I have not discovered much about this release on JVB in the archives.
I do know that Joe operated out of the back of his record shop on Hastings street and may have had some connections with John Lee Hooker.
Can anyone provide more detail on the JVB label or The Twilighters ?

Joe Von Battle ran his JVB Records from 1948-the late 1950s (1957 or 1958?). He also had a subsidiary in the late '50s (Von Records). He closed up operations from about 1951-1952. He recorded such artists as: Blues artists, The Count, Calvin Frazier, Boogie Woogie Red, Eddie Burns, Baby Boy Warren; R&B groups, such as The Del-Rhythmettes, Gales, Twilighters, single R&B artists such as Little Sonny. The All Stars (of Jr. Walker) even recorded for his Von label. I believe John Lee Hooker may have recorded for him, (but possibly listed under another name?). The Twilighters of the '50s may have had several personnel changes before becoming the late '50s/early '60s group which included Tony Ewing, Donald Richards, Othea George, George Washington (not Gino), and a I think, Duke Browner?. They also recorded for Spin Records (The precurser of Chex).

Is there a way to Search the Archives? I'd like to see the post Mel wrote.

I keep using the search feature but it will only search the "new" forum of this week. When I go to archive pages there's no search attached to it that I can tell. Maybe I'm missing something, please help,

Thanks

peace, beauty, Marsha

Robb, I'm extremely dubious about the All Stars
on JVB having anything to do with Junior Walker's
group.

Do you have any info. that definitely links them ?

I had been told that some of the members from the original All Stars group were also with Junior Walker, and that that's where the name came from. But, the person who told me that was only a fellow collector, who may have heard that only as a rumour that was going round. I never read an article saying so, nor heard it from an "official source".

Re:JVB,Gone,VON and Viceroy

I have discovered that the book, "A History of jazz in Detroit before Motown" Authors:Bjorn/Gallert, Has a reference to JVB,Gone,VON and Viceroy on page 173.
To paraphrase:
Von Battle recorded such acts as Johnny Basset and the Blue Notes, Kenny Burell, George "saxman" Benson, the Four Sharps, Ted Sheely and the Reverend C.L. Franklin.
Joe's record shop was in the way of the I-75 freeway construction project that decimated Hastings street in the late 50's and he subsequently relocated to 12th. Street.
Acts were sometimes covertly recorded and Joe released the singles without the performers' knowledge! Some sides by Johnny Basset were leased to Deluxe in Cincinatti. VON sides were released through the 1960's

Thanks to Jim G. for this info., buy his book from Amazon at:
http://www.amazon.com
ISBN #:0472067656

Cheers !!

Thanks for the nice thoughts, Leo.
Actually much of the info came from Mike Rowe in England, a fine researcher/writer and author of "Chicago Breakdown".

I love "Water-Water"! Erma Franklin and her little sister, Aretha also recorded for JVB. Aretha in '56(JVB 47) and Erma in '53(JVB 23) with her high school girlfriends as The Cleo-Patrettes(I've got that one!). I own a handful of JVBs. I'm trying to be the first kid on my block to collect 'em all but I'll settle for a complete discography. Anybody know how to obtain one?

Joe Von Battle's daughter was on the forum some time ago.

She is in the process of writing a book about her Father and hopefully we may obtain a discography through that.

Robb, Junior Walker's group became the All Stars
around '61 - their Harvey singles are credited to
"Jr. Walker All Stars" , no "and the", then became
"Jr. Walker and The All Stars" when they transferred to Motown's Soul label in '64.

The All Stars on Von was issued at some time in the fifties - I can't access by database to get
a year - I'm convinced that they're unrelated.

The booklet for the two-cd compilation of their
singles that Motown issued in the early nineties has pretty detailed booklet notes based on interviews with Junior which cover his early history. There's no mention of any recordings prior to the group signing with Harvey and no mention of any of the members ever recording
with anyone other than Junior.

I don't mean to nitpick but thought it better to
clarify things - these "factoids" take on a life
of their own if they're not corrected quickly.

Thanks Davie. The Von record was issued in the late 1950s. I believe, 1958 or 1959. If Jr. Walker started his group in 1961, and none of his group came from the previous old ALL Stars, then he didn't take the group name from the old All Stars. Rumours often start from collectors' logical "guessing".

I spoke to one of the Twilighters a few years ago - Tony Ewing. He never mentioned Duke Browner being a member, but Gabriel Garrett (sp) was.

Thanks, Graham. By the way, do you know if there was any connection between The All Stars on Von and Jr. Walker's All Stars? Any common members? A familial connection? Had Jr. Walker simply liked their music, and adopted the name?

the B side is the same except for part 2 in the title. and I too doubt this is Jr. Walker or connected with "his" All Stars

Thanks for the scan, Ron. As stated above, I heard from a fellow collector many years ago that some of the members were in both groups. I broke my own rule of not couching my statements properly with "I've been told that....". It's hard now to remember what "facts" I've "learned" from fellow collectors (which could come from rumours) and what I've read from reliable sources. Some of that misinformation I even read in PRINT, in fanzines. Anyway, thanks for helping clear this up.

Hi Ron
Is 2-2-5 refering to a car engine size?
Spyder Turner had a song on Fortune with a similar songtitle, about riding up Woodward in his two twenty-five.

I think 2-25 was a Buick deuce and a Quarter, a popular phase back then..a well known dealer found a 25 count box of the Von record in Detroit about 20 years ago and started saying there was a Motown connection because then all the Motown collectors would pay a good price for it, but I don't think nobody knows for sure except the "All Stars" themselves, now that record dates 60/61 because Joe did not move off of hastings until early 1960, and of course Jr. Walker cut his first record in 1962 so it is posiable he may have picked up the/or some of the All Stars for his back-up band, but I still doubt it..well anyway I think that's all I know about this record

The Buick Electra 225, one of the ultimate "pimpmobiles", as we used to call them. A great song by Spyder Turner that Nathaniel Mayer does live now. He just recorded a new cd for Fat Possum and I think "225" is on it. The record should be out in July, if I recall correctly.

A 225, or "Deuce-And-A-Quarter," is definitely a Buick Electra 225. It was so named because of the original length of the car from bumper to bumper: 18 feet, 9 inches (or 225 inches), if I remember correctly. It was introduced in 1959 as the top-of-the-line Buick (replacing the Roadmaster/Limited nameplate) and was produced in various styles into the 1980s. They were considered nearly as luxurious as a Cadillac (but at a somewhat lower price, of course). Peak years for the 225 were probably from about '62 to '72 or so.

"Ride In My 225," originally recorded by Spyder Turner on Fortune Records, was written by Nathaniel Mayer. And yes, a new version should be on Nathaniel's new CD, out this summer on the Fat Possum label.

Monster? Naah. That was just considered a full-size car back in the day. Anything smaller was called a mid-size or a compact.

How times have changed.

Those things were fun to drive!
