Okay, yall, I got a question that has been bugging me for years. I was wondering if the "70s slow jam "Why Have I Lost You" was made by the same group Cameo who made "Word Up" and "The Single Life" in the '80s. I cannot find this song on any of their greatest hits collections, which leads me to think that it might have been two different groups with the same name. Anyone know??? |

NYC Diva: Yes, the same group that later recorded "The Single Life", "Word Up" and "She's Strange" was the same Cameo that cut "Why Have I Lost You". In the beginning, Cameo had up to ten members. After they released "Flirt" & "Alligator Woman" in the early 1980s Larry Blackmon pared the group down to a trio. There are a few compilations that contain "Why Have I Lost You" as well as the original album (all are on CD): "Anthology" (2CD set - contains "Cameosis" version of "Why Have I Lost You") "We All Know Who We Are" (contains Version 1 of "Why Have I Lost You") "Cameosis" (contains Version 2 of "Why Have I Lost You") "The Ballads Collection" (with both versions of "Why Have I Lost You"!) Have fun! Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Actually Cameo was briefley a Quartet before stripping down to the trio format. At least that's what the "She's Strange" back cover shows. I believe guitarist Charlie Singleton left just after this was released, making an unsuccesful solo album. He returned to the band in the mid 90s. |

Hi NYC Diva. Cameo actally made Why Have I Lost You on 2 occasions. The versions sound slightly different. Their first version (which I prefer) appears on their 1977 LP, We All Know Who We Are. The second version appears on their 1980 LP Cameosis. The second version is a bit slicker than the original & was released after the success of Sparkle. These brothers had many great ballads on their LPs & many of them should have been hits on their merit. There is an overview of their LPs in the old forum archives, from maybe a month ago. Juice

Does anybody here have the first Larry Blackmon LP on the PROFILE label and under the name EAST COAST (no not the RSO East Coast LOL)? The front of the gatefold cover shows a very young Larry with another well known future star, Gwen Guthrie, and the rest of the band (including Gregory Johnson who would follow Larry in Cameo) All the music is composed by Larry and Gwen, and although it has not much to do with the Cameo style it has it's moments! Not solo stuff... it's a band called EAST COAST and it must be (from the top of my head) from 1974... The music is hard to describe though... kind of a mix between, rythm'n blues, little tid bits of funk and soul-jazz... that doesn't help (LOL) but it's really difficult to explain without a listen... I like it though... Wonder B |

What's up Wonder? The only thing LP that I know of regarding East Coast was released in 1979. Is the song The Rock on that LP? If so, it should be a 1979 release. Peace Juice |

Juice the EAST COAST LP you are mentioning is the one on RSO (check my initial post) and that band is NOT the same band and has nothing to do with Larry.... The one I am mentioning is a pre-Cardiac Arrest album and if you had this album you would see there is absolutely no doubt about it as Larry must be 18 or something and his faces is full of pimples LOOOOOOOOOL and Gwen Guthrie looks so young too... plus it is much much rarer than the RSO album of the other group... What's up Wonder? I have to say that I've never heard or seen that LP. It is definitely rare & no one that I know seems to know about it. I would love to see & hear that one. I don't even remember it being mentioned in the Cameo profile of any of my funk books. I'll double check it though. |

I know Juice... that's why I mentioned it because I know it is rare... on that label (anything on that one is hard to find) you have other great records by Seldon Powell, Sir Edward and more... I was really excited when I found that EAST COAST LP some 20 years ago because I had never read anything about it and Larry himself never mentions this group in his interviews... CAMEO is always said to have started as the NY City Players... Well all I can say si that there are two future Cameo members (Larry & Gregory) in this group. By the way I got all confused (never trust your memory! LOL), and the label is NOT Profile but ENCOUNTER... Sorry for leading everybody in the wrong direction... All the album covers on that label were gatefold and all had grey covers with a round picture of the artist or the group in the middle... Pretty easy to spot when you're browing full speed in the bins... LOL Wonder B (Message edited by Wonder B on April 11, 2004) |

