Unfortunately I am old which makes me old enough to remember "blue light basement parties" but they were very fun. No fights, no weapons, (unfortunately, that is not the same for today's kids in clubs and homes)just a very humid/hot basement with a blue light and dancing. Do you remember them?

Blue Magic, Stylistics, Independents, Chi-Lites, etc. I remember my last "blue light night" as it had Ready for the World, Morris Day and the Times, Isley/Jasper/Isley, Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, etc.

Those were fun nights!

Im not too young to remember those great, hot and steamy blue light parties doing that slow grind.

But of course, I only watched from the sidelines!

Hey Bobby, Don here. If you wanna talk about a blue light party to set the mood it's Teddy's "Baby Get Ready (For Love)", the long LP version. Bobby I'd step and bop the heck outta that song. You MSFB/Sal Soul fellas kicked azz on that track, especially the guitar riffs and licks rhythmicly. Hot Damn!

Satipe. That is showing your age.

It depends on who you hand out with. If you want certain people to come to your parties they will. If you don't want certain ones to come, they won't.

Most of the clubs today clear people to make sure they don't have weapons. Fist fighting? Yes, but hardly any weapons. In fact, I have never been to a club where a weapon was used even once.

But I do understand what you are saying. If we want to change this type of society we live in, we must ALL do it.

TAKE BACK THE STREETS!

hi this is Kev-Lo and yes Satipe those basement blue light party's were great I remember when my brother took me to some of party's and man they were smoking and your right the young generation today don't know about those great times.I don't know where you are from but here in New York during the late 60's and early 70's it was nothing but blue light party's.Back then you could ask any woman to slow dance with you with no hesitation,But today if you ask a woman to slow dance with you and they will think you are crazy unless you have a mate with you but It's just too bad those days are gone forever.

well, i'm late on this thread, but in my day, the light bulb was red, or an article of clothing tossed over the lamp but still a great training ground for social skills.

Johneflat,

If I may expound upon your post....sometimes people weren't really careful about what they threw over those lamps either. Now I've never seen a garment catch on fire, but my boy Stanley was pissed that someone burned a hole in his black "silk" tee shirt by throwing it over a lamp. Does anyone else remember the "silk" underwear craze, which was a precursor to today's pants around the ankle style?

I also remember the hard plastic lamps used to give the party that red/blue light glow when a colored bulb wasn't available.

I remember a few fights that broke out at these parties, usually sparked by jealousy of some kind. However, more damage was done to the surrounding furniture than to the combatants or onlookers. Remember Cooley High. "Don't touch my break front"

I also remember "paling up" with whomever was dj'ing at the time ("damn man, u keeping this party going")so that a) he would play whatever my fave dance song was at the time and b) so he would clue me before he played one of them SERIOUS slow jams like "Stay In My Corner", so that I could position myself, if u know what I mean.

Ramble young man, ramble. And while we're on the subject of slow dances check this out. It's one thing to walk across the room to someone who's dancing so hard in their chair that the legs are about to unscrew, only to be told, "sorry I don't want to dance." It's another whole level down, to see the girl you came to party with, dancing with someone else. You go over to cut in....and she says, more or less, sorry it ain't happening. The guy always looks at the guy she's dancing with like, "See you outside in a few". I've only been on the "guy she's dancing with side" of this situation, and I'm glad in those situations that I came wit me boys.

Destruction, I think you and I are from the same era, because you're describing the gear and furniture to a tee, yo - no doubt!(smile!)

You are also describing late-70's "attitude" as I remember it, as well... Kev-Lo, I aint nevah stepped to no sista I didn't know, and asked her to slow dance, grind-me-up... Damn, son, you got COjones!(smile!) I remember in the days of the Hustle, and Le Freak, by Chic, that we'd touch the sista, and depending on her mood, you'd better watch out she didn't slap yo ass a new face(smile!) No thanks, I always preferred to use a lil finesse!(smile!)

As for fighting and gunplay...hey, I guess my generation brought that nonsense to another level, to be sure... I witnessed a few throwdowns back then, though not serious, as Destruction described... What I most remembered of those get-togethers back then was you had to keep awareness on the coat check if you had a fly leather, or something... Sometimes cats got "confused", and walked off with your leather("Yo, bus' it, I'm out!") - whether they came in one or not... Chalk that up to lil brown bags, and whatnot - I guess(smile!) It just COULDN'T have been a Crooklyn kinda thang...

But, hell yes, aint nothin' like a swingin' sweaty, fonky houseparty, where can't nobody move except toward the dance floor... I've got a lot of pictures of those beautiful, sweaty nights, and they all bring a smile to my face when I look at them... When ya gittin' OLD all you've got are your memories, eh???(smile!)

PEACE!~
ZEKE

Blue Light was ok, alright, but that Red Light (baby~baby~baby) was HOT and it brought out the romance...all the Luv stuff came out when the Red light was on...(smile)

Zeke,

da COAT CHECK!!! Another forgotten bit of Party lore. You're right on it. Fortunately(or un) for me, I rarely attended affairs with the latest "party" gear. Mom liked spending the bucks in Jr. high on trad. gear and I didn't have that high fashion sense in high school to go that route...but I knew tons of folk that did. As a matter of fact, some of my friends aware of my situation would let me wear their seconds once they upgraded, which were still, years ahead of what I had.

I remember guys hiding their leathers under couch cushions, on the DJ's chair (where's he going). Funny, but at least in my hood, guys knew that I had a rep for not stealing, no matter what the cirucms, so if I wasn't dancing, I had coat watch (and sometimes girl watch) duty.

As for brown bags, the only thing our crew carried in brown bags was either Richards Wild Irish Rose or Thunderbird or Colt 45.

While on the fashion tip, who remembers "Sizzlers" from around 68-70?

And man, don't get me started on Le Freak. DAMN. We lived in wondrous times.
