How old do the songs have to be before we can call them able to "stand the test of time"? ...just wondering (since I'm tempted to list Juicy Fruit by Mtume LOL) |

The Way We Were...Gladys or Barbara's version Purple Rain - Prince K-Bee: I think that it depends on the songs impact, across the board for every race of people, how often it was played, its impact on a community, was it used in movies or televison..etc...and it will probably have to be 20+ years old and better. Just my opinion. |

Dyvanaye, I believe you're right on how to define the "test of time" thing. It's all a question about impact and general status among music listeners worldwide. However, the thing is that what I often consider classics tend to go largely unnoticed by everyone else LOL. Another thing is that there's often a fine line between a song being a classic and being overplayed....for instance - song's like Aretha's "Respect" and Temptations "My Girl" are great tracks on paper but I've just heard them to many times to fully appreciate them anymore. Do anyone feel the same way - can classic songs suddenly become annoying to you? |

Yes! The statement 'standing the test of time' also is a set of cover words for 'played too damned much'...lol but for preservation sake we just co-sign the hype just so that the quality stuff stays on the air and in the stores. LOL. |

The funny thing about some of the disco stuff ("I Will Survive" is a good example) is that after a period of burnout, it sounds good again. Kev-Lo.... .....I definately agree with you on the Al Green. There is a certain timelessness to that song that will last forever. Tyrone Davis "Turn Back The Hands Of Time" has the same quality. |

This is a tough one, just because there are so many. For me, that's the magic of the Motown era as the tunes hold up so well. Same with the Stax/Volt records. Its amazing when I play CDs from the Stx Volt Box set for kids these days, they know about half of the songs from commercials and oldies shows and are entranced by the rest the first time they hear them. Same with the Motown box |

Lady, 'I Only Have Eyes For You' has even more longevity than you think! It goes all the way back to 1934 and was introduced in a film called DAMES. 'At Last' is another old gem that goes all the way back to the 1940's and was first popularized by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra in the film ORCHESTRA WIVES. I actually prefer some of the early versions to Etta James' recording of it. Here are a few more old standards that just won't go away: MY FUNNY VALENTINE (1945) GEORGIA (1922) |
