I had been reading and hearing for years that Valerie Simpson had recorded songs on the "Easy" LP with Marvin Gaye. As I loaded the songs into my mp3 player, to my amazement the songs I thought Tammi was singing was actually Valerie Simpson. Valerie's name was on ALL the songs except three on lp. I have always liked Valerie since "Killer Joe" and think she is an incredible vocalist as well as songwriter and she will always be one of my favorite female vocalists.

caliluv, you learn something new everyday, huh! Yes this is true, I learned of this myself almost 20yrs ago. I have a Motown book that I purchased at the time, which contained this information. The book is put up somewhere and I need to find it. When I read this, I got my father's album just so that I could listen with a different ear. It is amazing that their voices are alike! It is unfortunate that Tammi was too sick to complete the sessions, but it was good that Valarie was able to step in. |

Yes, Valerie sounded so much like Tammi that it was eerie. It's amazing that they were able to pull it off without anyone finding out. Perhaps those songs should have an asterisk next to them. Charise...hit me at juicefree@hotmail.com. |

I'm thinking that Valerie is singing duet with Marvin on "What you Gave Me" also. I remember when Valerie took over the co-lead, I didn't question that it was Tammi (even though it was in the papers that she had been very sick), I just thought that her voice changed somewhat due to the illness...I guess it was my own denial about just how sick she was. So sad. John |

Yeah I thought that was eerie also! They sounded so much alike, but after discovering that you can tell the difference somewhat. |

Caliluv, I'm curious as to what you meant by you've always liked V. Simpson since "Killer Joe". The only song I know of by that title was recorded by the Rocky Fellers on Scepter Records in 1963. Val and Nick were writers at Scepter, but had no involvement with that record.

It has also been mentioned on the Motown Message Board more than once that Valerie's voice may have been used in parts of "You're All I Need To Get By" to "fill out" portions of Tammi's vocal. Most likely, certain vocal parts needed to be redone at a time when Tammi was not able at to do so herself.

Hey Randy.. I think Caliluv may have been referring to her work with Quincy Jones, beginning with Killer Joe. Handsome |

Valerie Simpson and Syreeta Wright also finished and sweetened many Diana Ross cuts during the diva's years at Motown. |

Well, you can definately hear Val singing the chorus with MG & TT in "You're All I Need To Get By." She is in the right channel of the stereo version. I noticed this years ago. |

Was "Killer Joe" by Quincy Jones the same song the Rocky Fellers recorded? |

Uptight, I think Valerie is actually the one harmonizing with Marvin on the choruses of YAINTGB. You can hear that same, slightly overdone "pinchy - nasal" imitation that Valerie does on "Good Lovin' Ain't Easy To Come By." Tammi, I think is on most of the two verses. |

Hi Randy! Killer Joe by Quincy Jones is a different song. Quincy's is a mid-tempo Jazz Instrumental with a bit of a swing to it. Juice |

I remember thinking back to the archives and a lot of folk didn't appreciate Val's vox on the United lp? Funny how times change that I thought about it. I knew Q's version and another redition of "Killer Joe" was done by Oscar Brown,Jr. I liked both, I don't have an favorite with the two, pitting one against the other. |

motownboy: So you're talking about lead vocals? I, too, thought Valerie's imitation on the "Easy" LP was "pinchy/nasal." That's a funny description, but accurate. I would have thought YAINTGB was recorded a little earlier, prior to Tammi's symptoms for Valerie to be needing to "fill in" for Terrell in a session. Listening to it now, I see what you mean. Wow! |
