Continuing a thread that started elsewhere: 'In The Basement' Magazine. As Eva stated.. this is a great mag and essential for all lovers of 'Real Soul'. I know friends in the US never knew about it..but you really do need to subscribe. http://www.btinternet.com/~inthebasement/itb.html I am proud to be able to contribute..and in the next issue is an Interview I did with a 'legend' of our music Paul Kelly. A recent photo of Paul

Yes Soul Brother I agree ! A lot of soul fans & lovers don't know how good this wonderful magazine is ! It keeps us informed on our great forgotten heroes of R&B / Soul. Paul Kelly is one person that I would love to read about. Two of his cuts were popular here in NY, " Chills And Fever", and " Stealing In The Name Of The Lord". Let's continue to the Soul alive ! Indeed, ITB is one of the most informative soul/r&b mags around these days and LC is THE MAN around these parts! Wherever there is a soul r&b show in our neck of the woods, you are CERTAIN to see LC in the house! |

ITB is the best Soul magazine issued today and when it comes to the buzz on what's up in the world of Soul Music there is nothing better. I've had the pleasure of contributing several stories and photos in the past few years. |

I've only got 1 issue of 'In The Basement', it's hard to find in Toronto. I would however like to give a cyber shout-out to the fine Wax Poetics publication, also an excellent source of funky facts... |

Doesn't Kops Kollectables carry ITB, Eric? I know that I picked up a couple of UK soul fanzines when I visited Toronto four years ago. Best, Mark |

Hi Mark & Phil- I'd subscribe but I studiously avoid that kind of thing, there are too many magazines I like and if start mailing for 'em there'll just be more stuff lying around... Kops may get them & sell out fast, that's where I usually pick up Wax Poetics. |

Erik, what are the sounds covered in Wax Poetics, and how to suscribe ? I don't receive so much mags, only ITB and Soul Bag, a French mag, and I can take one more ! |

Hi Phil, Wax Poetics talks to a lot of interesting people from a soul/ jazz perspective. This issue has a long Eumir Deodato interview, others have featured what is likely the last Weldon Irvine interview, a feature on Fania records, interviews with guys like Lalo Schiffrin and reissue guys like the ones who put out the wonder Mickey & the Soul Generation comp, also graff pieces like a Charlie Ahearn feature not long ago... I highly recommend it but like most of the best zines, it ain't cheap (apx 12$ Cdn)... |

Hey Phil have you ordered a copy of the Togetherness? Like we discussed before I think that one is a great complement to ITB... I know I like them both. Wonder B |

Erik : thanks for the informations on Wax Poetics, alas, I'm definitely not a Jazz fan. Wonder B : not yet, I'm afraid Togetherness is a little too "modern" for me, you know that I'm more into oldies, and that's why ITB is perfect to me. But maybe I'm wrong, and Togetherness also deals with vintage music ? |

Yes Togetherness also deals with vintage music... That's why I suggested you give it a try... just one issue so that you'll know what it's about... cor check out their website... Just look at the issues covers and tell me this is modern rubbish... I am just like you (although a little bit wider in my tastes) and I can assure you that no artist from these current days are featured in the mag LOL Just take a look right here... http://www.goldsoul.co.uk/cgi- bin/index.cgi?page=togMag.html &cart_id= If you are not attracted by this page then I don't know what will LOL Willie Hutch, Barbara Lynn, Bobby Patterson, Archie Bell etc... It's edited by Kev Roberts another great northern soul DJ...and includes articles by Dave Godin (the one who coined the 'Northern Soul' expression), Ralph Tee & Richard Searling ...! Wonder B |

Just curious, Erik--is Kops still carrying oddball soul 'zines like Northern Essence? I'm sure I don't have to ask if they still have a great selection of soul CDs and 45s!! Best, Mark |

I think Kopps stopped selling those Northern Soul 'zines, they were apparently quite expensive to stock and didn't exactly fly out the door, although now that In The Basement and Wax Poetics and the one WonderB mentioned (which I don't remember seeing), perhaps they'd sell better now a couple of years later. They had a nice looking hard cover book on Northern Soul but like many British products it was pretty expensive, at over 50 bucks. They sold a few, though, I think... I keep forgetting to ask about 'the Strange World of Northern Soul' dvd, but I haven't noticed it even though they're the most likely retailers in Toronto (all Canada?) to have that. Still tons of 7" singles, Chris upstairs really knows his soul- the upstairs by the way is now a seperate store, called 'Vintage Sounds'. I don't work there or anything, and I'm only an acquaintance and some time customer, just citing Chris as a good guy to call on for soul singles. |

Wow! Hope I get to read this interview. I saw Paul perform in 1969 as part of a Joe Tex revue. Anyway, he was DYNAMITE on stage and in voice! What a songwriter!!! "A Woman Will Do Wrong" was recorded by Helene Smith out of Miami on DeepCity label and then leased to PhilLa of Soul label (in Philly) as was her lp also titled "A Woman Will...". The song was also done by Irma Thomas on Chess and Dee Dee Sharp on Atco. Is Paul still in Miami? Kinda looks it from the photo. He's just fantastic!

Also, Paul wrote the fabulous Jackie Moore re- lease "Personally" on Columbia. What a song!!! |
