I listened to 70s anthology today and realized I dont know for sure who is doing lead on Your Whats Missing In My Life--I had always assumed only Scherrie--then I thought I heard Mary in a higher key--now maybe its both--help! Knocked out by Sha La La Bandit--lost hit--love Cindy on her lead. |

It's Scherrie and Mary both sharing the lead. Mary sings.. "I thought my life was happy.. I thought that I was fulfilled"... then Scherrie sings.. "Then You enriched my life.. a whole new world was revealed"... then Mary again... "I never really lived unitl you showed me how.. you changed my whole life, my heart knows it now". |

But surely there was only ever one true lead voice of the 70's Supremes, though not knocking the others in any way or form That being Jean Terrell - a real talent, why her A&M career was not much bigger I will never know. I am looking forward to her Jazz Album she has recorded which is due soon and of course Jean's DVD. John (Message edited by jaybs on April 11, 2004) |

John I agree with u --I think Jean was the best singer EVER at Motown(ok Gladys and David are close too)--tho her voice on PBS recently was very shaky--do her current performances vary? |

I understand the DVD is completed and that the Jazz Album is being mixed - from recent photo's Jean looks so well. The PBS I was told she was cut off the TV broadcast as she was ill, but it was going to be left on the video? Jean has always kncoked me out, her voclas and her looks! She also took such a nice page in the LIVE WITH LEVI programme - a True Lady! John |

Yes--I saw about a minute of it and her complete perfromance is also available on the net. She didnt seem to have much range and Freddi Poole and other backup were very loud and semi-took over from what I heard/saw. She did look wonderful. |

I have never thought of Scherrie Payne as being the best Lead of the Supremes (70").I much preferre Mary's leads are her and Scherri's duets than a whole song with Scherrie on lead I will say I loved her voice on show tunes and she did a fabulous job My World Is Empty, although I think she should never EVER sing Stoned Love .Jean is a fabulous singer and I hope to hear from her soon ! |

I am a bit mystified by all the Supreme related topics on this board. As a lifelong Detroiter, I can't recall anyone owning a Supremes album, or record- with the exception of "Someday We'll Be Together"- everyone seemed to like that one and maybe one or two other records (and the latter line I'm just throwing that one in for the hell of it) I honestly don't remember anyone really "loving" the Supremes. I was a kid who really enjoyed looking at albums and reading liner notes, so when I would get to an aunt's/cousin/friend of the family/my friends- anyone house who had albums, I made a beeline straight to them. I really don't remember anyone owning a Supremes album. Everyone had a few if not ALL the Temptations and Marvin Gaye albums, Four Tops, Smokey, No Supremes. A lady I worked with(who was in her early 50's), she and I were discussing the Supremes and she said the same thing. Did the black folks of Detroit, really not embrace the Supremes (like we did the Tempts and Marvin)? as the rest of the country/world did? Or was this just something happening in my neighborhood/s? I must say that although I wasn't even born when the Supremes had their first hit, (I wasn't born when the Four Tops/Tempts/Smokey had their first hits) as a kid growing up in D-town, the Motown sound was just "there", you could not escape it. So you became quite familiar with the songs at a very early age. For the record, I really didn't care for the Supremes as a kid, I like them now. (Forgive me if something like this has already been discussed, I am a newbie here) |

Morgan, welcome aboard. My friend, I hear you. You are fortunate that you are in this new forum saying that. In the old forum, you would have been besieged by several Supremes fans & Diana/Mary fans. You would have been challenged to flying wigs at 20 paces. It's refreshing to read your words. I did like The Supremes, though I was very young when they were in their glory years. I wonder how many people felt as you did. Juice |

Are there any Cindy Birdsong leads that we don't know about. What about Lynda lawrence leads? It's been said that Stevie Wonder wanted her to do the lead to "Bad Weather". Does that lead exist? |

I don't think Cindy ever had any complete leads. She had short lead parts in REACH OUT AND TOUCH and BABY, YOU'VE GOT WHAT IT TAKES. Both can be found on THE MAGNIFICENT 7 duet album with the 4 Tops. She also had a section in THE SHA LA BANDIT on THE SUPREMES 70s ANTHOLOGY. |

Hi! Cindy also can be her on her short part of the song, "Up the ladder to the roof". Lynda Lawrence to my knowledge filled in/sang lead for Jean when she was ill for a concert. Mary called Cindy back. I understand Lynda did a great job, though I've never heard her solo voice before. Hey Reese! Handsome |

Yes, Roddee. At least, Cindy Birdsong recorded two leads for the "High Energy" album: "Till the Boat Sails Away" and "You Keep Me Moving On" but they were not released, in part because Pedro Ferrer replaced her with Susaye Greene before the album was out, although she sings background in all of the songs. There are copies of these and other Birdsong solos sold on Ebay from time to time, but the sound quality is not good in most of the songs and reportedly the two from "High Energy" were not finished, those are not final mixes. According to Harry Weinger there are more leads by Cindy in the Motown vaults. If you are interested in solo works by each member of the Supremes, send me an e-mail (est@sinfo.net) and I can make you a copy of a CD-r I made for myself called "Life After The Supremes" as a gift. It includes: 1. Like You Babe / Florence Ballard 2. Green River / Mary Wilson 3. And If You See Him / Diana Ross 4. Storybook Romance / Scherrie Payne 5. In the Night / Susaye Greene 6. Don't Stop Reaching for the Top / Jean Terrell 7. Save Me / Mary Wilson 8. Dancing Room / Cindy Birdsong 9. Pure Energy / Scherrie Payne 10. I'm Not Taking a Chance / Lynda Laurence 11. Rising Cost of Love / Jean Terrell 12. Turn Around / Mary Wilson 13. Forever Faithful / Florence Ballard 14. Bewitched (By Your Love) / Susaye Greene 15. I Will Survive / Diana Ross (Message edited by edgar on April 23, 2004) (Message edited by edgar on April 23, 2004) |
