Due to that unfortunate MJ posting, it started me to thinking, what other urban legends or hoax's that are out there that sounded like they could be true but turned out ot be false? The one that seemed true was Whitney Houston death right after 9/11. Which ones did you all fall for?

Well Dyva.....in 1973, there was an ugly rumor that went out that Soul Train's Don Corneilius died of an overdose. Don himself went on, in the middle of the show and quoted that he is not dead and that he is not dopey enough to put dope in his body. Then of course there was another rumor about George McCrea being dead since the 80's. Also Richard Pryor's death was reported on the news after his accident . I'm not sure if this is true or not but has Benny "Let's Straighten It Out" Latimore (father of Kenny) passed on? I thought that he did back in the 90's but every now and then I'll come across an article that makes it seem as if he's still alive. What's the deal? Thanks. |

The big one I recall was the death of Paul McCartney back around the time of Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road. There were supposedly all these clues on their album covers and in their music, records you had to play backwards to hear John Lennon say "I killed Paul," etc. I remember listening to an hour-long radio program that when through all the "evidence" point by point. It was never clear to me if this was a hoax orchestrated by The Beatles themselves.

I remember when I was DJing in 1979, a rumor went around saying that Anita Bell had died in a car accident. Then there was the one that had McFadden & Whitehead dying. I think that one of the all-time greats was the rumor that Donna Summer was originally a man & had had a sex change. More recently, I remember being at work & watching grown women crying over the reported "death" of Whitney. Immediately, I thought that it was bogus, because none of the radio stations were playing her music. I knew good & well that if her death had been confirmed, the radio stations would have been playing her music incessantly. Then, we had the "death" of Barry White, later it was reported that he hadn't died, but had contracted an illness while in Brazil. Unfortunately, a few years later, that did come true. Then, we had the "death" of Luther. Dyva, I was just about to write about that lady being "murdered" while the Players sang. They had some interesting responses to this in the Billboard #1 R&B & a funk book. I always wondered what makes people come up with this crap. Sometimes I think that people have a little too much time on their hands. Juice Juice |

Juice: I later heard that the urban legend of the Ohio Players song is left that way because of sales...but that there really was a death involved at the time fo the recording of that song. First I heard it was the model that was on the 'Honey' album, that she got burnt to death because of the honey...and then it became her pimp was in the studio and, well...she took a 'beating'...The 'Players' decline to comment even on the VH1 'Behind the Music' series... ...too much time on the hands indeed. |

Hey Dyva!! I've read a few accounts where The Players stated that there was no death involved whatsoever. At the time, they left it alone, as it did lead to more sales. Eventually, they fessed up about it. I believe that it was Sugarfoot Bonner who finally came clean about it. I'll check my books & articles again & if I find the reference, I'll send you the info. Peace! Juice |

I'm not sure if anyone here ever looks at Vice magazine (they've been getting crappier for a while but I digress) but 2 issues ago some fool printed another fool's fake first-hand account of the dead-baby-stuffed-with-coke (tm) urban legend. Furthermore, the pseudonym was the same as the actual person, a well known author in Canadian literary circles if not at Chapters, whom surprisingly hasn't sued Vice yet. |

Don;t forget Paul McCartney's death off of Abbey Road. Started by a Detroit DJ. Thanks was a big one. If only Lennons death was a hoax. |
