Over my 30 years or so of collecting many records it never ceases to amaze me the amount of detroit related 45's that have appeared over those years.
45'S recorded in detroit etc but appeared on different labels etc from other cities or whatever.

Mel-I believe the Eddie Daye record was a Washington D.C. record. Jo Ann Garrett on Duo was a Chicago record. Bamboo was a St. Louis label. ZTSC was the code for pressing in The Columbia Terre Haute, Indiana pressing plant, which serviced mainly Detroit and a much smaller percentage of Chicago (and a few other midwestern cities). I believe the mix was about 82% Detroit, 15% Chicago, and 3% other Midwest (St. Louis, Des Moines, Milwaukee, Toledo, Akron). Geno Washington, spelt with "E" was the US soldier stationed in Germany. The Gino Washington from Detroit was spelt with "I". The Ambassadors on Atlantic were a Philadelphia group. Did they sing a song by Detroit writers?
Eddie Wilson was part of the L.A. Jobete (Motown) group, headed by Hal davis and Marc Gordon. I was told that even the tracks were recorded in L.A. (But, of course, it has the Motown connection). Geraldine Hunt's records were recorded in Chicago-but do have the Detroit connection, with Mike Hanks writing and/or producing.

Cheers Robb
I thought the geraldine hunt was done the same time as her bombay recordings?
The Philly Ambassadors as mentioned who cut for Arctic as far as I am aware cut recordings in detroit.

Your correct in your answers but as far as I know so am I regards a detroit connection being involved somewhere down the line be it by a detroit writer/producer/singer or studio or Label or whatever.

Regards the G/Washington probably a typo.

The Eddie Day
am not sure if this is the same Eddie Daye as you mention with an 'E' at the end of name.As the Eddie Daye and the 4 bars.

This is an old 45 from years ago on the scene and have asked regards the name and label but to no avail.

Anyway
still say there all connected to detroit someway or another.

I didn't know that the Ambassadors recorded Arctic records or Atlantic records in Detroit. I do remember them singing at least one, possibly two Motown (Jobete) songs on that label. If they recorded in Detroit, I'd be curious to know who produced the sessions, and who was the arranger and what session players were used, and which studio. Perhaps someone can provide that information.

Yes, you are certainly correct, Mel-those records did have some connection with Detroit. You are also correct that Geraldine Hunt's Bombay recordings were made no more than several months apart from her Katron recordings. Both sessions were co-productions of Bob Catron and Mike Hanks. Hanks probably ran the sessions. The Bombays were probably mid to late 1962, and the Katron probably late 1962 or very early 1963. Also, many of the labels listed above were the original Detroit labels.

Robb,

The Lollipops on Atlantic seem to be a UK group
unrelated to the group on Impact/VIP or any of the other groups called the Lollipops.

Sean Taylor on Magic Touch is a Milwaukee artist
- probably recorded in Chicago

Bernie Hayes on Volt is from Chicago

Eddie Wilson on Tollie is Motown writer/producer
Frank Wilson.

The Ambassadors recorded some songs at Golden World with the "moonlighting" Funk Bros on hand.
The Volcanos also recorded Ladies man and others there as well.
Same with some Kenny Gamble's Do it baby.

Thanks Davie. I'd been told that Eddie Wilson was Frank Wilson before, but it's nice to get confirmation, as the sound of his voice was similar to Franks, but I wasn't 100% certain.

I assume then, that the Ambassadors' Detroit recordings were on Arctic, and NOT Atlantic? Is that correct?

Hi Robb, the Ambassadors' Detroit tracks are on
Atlantic. From memory their first two Atlantic singles were recorded in Philly (from Johnny Styles' production company) - the third was recorded in Detroit. The group signed to Arctic
after the Atlantic deal expired. It looks as if
all their Arctic material was recorded in Philly
with Arctic's owner Jimmy Bishop in the producer's
chair.

Hey Mel! I've never heard 99% of the songs that you mentioned above. Are there any compilations that feature these songs? It would be great to hear some of these songs when trying to decide what is worthy of purchase.

Mel:
The Dynamic Walton Brothers Melvin (drums), James, Jr. (lead guitar), Clarence (rhythm guitar) and Myron (bass) - were a Detroit-based combo that was discovered by the legendary Johnnie Mae Matthews.

"Automatic Sissy" was released on her Big Hit label.

There was a Detroit group called the Ambassadors that were with Johnnie Mae. They had a 45 on her Bon label - a great double sider it is too - "Power of Love" b/w "I Wonder Why." The label credits the lead singer as Ida Brenett and the disc was re-released on Johnnie Mae's Reel label.
The group also had a 45 on the JR label which was arranged by Dale Warren: "It's a Lonely Town."
If you look at the Johnnie Mae story here on soulfuldetroit you'll see a photo of this group.

Hi Mel
The Pyramids' 45 on Cub was previously released on the Detroit based Sonbert label. The group also had a disc on the Chicago based Vee Jay label around the same time.

Regards my statement
saying that BB Records is a detroit label
is because........

also on BB Records is a 45 by the Soulset group.
titled
'Mickeys funkey monkey'
which is credited to Holland/Dozier/Holland.

anything to add davie or Robb.
I am probably mixed up as these are all old and forgotten about until I dig into my boxes etc.

cheers anyway

Sorry Mel, I DID read the Eddie Day as "Eddie Daye". Another group singing a Jobete song is no more likely to be from Detroit than any other city, but I seem to remember B.B. records being from Detroit (but not completely sure). So, you may well be correct that the Eddie Day is from Detroit.

Hi Mel,

I'm pretty sure the BB label is not from Detroit.

This is speculation but I've a feeling that it
was set up, maybe in Philadelphia, soon after
Swan went bankrupt. BB was probably named for
Swan owner Bernie Binnick.

Detroit group The Buena Vistas had a single released on BB (they'd also been on Swan) - the
other releases may well have been masters picked up from independent producers. My computer at home's out of action so I can't access my data base but from memory the Buena Vistas is the only
Detroit-related release on the label.
