Hi Everyone, I was surprised to learn that Mr. Gordy recently sold the last of his shares of Jobete. Does anyone know if he retained Stein And Van Stock? Also, there was/is a very informative thread on the importance of Publishing here a while back that mentioned Jerry Butler. I was wondering if Mr. Butler owns the rights the great early Natalie Cole songs written by Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy? Thanks. Carl |

Carl, the Stein & Van Stock question is a good one. Wish I knew the answer. As far as publishing companies go, this one is quite formidable. |

Ralph & Carl: I checked the ASCAP website and consulted with a friend of mine who works for EMI Music Publishing. The Jobete sale to EMI M.P. included the Stein & Van Stock catalog (featured songs - "For Once In My Life", "Yester Me, Yester You, Yesterday." As for the works of Yancy & Jackson, Jerry Butler's Music Workshop was bankrolled by Unichappell Music (now Warner Chappell Music) so they control the writers' publishing. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Thanks Kev. Just the " For Once In My Life " rights makes this company worth a lot of money. |

Thanks, everyone. As many have mentioned, publishing is very important to artists. Otherwise you have to perform until the end of your life unless you are able to make great investments. |

Hi Kev, I think we could add Quincy Jones, MJ, Paul McCartney (solo stuff -we all know about ATV.) Prince, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. There are some Morris Levy, Dick Clark and Alan Freed stories that are interesting. I wasn't aware of what the Chess brothers did or the Jerry Wexler stories. Charley Pride and Johnny Mathis took a lot of flack for having a vast audience but they got something out of the deal. David Geffen owned half of Laura Nyro's publishing company Tuna Fish Music and they sold it to CBS. That's good to hear about Smoke. In his book he was really concerned about Mr. G letting him form a publishing company after writing all of those hits for Motown. |

Any more on Smokey's songs? Does that mean he bought them off Jobete at some time or EMI..so that they weren't sold with the rest of the catalogue? Or is it just the songs he published after the 60s/70s?? |

Good question, Mike s. It really gets complicated. And if the artist only sang and gave up his rights, does that mean that no matter what happens in the future, he is out of it all? |