Wonder, I checked my Funk book by Dave Thompson & Rickey Vincents book as well. There is no mention of East Coast. Most info about East Coast speaks only of the 1979 LP which had no picture on the cover. I'll check out my Gwen Guthrie info as well. Is it possible that this label somehow got their hands on unreleased tapes, or compiled music by different groups? Just thinking about the absence of any info or mrntion of this LP makes me a bit suspicious of its origin. I'll try to see what I can dig up. What other groups have releases on the Encounter label? Maybe we can piece this labels origin & practices from that. Peace Juice |

Juice look at my post above to see a couple of other names on this label... Also you don't have to be suspicious about that LP because I have it, and I am telling you that it is rare and genuine and not a compilation nor a bootleg of any sort... I had Larry sign it when he was here the last time on tour with Cameo and boy did he look surprised to see that one... he just couldn't believe it and called all the other band members (backstage) to come and take a look at it... LOL He told me he didn't even own a copy of it ands that he hadn't seen it in a loooooong while... Books don't tell everything unfortunately LOL And the 1979 East Coast (which I bought without hearing, thinking it may have a relation with the band we're talking about) is a crappy record LOL In fact there is even a copy up for sale at the moment on GEMM... go to http://db3.gemm.com/c/search.p l?sid=366757789&key=48256&curr ency=US&field=LABEL&wild=encou nter And copies of the Seldon Powell and Sir Edward too... both albums which I also have... Encounter was a jazz label which issued a few albums in the same vein as Prestige & Blue Note in the early 70's... Bernard Purdie is holding the drums on several albums like on the Seldon Powell... I got a mail from Tomi Jenkins about a month ago saying that he was putting the final touch to his second solo album, and that Larry had also finished his own... they will be shopping for record deals... Funny to think that Larry is doing a solo album when Cameo is his thang, and that he pretty much does what he wants with the group... Wonder B |

tsaneladi you may be right, but this kind of plan is generally used by younger artists, not someone whose name will be forever associated with CAMEO the band... I think it's a bit late to start a solo career after over 30 years in the business... LOL Then again I won't complain at all... I just need some fresh sounds from this artist!!! Wonder B |

Hi Wonder B, I remember this lp you are speaking of. I remember seeing the lp bout 2-3X's. The first time was in the 70's, I guess when it was first released. The second time was in an lp bin at a Community Store when they we're going out of business, and was on sale for $1. Wonder B, you are the only one who manages to pull alot of the pass outta the hat, when other's forget to think or mention about. Thanks for bringing this bit of lost and forgotten info. Your right on time. I remember the artists that Larry Blackmon produced and his productions weren't lame nor self indulgent. Very decent R&B/Funk tunes he's done. I agree that Cashflow was another decent and fonky group indeed. I thought that solo lp was a Cameo lp with just his face on it. I admit it did sounded sloppy. I did hear it before. "Hey B, wasn't the earlier carnation of Cameo was called the New York City Players once and their keyboardist at the time was The Late Gwen Gutherie". I was a big admirer of hers also. The last cut I remember before her passing was "The Sparkle In Your Eyes". I do miss her. I would rank her among the top diva of the late 70's through the early 90's. |

Thanks for the kind words Don... Yes indeed, after EAST COAST, the first name of the new Larry B led band was the New York City Players, although I don't know if Gwen was still part of that group... I really discovered her at the time she issued 'It Should Have Been You' in the early 80's... that song was brilliant and from then on I bought her new stuff and looked at what she had done before... Too bad she left this world so young... A truly talented artist. By the way my favourite Larry B prod has to be that MANTRA LP on Chocolate City... I loved 'Action' and the even better funk track 'Doin' It To The Bone'... that one had a bad bass line... Wonder B |

I was trying to help a kid as far as trying to get him in the biz, and trying to get him to do demos and recordings. Trying to turn him on and to lead him in the right direction, to people I knew? That didn't work out. Anyway, he used to wear my nerves on Cameo's "Why Have I Lost You" and "Cameosis, Zapp & Roger, and The Brothers Johnson sh--, that led me to be turned off. I mean l like these records but when the kid started it just turned me off is all I'm saying. So B, don't want you to think I was dissin' Louis bass playing is for what my reasons may have been. |

