCK IT TO) (1969) Marie "Queenie" Lyons - YOUR THING AIN'T NO GOOD WITHOUT MY THING (1970) Both of the above songs are responses to The Isley Brother's 'It's Your Thing'. For some reason I can't think of anymore right now. I'll post more later as they come to me. (Message edited by Rodmann on April 16, 2004) |

Work With Me Annie-The Midnighters (featuring Hank Ballard) Roll With Me Henry-Etta James & Peaches Tower Of Strength-Gene McDaniels You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength-Gloria Lynne Will You Love Me Tomorrow-Shirelles Yes, I Will love You Tomorrow-Jon E. Holiday Tomorrow And Always-Satintones There must have been hundreds of such "answer" songs in the '40s and '50s, related to Cab Calloway's, Louis Jordan's, Charles Brown's and lots of boogie woogie songs, as well as a lot of the early '50s R&B songs. I just can't remember them specifically now. I'll have to post them one by one, as they trickle into my memory. Would the "story continuation songs" of The Midnighters: Work With Me Annie-Sexy Ways-Annie Had a Baby, etc. and The Heartbeats/Shep & Limelights: A Thousand Miles Away-Five Hundred Miles To Go-Daddy's Home, etc. count? What about Charles Perry's answer on the flip to his front side -"Move On Love"/"How Can I". Just kidding here-actual songs not related, but titles fit well! I believe there were several anser songs in early Motown (and/or Berry Gordy-related), in addition to "Got a Job" and "Tomorrow and Always" |

Sixty Minute Man-Dominoes (alias "Lovin' Dan") Don't Stop Dan-Checkers Can't Do Sixty No More-Swallows I Don't Know-Willie Mabon Yes, I Know-Linda Hayes Mannish Boy-Muddy Waters I'm A Man-Bo Diddly 500 Percent More Man-Bo Diddly There Goes My Baby-Drifters I Found My Baby-Lexingtons Rocket 69-Todd Rhodes Orch.-featuring Connie Allen Rocket 88-Jackie Brenston I seem to remember some "series" records by the Robins in the early '50s, and there must have been a lot of "boy-girl"statement and comeback records with titles like "Be True To Me" and answers like "I'll Be True To You", and "Love Me Always" and answers like "I'll Always Love You". I think "Stand By Me" and "I'll Stand By You" was an actual pairing like that-but I'll have to think of the artists. I'd hate to think that The Hollywood Flames version of "I'll Stand By You" was the answer to Ben E. King!!!

"My Girl" wasn't really an "answer song" to "My Guy". But there WAS one for "My Guy". -It was "Your Guy", by Bobby Wells on Mercury. Not very good at all. "Sand In My Shoes" by The Drifters, was a "continuation story song" for "Under The Boardwalk". |
