Theola has a powerful voice, love that tune. She does have another killer record but just can't recall the titled perhaps Chancellor of Soul remembers(?).

I just picked up the UK Kent CD, "The Arock/Sylvia Soul Story", and one track of Theola's is featured on it: "As Long As You Need Me (Want Me, Love Me)".

That was the second of two singles cut for Serock, the first being "The Love Of My Man"/"I Know That He Loves Me" (#2004). The aforementioned song is on Serock 2006, with "This is My Prayer" on the flip.

According to the informative CD booklet, she first recorded gospel, recording "Look to the Hills" with Bishop Louis H. Narcisse and the Mt. Zion Spiritual Choir for the Ajax label in 1955.
She eventually hooked up with Ed Townsend, who oversaw pretty much all of her secular output, and recorded her first solo single in 1960, "The Sound of My Man" (an answer to Sam Cooke's smash "Chain Gang").

Theola and Townsend formed the KT label after she left Serock, and she recorded for that label and also for Mercury ("It's Gonna Be Alright"). Her final sessions, recorded with Jimmy Holliday producing for Stax, were done in the '70s but are unreleased.

BTW, "The Love of My Man" appears on UK Kent CD "The Sweet Sound of Success" and "This is My Prayer" is featured on another Kent disc, "The Birth of Soul, Volume 2".

Best,

Mark

Hey Mark;
Thanks for that. "This Is My Prayer" is the other one I was trying to think of. I think Felix also plays "As Long As You Need Me". Theola has an amazing voice! If I'm listening to Felix's Rhythm Revue and I hear her voice come on...whatever I'm doing I stop dead in my tracks!

Hello, Brother Love, see you in LA next month.

"The Love Of My Man" was based on the Soul Stirrers' "The Love Of God". Their original version featured the late Johnnie Taylor on lead vocals.

Billboard states that Love Of My Man got to #21 pop which surprised me that it got that high. Did Theola die?s

Theola Kilgore's 'The Love Of My Man' is only one of three versions of this song that I've heard and my least favorite of them.

Top session vocalist and former Ikette Venetta Fields did the best version of this song IMO on a mid 60's Ike & Tina Turner Revue live LP. The band could be a little more inspired but Venetta sings with an intensity that I didn't hear on Theola's record. Venetta sang the hell out of this song! Has anyone else heard this?

Another former Ikette Bonnie Bramlett also recorded an excellent version of this song on Delaney & Bonnie's 1970 LP "To Bonnie From Delaney". Bonnie is no match for Venetta Fields on this particular track but she sounds a lot more inspired than Theola did IMO.

Hey Soul Sister,
I can't wait to meet you and give you a big hug. I leave tomorrow to go on the road with Etta James, I hope that we are back. I told her that Jimmy was playing the Bones & Blues and she said she that she will try to check him out if she can.
We just shot her new Cd cover there at the center. What is the date for the show? Please give my very best to the man.