What's up Wonder? Hey bro, I have to disagree with you regarding the ballads. Maybe you meant that they didn't release many ballads as singles. Here's an LP by LP list of their ballads, most of them are quality ballads. I used to play many at mthe skating rink that I DJed at. Here we go: Cardiac Arrest(1977) - Stay By My Side & Smile We All Know Who We Are (1977) - It's Over, We All Know Who We Are & Why Have I Lost You Ugly Ego(1978) - Give Love A Chance & Friend To Me Secret Omen(1979) - Sparkle Cameosis(1980) - I Care For You, Why Have I Lost You & We're Goin' Out Tonight Feel Me(1980) - Feel Me & Better Days Knights Of The Soundtable(1981) - I Never Knew & I'll Always Stay Alligator Woman(1982) - For You & Secrets Of Life She's Strange(1984) - Hangin' Downtown & Love You Anyway Single Life(1985) - I'll Never Look For Love (fea Barbara Mitchell of High Inergy), A Goodbye & I've Got Your Image Word Up(1986) - Don't Be Lonely Real Men Wear Black(1990) - Time, Fire & Space & Just A Broken Heart Most of these were definitely quality ballads & I played most to excellent response. For those interested, this is how to contact them, only if you want to book them:http://www.delafont.com/music_ acts/cameo.htm I'm already a bit leery, as they claim that A Bambaataa sampled I Just Want To Be on "Jazzy Sensation" when my copy of that song sampled "Funky Sensation" by Gwen McCrae. Aside to Lady M: The singer is question is Wayne Cooper. Wayne sang those high falsetto parts. His last appearance with Cameo was on the Cameosis LP in 1980. He died of AIDS, I don't have the exact date of his death, but I find it amazing that the fellas never mention him & I never saw a memorial to him on any of their later LPs. Juice

Wonder B, Now i hear the kid I was trying to help is wearing his folks nerves thin again, now he's wearing out Slave. He had potential. I was trying to with his original songs and style, and I guess he was spoofed and looney tune. And then I'm shocked to hear groups & bands from Chicago like Smoke City, Magnum Force, Jessie's Gang and First Choice playing stuff that he and I only knew. The kids family's been visiting the neighborhood and tells me they've hidden his bass permanetly and has him thinking he got wasted and misplaced it! I know, I know, I know, even their nerves can't take it either and wants him to play something new & original. |

Hi Juicefree20, Out of all the artist from Roger Troutman, Atlantic Star, Midnight Star, Prince, Teena Marie amd Slick Rick. I know Cameo has been constant and unrelenting and has been thru and gave all musical forms a run for their money. From big band, to quartet, to trio, with no horn section to having horn section. And is still performing together. One thing I got to say is "Where is their Rhythm 'N Blues Foundation and Rock'N Roll Hall Of Fame Awards! |

Hi Don! Unfortunately, it seems that most of the voters are a bit prejudiced regarding post 60-70s music. Many of these folks are of the opinion that good music ceased being created after the 60s. Look how long it took a group as great as The Dells to be included. These folks are easily 20 years behind the curve. Funk from the 70s & 80s, I don't believe that those folks have a clue!! I sure wish that I had a copy of that LP that Wonder B was talking about. I've never seen it. I was checking a bio of Gwen Guthrie in one of my Billboard R&B books. They never mentioned that LP there either. Someone must be mighty embarassed about that LP for so many participants to have never mentioned it! Peace Juice |

What's up Wonder B? What you say is true & that's a shame. I was the kind of person who would play both sides of my 45s & all of the cuts on my LPs in search of the songs that no one was playing. When I became a DJ, this practice continued. As a result, my crowds got to hear songs that they weren't going to hear anywhere else. I appreciate you posting that cover, it's got to be interesting.
