I was reading the former head of Columbia's book and its full of info-his relationship with Sara of Labelle, his ambivalency about signing the Jacksons etc. Very interesting read. |

Is there any way that you can give us this label head's name? Or the name of this new book? |

Ok thanks. I wonder if this is the same guy that Patti LaBelle talks about in her book. The abusive husband of Sarah's that pulled a gun on them or something. I'm not sure. |

Hey Rod! He's referring to Walter Yentnikoff the former head of Columbia Records. I never read this book, but if memory serves me correctly, there should be info about him in the book Hit Men. As I recall, Walter was pretty damn formidable in his day. I seem to remember reading that he gave Clive Davis both his entry into & years later, his exit papers from Columbia over some company funds that were spent. I'm pretty sure that I'm remembering correctly, but,I'll have to get back to you on that. Juice |

Say, what IS Sara Dash doing these days? Loved her "Sinner Man". That takes me back a few years! |

I saw Sara on Mary Wilson presenting girl groups at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2 years ago(I have the video)--she sang a beautiful Our Father. She also appeared with Nona and Patti on BET last year and they sang What Can I Do For You--funked out like it was yesterday. Sara said they run their publishing co. together. Their reunion tour and cd(with Cindy Bridsong singing on some cuts) fell thru I guess. |

The book is "Howling At The Moon" by Walter Yetnikoff and David Ritz, published by Broadway Books. The book is no great shakes and not terribly reliable as music history (somehow Walter was entirrely ignorant about all the money independent promoters were paying to get Columbia artists on the radio). It is entertaining in spots, but it wears you down after a while. |

Hey Rod, I think that the book Hit Men might give a more balanced view of Mr Yetnikoff. He sounded like quite a handful. Juice |

Hmm...David will be at my house tomorrow, I'll ask him about it! I remember when David went out to Yetnikoff's house in the Hamptons for his first interveiw of him. S.S. |

Both Walter Yetnikoff & Clive Davis started at Columbia Records as corporate lawyers. Clive ascended to label president, Walter was next in command - Goddard Lieberson was the label's chairman. Clive was removed from the position of label president in 1973 and Goddard replaced him with Yetnikoff. Kevin Goins - KevGo |
