What is the name of the gentleman, who replaced Tony Williams in the Platters and is he the same person who sang "With This Ring" and "I Love You 1,000 Times" |

Nosey, I think if you listen more closely, you'll hear quite a difference in the voices and delivery style of the two singers. Tony Williams had an almost unique style (one of those smooth and velvet voices that one can't forget). Sonny had a great voice too, and a more energetic delivery. |

I can definitley tell the difference between the two. I must have been about 8 when I discovered my mothers stash of Platters records. At 8 I recognized how awesome Tony's voice was. I remember spinning "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" over and over and over. I simply loved that man's voice! I did like "With This Ring" but I knew it wasn't my man Tony singing! As a matter of fact until now, I had no idea of who it was. Thanks Ritchie! |

Can anyone tell me anything about how they came to record a version of the Scotty Williams 45 of 'fear of losing you' which is a rare 45 on Mon-a-lee records and even rarer on the early orange issue. Also your not gonna hit me with Tony Williams is also Scotty Williams are you........ cheers mel |

Musicor wanted to cut the group (on many occasions it was just Sonny + some studio backing singers in a NY studio singing over a pre-recorded backing track) on some Detroit cuts as Motown / Golden World were so hot at the time. So they contacted a few of the indie Detroit producers and offered cash for suitable backing tracks. The 'savvy' guys just took existing backing tracks, removed the existing vocals and submitted the instrumental track tape for consideration. Musicor bought a good few such backing tapes and then Sonny & the guys just sang the original words over the existing track. Sometimes, new words would even be written. Thus a different song (title, words, etc.) would be released even though the backing track was 'shared' by both recordings. |
