Hello All: This post is mostly for the Detroit/Michigan SD members. Would anyone be interested in getting together sometime to listen to 45's? You bring a stack, I bring a stack, we all bring a stack and have some fun and commeraderie sometime in the future. You don't need to own 45's to come and play. If anyone is interested please respond and we will set up the time, place and when we can have this shindig. SD 45 SHINDIG Lots of Java, Squares and Vinyl Lust |

My collection of 45s is in boxes somewhere in my parent's basement, and therfore probably not very playable anymore. However, I wouldn't mind listening to what the other SD'ers have in their collections. Please keep me informed. Thanks. garmoo2002@yahoo.com |

Wow. I thought everyone on the forum was from outside the States. I had two people call me with the same proposition a couple months back. One in the punk/hiNRG R'n'R vein and the other friend is into jump blues/soul/garage/whatever. This sounds cool. I'm a stone's throw from Woodward and 13 mile. |

Hello Brian T. Welcome aboard, we are looking at next weekend or some day that following week. Shoot me an e-mail and we will try to coordinate this shindig. Should be a good time, if we each bring 10 to 15 tunes there should not be much over lap and I am sure we will have some sweet music. I will bring a digital camera & take a few pic's we can post on SD. Then we can raise our glasses to those who couldn't come, Sorry Mel, Tony, Andy. I promise that one day when I get a free week I am going to get on a plane with a crate of goodies and come over to L Town and pester you mates into taking me to an ALL NIGHTER and get a feel for the UK way when it comes to Soul. Any way we will toast one in the UK's honour (like the spelling) lol.

Hello All: I thought I would get a jump on the 45's I am going to bring to play. In my mind I thought it would be easy to pick out 10 to 15 tunes. Well I started going through 45 boxes and picking out just a limited number from each box, only the ones I thought were the right ones, after about 25 boxes I have a stack of 45's that is about a foot and a half high. Not quite that simple to just pick out a few. lol Which ones do I choose? Do I choose 70's or 60's soul, Philly or Funk? Northern or pre-Disco club dance classics? So I have decided no more going into the remaining boxes, I will work with what I have pulled so far. All I can say is good luck to the rest of you when it comes to deciding what you are going to bring and play!!! Gary I am begining to think you may have the right IDEA! on this one. Do I Choose? Marsha Hunt - Oh No Not The Beast Day The Four Sonics Plus One - Tell Me Your Mine Dorothy Williams - Watchdog Lee Rogers - Love And War Basic Black & Pearl - There'll Come A Time, There'll Come A Day Gino Washington - You Got Me In A Whirlpool Funky People - Everybody Hustle El Coco - Mondo Disco Black Soul - Black Soul Music The Sisters Love - Give Me Your Love' Jackie Lee - African Boo-Ga-Loo Liquid Pleasure - Take A Little Love Chapter Three - I'll Never be the Same Fatback Band - NJIA (Nija)Walk Black Rock - The New York City Bump The 2nd Verse - Be Here In the Morning The Talk Of The Town - Little Bit Of Lovin' Reggie Garner - Half a Cup The Real Thing - Stone Cold Love Affair Bingo - Can't Get Enough Hokis Pokis - Nowhere El Chicle - Streakinmg A Go Go Jodi Gales - You Gotta Push Free Spirit - Love You Just As Long As I can Bobby Marchan - Bump Your Booty 5 Specials - The More I Get To Know You Four Below Zero - E.S.P. Bad Bascomb - Black Grass Intruders - Do You Remember Yesterday or one of the many many others, the choice is getting hard to make!!! lol Any imput would be welcomed. Soulaholic. That INTRUDERS 45 you mention is a superb double header. The "other" side "I Bet He Don't Love You" was the official "A" and would probably have been the first INTRUDERS song I ever heard back in 1971/2. They used to play it on AFN radio out of Germany which I could get in England at night. Wish I could make it, have plenty of fun. Roger |

I just love listening to the sounds and hearing from folks who have the know. I live in Windsor so I'm not far away. (I have a wonderful view of Dettroit from my front window.) |

Hey Tony: I am working on a web site were we can post tunes to play only to one another. I am not a one of those komputer whiz's so it will take a little time but when I get it done I will let everyone know. As to your question Yes I am going to post the tunes played and take some photo's to post about what happened. I believe that there are enuff SD members in the UK that you should be able to have a get together of your own and do the same.

