My grandson is playing bass in a band supporting Wishbone Ash tonight and Paul Young shortly. I gave him Allen's book on Jamerson for his birthday and he was thrilled.

What's up Kev? My son likes some of the classics. He's 21 now, so most of his friends are into Hip Hop. What I do is tell him what songs were sampled in today's songs. Example, Kanye West sampling Luther & Marvin's Distant Lover. I just let him know that there's nothing new under the sun. He was used to me DJing & making tapes, he still listens to a few tapes that I made 10 years ago. |

Kev-Lo here's a little story about my baby girl (just 5 years old a month ago) About music training, I am not forcing her in any way but she made me very happy a couple of weeks ago. I had bought that 6 CD series from the Music Machine company last year. They are basically karaoke CD's but whereas the other stuff is filled with 25 synth-cheap-drum-machine re-played songs, these are made with the support of Motown and there are nine songs on each CD all directly from the master tapes (all 6 CD's are nothing but Motown hits). First, the 9 songs are featured with music and backup vocals on the left and the lead singer on the right, so you can study the phrasing, and then the same songs appear in regular stereo without the lead vocals... A great way to discover the unbelievable talent of the Funk Brothers like you were in the recording room at the time of the recording... just unbelievable... the story that follows just gave me the answer to my life long question, what makes a classic song... classic? Anyway.... I was in the car and started to play 'Bernadette' by the Four Tops... Emilie (my baby) was riding in the back and when the song ended she asked for me to put it on again (remember it that was the first time she was hearing that song) as soon as the second play ended she declared that this one song was her 'most favourite of all times'! LOL See how good music touches the hearts of the pure and innocent... what made me even more happier was that the Four Tops are my favourite Motown group and in my top five of all time, and that Bernadette is my favourite Tops song... what's even more funny is that of course she can't sing the lead lyrics (she doesn't speak english yet LOL), but she sings the backup vocalising... only an octave LOWER than the real Tops... I don't know why ... (although unlike most little girls she hasn't that squeaky high voice and in fact has a lower range than most boys her age... no she's not one LOL) so she keeps doing the oooh aaah's and I sing along with her but at the real pitch, which makes her laugh to death! LOL Now I also got the Ed Sullivan's DVD's where the Tops sing Bernadette so now she's trying to emulate their choreography... you should see that... way too funny! So she would make me play 'Bernadette' 25 times in a row... a week later I tried to introduce another of my favourites, 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' by Marvin & Tammi... she said right from the first note "No, Papa, I want Beeeeenaadette" -cos' I explained her that you don't pronounce the'r' the french way LOL - So I told her 'Give it a shot, you'll see this one is great too' Then after hearing the song... She just declared that this was another 'Most favourite song' LOL So we're in the middle of a 100% Motown playlist here because she won't hear nothing else right now! LOL And I ain't complaining... I know at some point I will have to deal with her love for some current singer, but she'll have a strong foundation built on quality music so I hope she can see the difference... Wonder B

I don't have any teenagers yet (my little woman is 5) but I get a kick when my younger cousins, etc. come over and they hear a classic and they would tell me that they bit off a new jack ie. Leon Haywood biting off Dr. Dre...so funny! |

My daughter loves them all...in fact while I was pregnant with her I played music all of the time and it was mostly the classics. When she was born, my grandmother was at my house helping me (thank goodness I had her at that time...she was a TREMENDOUS help!) and I was playing Gladys Knight and the Pips I HEARD IT THOURGH THE GRAPEVINE and upon hearing her sing (she was almost 2 weeks old), she opened her eyes the whole time Gladys was singing I am not kidding! When the song was done, my daughter went back to sleep! My grandmother just looked at each other like, "Did that just happen?" |
