I've alway's felt (personally speaking of course) that an artist should only use 30-35% of what the studio can offer in order to stay true to his live audience. But there have been times when you go to a concert and the artist sounds "nothing" like the recording. I recently saw Ruben Studdard in Philly in concert, and after hearing his cd was mildly impressed.....but the concert was different not nearly as good as he is in a "controlled invironment". Yes, I took into consideration that he's still young to the business, the rigors of touring and also the fact that on any given night anyone can simply not have it...but the vocal quality I expected just wasn't there, and I've heard that the same review has been given to him in other cities. And believe me I'm not one of those who foolishly believes that what you hear on recording is what you get live...has anyone else experienced a live perforamnce that has changed your opinion of an artist ?

NY Dell, Live performance,
This is what separates the winners from the losers. Some of the current crop of so called "divas " can't really pull off a live show.

It's too bad, but very true. Where are all the GOOD soul singers these days?

Because the media rules nowaday...and it's easier to use playback and lipsync..these guys and girls just never get to sing live on a regular basis.Joe Public accepts this stuff on TV..ignorant of the fact they are being duped.
Get a Soul singer from the old days..and let him sing live..they have 20-30 years doing it and paying their dues.Recent examples I have experienced...Phillip Mitchell, Howard Tate & Charles Walker..they wipe the floor with any 'new kids on the block'

Hi Barry,

Don't forget Maxine Brown at Utrecht, who sang beautifully and captured the audience, despite having to struggle with a less-than-stellar backing band. What really impresses me is that many of these artists are quite far beyond retirement age, and yet they put on such inspired and energetic performances..as can be witnessed on the "Only The Strong Survive" documentary.

I saw Jennifer Lopez on TV during the Today show Summer Concert Series...very overrated singer IMO, but seeing her live show, I wanted to pull the sound on her. I heard that Ashanti is the same...nothing like the recording...makes me wonder if they used that vocal changer in the studio to make them sound good. Maybe that's why Britney lip-syncs her songs on stage. Not trying to DISSmiss...I am just calling them how I see them. :-)

Well, at least Aretha is still around. She can mop the floor up with any of the so called modern divas- from Britney to Beyonce and everyoe inbetween...