Hello All: Last night was the 1st meeting of the SD45CC - Motown Chapter; (Soulful Detroit 45 Collectors Club). The following members from the SD web-site showed up and spun a few 60's & 70's Soul Records. Gary, Joe Moorhouse,Sideburnslim and Dana along with my self (Soulaholic) Brian T was their in spirit, he had to work the late shift. We will see you at the next get together on a weekend Brian. We got together in Ferndale at the Woodward Ave Brewery. So there was lots of Pint's, good food, great conversation about music and quite a few 45's took the spin on the turntable. The music this evening was basically in two camps the Detroit sound from the 60's was in full effect; Nolan Strong, La Mont Anthony, Ed Crook, Carolyn Crawford, Tommy Neal, Bill Coday, JJ Barnes and many more Detroit sounds where played. On the other side of the coin was the 70's soul sound with a strong rep for the Philly sound; Realistics, Hypnotics, 5 Specials, Philly Devotions, Velvets, Little Dooley, Free Spirit, De Blanc, Fantastic Johnny C, 4 Below Zero and many more. Along with The incredible Bongo Band, Blackblood, The Equals,Intruders, Darnell Simpkins, Jay & The Techniques, Gino Washington,Fatback Band, Marsha Hunt, Jodi GalesBad Bascomb, Younghearts, The Dynamics and a few more on top of those. I would say that about 60 tunes hit the wheel during the 3 1/2 or so we where together. The conversation crossed a wide spectrum of what and when Soul music was the best 60's vs. 70's, A discussion about the Northern scene, record buying, how each of us got into the scene. Of course there was a little conversation about the SD site and some of our favorite post's. It was interesting to see how each individual had a take on a certain artist and then to hear a tune that was in a different style than what they where known for. There was a conversation about how each of us had a record from someones collection that had their name and street address on a lable on the 45 (James Bunton, from Ypsilanti, MI.) James where ever you are now we all say thanks for taking good care of your records. We all feel that you had a killer collection once. lol Now on the other hand Barry Felder where ever you are now, you beat the crap out of your 45's and carving your name in the vinyl was not such a good thing. Great collection poor care of them though, Joe Moorehouse believs you justed loved them to death. Gary had some great stories about growing up in Detroit and living within a few blocks of David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Jackiw Wilson and the wonderful Ms. G. Knight. I guess Alvins on Cass was a happening place once.

What is that record you are holding .. it looks like a U.K. release ( as it has a little hole in the middle ) .. and the only ones I know of that came out here on Midland International were .. "I'm In Heaven" by TOUCH OF CLASS or "Midnight Love Affair" by CAROL DOUGLAS. That "Soul" 45 looks like DAVID & JIMMY RUFFIN? What was the Blue Thumb 45? Roger |

Hello Again All. Thanks for that information Soulaholic. I'd forgotten about LIQUID PLEASURE .. I think I have that on a U.S. 45 and its a little too "disco" and not quite "soulful" enough for me. Roger

Great music, great beer, lotsa laughs with nice people. Thanks for putting this thing together, Brian. I've awarded myself a Masters Degree in '70s Philly soul as a result of all the stuff you spun last night--wouldn't have been surprised to pass the Liberty Bell on my way back to Ann Arbor. Next time we can bring a nice stack of amps and blow that bar's sound system back to the stone age where it belongs. |

Hi everyone. I'm a little jealous that I don't live in the Detroit area. Soulaholic,- I'm a big Gino Washington fan. What label was "You Got Me In A Whirlpool" on? What number? What year did it come out? Any chance you could put a scan of it on this thread? |

Thanks, Soulaholic. That's one I missed. I've got all his '60s cuts, but only AT 2743 "It's Winter(But I Have Spring Fever)" w/Picture Cover, and 2880 "I Lost You Girl", from the '70s. They're surprisingly good, considering the fact that I don't generally like much soul music after 1972. |

Hi Soulaholic, Im so sorry that I could not attend the party, although I would have loved to. Looks like you all had a great time!. We were so busy and were really down to the wire. Hopefully, this July, Lord willing I will be able to see everyone at the SD function. Juice, Free Spirit was a short lived group from Philly led by the late, great Tony Sharpe, formerly of Tony and the Masquins.(Ruthie Records, early sixties) Their song "Love you just as long as I can" was the FIRST record ever mixed by Tom Moulton. It hangs on his wall, right in the center of all of his great mixes!! |

Roger, John Oates was not a Temptone, only Daryl Hall. John was with the Masters on Crimson. They met at the Wynne ballroom in west Philly when they were both on the bill and a fire allegedly broke out and the rest is history. The Temptones were: Daryl Hohl(Hall) Paul Fogel Barry Glazer Brian Utain Ken Halpern |

Hey Soulaholic, I'll and reach Eddie tonight. He'd REALLY enjoy going to Detroit and he'll fit right in with all of the happenings. Let me just say once again, that I am totally sorry that I missed the soire. Yeah, the Free Spirit things should have taken off, but they were probably the very last ever Chess 45's and by then it was only a GRT imprint and a "stepchild label" Free Spirit were a "holdover" doo wop group who fit into the seventies world. They came up with some very original harmony configurations too. The flip of Mr Fixit man, Where did the good times go, written by Ron Tyson and myself was also a sleeper, in a nostalgic vein. Tony Sharpe was a MONSTER lead singer and if the group would have continued, they really would have reached dizzying heights! Its so sad that he passed away around two years ago from post opereative complications. Ido however, from time to time hear from several of the other guys , but Tony was the "spirit " of the group. |

Hey Bobby: I know you where buzy with a few other things and it was a last minute invite. Thanks for trying and in July we will play a few 45's. Yea having Eddie B will be great fun! As far as Free Spirit they had a magical sound and yes Tony was the voice of that group. The lyrics were not to bad either!lol Looking forward to finally meeting you in person, good luck with the FE project I have a feeling it will be sweet! |
