For people who collect records in Australia, Japan, Italy, Canada etc: What terms do they use for soul music ??? For instance in England, they use the terms Northern Soul and Modern Soul. Can anyone on SD give me a hollar on this subject? Thank You |

Well you don't mention France LOL, but over here it's just Soul, and although we have taken on lately on the term 'Northern Soul' because of all the great compilations that have come out in the UK, we still have (except for the people deep into it) trouble defining the exact definiion... At first people believed that 'northern' was defining the part of the US the music was coming from until people found out that it was just a UK movement that had it's roots in the 60's Detroit/Chicago sound... Don't worry Mike, we know we are not on the same par with UK soul fans... They are definitely the biggest and most faithful soul afficionados... I just wish we had a live scene as active as theirs, we'd be able to see much more concerts... Instead of that I have to cross the Channel quite often to catch my favourite acts and it raises the bill in great proportions LOL Wonder B (Message edited by Wonder B on April 10, 2004) |

Yes, Mike, as said Wonder B, everybody knows that the biggest Soul collectors live in England, and in France, hlas, we feel a little lonely, Wonder will confirm this. But we are very proud of our beautiful EP's, and of our rugby team, this year ! :o) |

You got that right Phil... LOL We beat the World Champions and that was no small feat and won the Grand Slam by doing so...! LOL But musicwise, soul fans are in much smaller numbers on our side of the channel compared to the hords of British collectors... They have a long history to back it up and thier Blues & Soul mag was the only way for us to know about the whole scene from the late 60's to the 90's... Now it has gone too mainstream for me (too many new artists I loathe! LOL) but hopefulle some other publications took it a step further, like In The Basement or Togetherness... Those mags are absolutely fantastic and nowhere in the world can you get info and in-depth articles on those artists... Wonder B |

Hey Phil & Wonder B, As far as I'm concern, you guys (no matter what part of the world you're from), continue to keep the music alive by giving your great support and love, in which I think it's a wonderful thing ! My good friend Tony Drake was featured in, "In The Basement", in 2000 and he was so kind enough to give me a copy to have. I read some wonderful stories on a lot forgotten R&B artists that was once upon a time, big over here in the U.S. I just wish that it would sell over here. It's so sad. Thanks again fellas ! Take care, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com Let's all of us continue to keep the soul alive ! |

Mike I loved your insight and posts on Soul Patrol a couple of years ago and it is just the same here on SD!!! About ITB and Togetherness, anybody can subscribe to those great mags, although it is true that the shipping rate may be a little high between the UK & the US... Wonder B |

Thanks for the kind words, Wonder B. I too enjoy reading your insights on music as well. I think I will start subscribing to some of those great overseas magazines. Take care, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

Hi Mike, "In The Basement" is an excellent magazine for lovers of "real soul". I live in Sweden and get it by subscription-see details below. Editor-in-chief David Cole is a most dependable and likeable guy, and if you're interested, I'm sure he'll help you to get available back issues as well...the mag started sometime in 1996, if I remember correctly. http://www.btinternet.com/~int hebasement/ Take care, Eva |

What about: Deep Soul, Sweet Soul, Popcorn, Boogie, Cross-Over, Carib-Soul. ..oh we do like to pigeon-hole things...all nice and neat, like records on a shelf...in alpha/numeric order of label, naturally! lol :-) |

Hello Everyone. Flynny has brought up something that has intrigued me for the last few years ... the term "Popcorn" .. which I believe is used to describe the sort of Soul music played at certain events in Belgium. But what is it? .. could anyone give me some examples of the sort of playlist I could expect to hear at a "Popcorn" gig? Thanks Roger |

Hi Roger, As a DJ.. I get sent all sorts...Billy Butler's Chicago stuff has been sent to me as Popcorn...but also Alma Cogan/ Petula Clark(both pop UK singers of the 50's)--which is no way SOUL! As someone said.. all these headings...Soul is Soul.. why categorise it? I can accept Deep, Sweet, Southern..which is giving pointers to the type of Soul..etc..but other headings cover a dance type! Some Northern Soul is purely a beat..with the voice really not soulful...Motown is also classed as Northern Soul...does it all sound confusing?..yes..just let's call it Soul Music..and leave all the other stuff in their wrappers. |

Northern Soul is not a sound it is a scene that involves dancing, record collecting, magazines, internet sites, travelling and last but not least and more often than not soul records. It has been the biggest underground music scene in the UK for more than thirty years. It's equivalent amongst today's young people is Happy hardcore/ rave music. And do not ask me to explain what that is because it has nothing to do with soul. |
