I recently heard a completely different mix of tears of a clown on a soul compilation album.I had no idea that two different mixes of this exist. The difference between this and the original isn't in clarity,I understand It's common practice these days to clean up old recordings and with all the high technology software that exists. On this mix the bassline sounds a lot 'flatter' than the ascending/desending original.and the bass is a lot more 'muffled' leading me to believe that someone has overdubed a different bassline to the original.Has anyone heard this version? what's happened?

Soulboy: There ARE two versions of "Tears Of A Clown". The first version was an album cut on Smokey & the Miracles' "Make It Happen". When "Tears" became a hit in the UK in 1970, it was released in the USA with a drums overdubbed and an updated lead vocal from Smokey. That can be heard on almost every compilation and reissue! (It was also available on their 1971 album "One Dozen Roses"). Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Russ: A friend of mine pointed it out to me ten years ago about the two mixes of "Tears Of A Clown." The drum track & Smokey's lead vocal from the 1970 version is different from the 1967 "Make It Happen" LP. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

There is also a third alternate version. Find an original mono pressing of "Make It Happen". It has an entirely different lead vocal, which is very different from the vocal on the other two mixes. Trust me, it's worth looking for! |

Hello Everyone. I'd always assumed that Motown remixed "Tears of a Clown" for the U.S. single release to give it a more "contempory" feel. And perhaps even an "Invictus" feel? The song was a three year old L.P. track when Tamla-Motown in London decided to release it as a single .. I believe that it was SHARON DAVIS, of the U.K. Motown Fan Club who recommended it. Within three weeks it was #1 on the U.K. charts, becoming only the fourth Motown releases to achieve this .. The previous three were "Baby Love", "Reach Out I'll be There" and "Grapevine" (Marvin's version). As a result Motown in the U.S. decided to give it a try as their new single. Musical trends and tastes had changed in the States in the meantime. Hence the remix. Incidentally, in the U.K. it was replaced at Number 1 by "Band of Gold" by FREDA PAYNE and there was one glorious week when Detroit Soul music held all top three positions in the U.K. as this pair were joined by "Give Me Just A Little More Time" by CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD.
