Hi everybody!
I just have one simple question about The Supremes song "Someday Well Be Together". Who is the male background vocalist on this song? BTW very beautiful song.
Keep the funk!

Funk Timo.

It is JOHNNY BRISTOL, who sadly died a few weeks back.

I can't recall what song it was now, but the B-side (in the UK) also had Johnny's voice on it including a bit where he sings 'Move it on up now,' just before a key change.

Back in 1990, I had the great pleasure of meeting Johnny Bristol when he appeared as a guest on the TV show I was working on. During the dinner break we chatted about music (what else?) and he was more than happy to reminisce about his Motown years. Someday.. came into the conversation and he gave me his version of the story. He said that the rhythm track was done, and Diana had come in to add her lead vocal. But, in his words: "she wasn't feeling it" so he joined her in the studio in an attempt to coax her through the song with a little vocal encouragement. Later, when the track was being played back, it was agreed that his embellishments added something to the song, so they were kept in the final mix. - Well, that was his version of the story anyway :-)

Pretty close to what I understand the story to be, except he was singing to Diana through her cans and didn't know it was being recorded. I think there's a fairly complete discussion of this in the archives.

Interesting story Ritchie. I did the mix on Some Day ... I was alone during the mix and thought Johnnys vocal was suppose to be part of the song, so I put it in.

Hi Russ - well, I did say it was Johnny's 'version' of the story. I guess some tales grow with the telling ;o)

I read it was the Andantes who did the backing vocals on SOMEDAY WE'LL BE TOGETHER.

I would assume it was the Andantes, but I couldn't say for sure.

It was "The Waters" sisters on this track. They sound quite different than the Andantes. Maxine and Julia? Waters did a lot more background on her solo LP.

Hello everyone. Regardless of how it happened, Johnny gave that song some spice & his part gave that song a little something extra. It's said that many great things are born through a mistake. I thank Johnny or Russ for making that "mistake". The song just wouldn't have been the same without it!

Peace
Juice

After the song had been released and was doing well, I ran into Johnnie outside of Hitsville one morning. I told him then, and I stil contend, that One Day is the best Supremes song ever.

Ralph.

And don't tell me whilst Russ was, err, busy, that you were playing scrabble! LOL

The Drifters sang Like Sister and Brother, it should have been Like Brother AND Brother.
