I haven't seen a thread about this eBay auction on the site yet. Boy, if I had the bread, I'd love to own this baby... |

I posted this on the old forum as a link to the actual auction from heritagecomics.com who is having a huge music auction. They have now linked the auction to e-bay. You still have to register thru them (heritagecomics) to bid. I agree that if I only had the cash - I bid on it at $10,000 but it soon skyrocketed! Regards, Russ |

It's nice to know that a member of this Forum has placed a bid, even though outbidded, on the Upright. Nice going Russ. |

On another current thread, "the bass" is reported to be at $200,000.00 on the auction site. Does it, (or will it), have that value? Certainly someone thinks it does, or will. Sounds like a whole bunch of money to me, but maybe not? What is the historic value of the instrument? Our world is such a small niche... I'm not sure that a Stradivarius demands that price??? Thoughts anyone?

I think 200,000 is the answer to why he might sell it! |

When something collectable reaches that value, it may not be safe to keep it around. It's a pretty high profile item and many, many people now know he has it. Steve K |

On Reuters today, they claim the bass didn't sell - see the link below. BTW, Jamerson, Jr was in a bad car accident and may need the cash for medical expenses...... http://www.reuters.com/newsArt icle.jhtml?type=entertainmentN ews&storyID=4864085 Regards, Russ |

Thanks for the link Blue; interesting stuff. Moe, the link reads that several items were auctioned for less than their estimated value. I'm guessing that all items on this auction site must show the last bid? But it doesn't mean it's a done deal. The owner of the item usually has the option of walking away from a bid that they feel is inadequate. That dollar amount is set in advance and only the owner and the acutioner know what it is. This is what apparently has happened with "the bass", in my opinion. Perhaps the $400,000 "estimate" was the minimum acceptable bid to the owner? It looks like, for now, that it remains in the Jamerson family. Potential future buyers need to think some more about it's value...as does the owner.

Good Afternoon! MagyarEd, if I remember correctly a Stradavarius can go for over a million dollars. In a case such as this, this true value of the piece is whatever a bidder feels that it's worth to him/her. As we have seen from the bidding on Northern Soul 45s, the price is at the bidders discretion. Steve K, as far as the safety is concerned, this is not an obscure piece. If a person was to steal it, they would have to have a way to get rid of it. There would have to be people who would feel that it was investment worthy. The value of that bass would be nil, as most black markets are after paintings, jewels & things as such. No legitimate person would buy that bass, as everyone would know its origins. For those reasons, I believe that the bass is safe. I'm with Dyva, considering the historical value involved here, it would be nice if Motown were to bring it back home where it belongs. Oh well, maybe the price is too high for them to afford. Peace! Juice |

Dyva, I'm sure Motown didn't buy it because they knew LadyM was visiting the museum this summer. :-) LOL

What's the possibility that the bass might still be auctioned with a lower minimum bid on ebay?? |

The bass may have limited value on the black market but there must still be a hefty insurance cost to guard against damage, fire etc.... Who knows what that is costing! |

Yea, I agree with you Juice. (havin' some fun) Give me a violin by Stradaverious, or the Jamerson bass to sell...no contest! The violin will pay for my 3 kids to go to college, post graduate school and their condo's at the beach. My wife and I will retire early. "The bass"..???....

By all rights, any of the FB shouldn't have to sell anything to make ends meet-if thats indeed the case. They should be well provided for as they made a bunch of people a bunch of $. But then, life aint fair is it? |
