First off let me start off by saying that I am THE Cheryl Lynn fan/expert around here! LOL. Like I've said in several topics on the old forum, she's my favorite singer of all-time. I've made no secret of that! :-)

On a topic I started about Cheryl Lynn a few months back on the old forum, bassist Allen McGrier said that he ran into Cheryl recently at a Sears in California and she said that she's working on a new album. I hope that this new album will be released in the US unlike the last one. I did hear her last CD "Good Time" and I was a bit disappointed. It seemed like a rush job and the generic beats didn't allow Cheryl to stretch out. She deserved much better! The songs 'Good Time' and 'Don't Wanna Be Mistreated' are excellent though.

I'd like to see Cheryl get a somewhat organic production on this new album like her "In The Night" and "Instant Love" albums. She needs tunes that allow her to really stretch out vocally. That's what Cheryl Lynn is all about! I just would hate to see her singing over soulless/generic/Ashanti style synth tracks. It would also be nice to see her featured on some new House/Club songs as well since she had some HUGE success on the Club/Disco charts early in her career. The Club/Disco fans seem to be the only ones that truly understand the talent that this woman has!

It's really a shame that she didn't/doesn't get the respect that she deserves. Showbiz makes me sick sometimes! :-(

That's so true Lady. Her vocal range is amazing! She can go from a deep contralto to Minnie Ripperton notes in a heartbeat. And everything in between! One of the things that I love about Cheryl's vocals is how she hits these loooooooooooooong notes and STICKS WITH THEM! She doesn't do the vocal gymnastics (up and down and around and around) that K-Ci, JoJo, Beyonce, Wanya Morris (of Boyz II Men), Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and all of their imitators have run into the ground. Even Whitney Houston who can hit the notes and started off as a clean singer is doing that crap now! (Listen to her 'One Of Those Days' and 'Heartbreak Hotel' singles) Sometimes it's OK to just hit the notes in one long stroke. Why does EVERYONE have to do the same Stevie Wonder/Karen Clark-Sheard riffs today? Come back Miss Lynn! We need you! LOL

I hear ya...the only other one that I can think of right now that can do what Cheryl does is my girl Melba Moore! :-)

Hey Lady. I love Miss Moore to death and I agree that she could hit the notes like Cheryl when she wanted to but they are two different types of singers. I think that Melba is more of a restrained, mellow/soothing singer who sang things pretty straight until the very end of the song and then she would "give us some". Cheryl on the other hand is a "dramatic singer" who's style was a bit more exciting than Melba's. Cheryl would give us the first verse straight but after that it was fair game and she was all over the place! LOL. She used her full range a lot more than Melba bothered to on most of her recordings. They're both great singers who have some similarities but they're still different. :-)

I like Melba Moore too and most of the stuff she did with kashif was outstanding. However, when it comes to sheer vocal power and soulfulness, cheryl's in a totally different league than Melba if you ask me.
Give Cheryl Lynn the right track and she's unsurpasseble!! Sadly she's been dealing with way to much material that can only be described as rather ....pedestrian

You're so right K-Bee! When Cheryl gets good material SHE DELIVERS! When her material is "pedestrian" (boy, has she had her share of it over the years!) it's like a train wreck. It's so frustrating that her record labels have refused to acknowledge her talent and given her so many crappy songs and such horrible production sometimes. It's like handing Luciano Pavarotti a song like 'Yeah' by Usher! :-(

If the musical genius Allen McGrier (who I've been a huge fan of for years but I'm just now realizing it!) is still around here and has registered with the new forum will you please let us know if you have heard anything else about Cheryl's new album since you saw her last year? Thanks. :-)

Rodmann,

Though far from a genius I am, I do appreciate your appreciation of my attempts to contribute to the love that music gives us all. Unfortunately I've not heard anymore about Cheryl's project. I'll make sure to keep my ears open for any news.

Allen

:-) You're too modest Allen! I'm a huge fan some of the projects that you've been involved in from Teena Marie (Square Biz, Ooo La La La, etc.), Rick James (Cold Blooded) and Cheryl's classic 'Shake It Up Tonight'.

I really enjoy your work Mr. McGrier. It's funny how I liked all of these different songs by different artists and now I'm finding out that some of the same musicians were involved. I was looking over your credits at allmusic.com and the list seems short. I've got a feeling that you have been a lot more prolific in the studio then that half-baked discography suggests. Is there any place online where I can get a more complete discography of your work? I'm also curious as to why folks like Ray Parker Jr. and Rick James have failed to give you proper credit on projects that you have played on. How many other smash hits have you been involved with and didn't get your proper credits? What's up with that?

I just want everyone to know that this topic prompted me to go back and listen to Cheryl's 1996 "Good Time" album again. It's not as bad as I originally thought. In fact some of the songs like 'Guarantee For My Heart', 'Good Time', 'Don't Wanna Be Mistreated' and 'All My Loving' (not the same tune that appears on her first album) are excellent! I guess I just had to get over the initial shock of hearing Cheryl on something that sounds post 1980's. I don't think that the mid 90's production on "Good Time" has aged as gracefully as the somewhat organic production of her 70's and early 80's albums but it's still pretty good. Any Cheryl Lynn is better than none at all!

This thread isn't about me. I've played on a few records. I was lucky that the few I happen to play on, got airplay and some attention. That's all.

I was so excited when I heard cuz they always get some watered down fool to do covers on these commercials..But that IS Cheryl..I'll put money on it!

Juice, there's a Pantene (I think that's the brand) Shampoo commercial running right now and it features Cheryl Lynn's 'Got To Be Real'. It sounds like they actually brought Cheryl back into the studio to re-record it. Sly and I are grateful that they didn't bring in some soulless unknown to sing it because it would've have sounded cheesy.

I should add that Pantene has a few other Shampoo commercials out now as well where they are playing Soul classics. I can't remember what the other songs are though.

I started reading these posts and when I saw the name Allen McGrier, I said to myself, "I've seen his name on some albums,Teena Marie and then I said Ozone!!!!' Before I could refresh some of your memories, I had to smile because I see that Wonder B has mentioned the group!!! Gigolette was my jam!! They haven't played that on the radio, since it came out in '81. I found a sample of it on the computer and my face just lit up, I'm serious, i have not heard this song in over 20yrs and it still sounds new. I found myself singing and smiling, this group was awesome, they played those instruments!!!! I agree with a lot of you here, the music business sucks these days, it seems as if the old groups have been put out to pasture with no record deals and no one willing to invest good money to bring them back!! They would rather have a 15 minute famer than someone with longevity. The sad part is that some of the people in the music biz are so young, they don't even know some of the old school groups, but they get paid to make big decisions about the next Britney, whatever!!!!!
