Greetings All, I hear 'ya - stone love - and for the main reason - that it really was a TRIBUTE to Berry Gordy - and he was all up in the house. Without his vision................... That in itself was enough for me. Everyone else - to include the producers - did the best they could under the circumstances - it appeared. We can knock the producers - and that is fine if that is what some want to do. But - how many of us thought this show was going to be all that in the first place? Not I. Because - when I realized that there would be no tributes - film clips - messages from those that were there - I knew then - that this show would not be the sugar in my cup of tea. Lionel even mentioned the fact that this show would be about the Music of Motown - and nothing else. That is just not my cup of tea, indeed. I loved Motown 25. And.......w/o the singers that have passed on, and w/o the ones that are still here - and some even that were in the audience - what did we all expect? Nothing stays the same. My favorite moment though - was when Gladys sang. My God! I'm like you SS - I cried. And how about Bubba? LOL! I also cried at the end when I saw Valerie & Nick take to the stage. What those two contributed to Motown is priceless. Motown would not have been the same without their input and talents. I cried for the ones that are no longer with us. I cried for Berry Gordy and how much he gave me by having such an impact in my life. I cried for Martha - and Diana - and Eddie & Paul - and all the ones that I personally claim as my homies. I cried for Tammi and Marvin - and for how much they gave me and the world. I cried because at that time - those times were the best of times. I cried because - I miss those days and times. I cried as I thanked God for having given me such wonderful memories. I loved seeing all of the ones affiliated with Motown. And for all my griping about Justin Timberlake - I would have also preferred a Motowner up there w/Lionel - and not Cedric. I loved Jermaine Jackson. I almost cried w/how well he sang - and how well he represented his brothers. I loved it when he told Berry - that he loved him. And last but not least - I missed Stevie - Michael - Martha & Diana. I know in my heart - and can we all not imagine - how well Diana - for instance - would have covered her OWN leads? She would have blown the place up - and she would have had all the FLAIR that may haps went along w/it and was missing. All four of the above would have done their thing singing their own tunes. I thank them all for their efforts, and even the newbies. And I was pleased as punch that thru all of it - Berry Gordy was the MAN truly being honored. It might not have been plain to see - but he was, indeed. And - his parents and siblings, and all those that contributed to Motown's success were thus so. "THERE WAS A TIME" "EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE" "THE WAY WE WERE" (Message edited by gogogirl on May 18, 2004) |

The show "could have been all that" when you have the best band in the land "Funk Brothers" with the original singers and pay respect to the real artist not people who had nothing to do with the Motown Record Corp. |

All, Oh - I forgot. Of course - the groups missing the Originals, never have nor will they ever sound exactly the same. For years - Motown - hasn't been - "The Same old Song." I'm sure most of us know - that Motown of old is no more. This new Motown - is "Motown Today." What I missed - and I'm sure many of us did - were the good old days. Nothing more or less. But we have been missing them years - and for how long to be exact - about twenty-odd years? I didn't expect it to be like "Motown 25", for real. But - I know what some mean about the fact - that they should have included all the acts that are still here - and there is no question. Maybe in another five years - but then again perhaps - some more of our loved ones - will be MIA or gone. And lastly and sadly - some artists lose the control they once had over their vocal chords. I'd rather remember and thank them for what they gave and offered up in their primetime - and when their primetime was "The Right Time." Nothing lasts forever. "FOREVER" - THAT'S HOW LONG I'M GONNA LOVE THEM. "FOREVER CAME THE DAY" IS NO MORE.

Put Valerie's dress in that dumpster too. Better yet, if Mrs. Powell had been backstage, Valerie wouldn't have made it onstage unless she fought her way out. |

Hi this is Kev-Lo well me personally I don't think it was such a great show I'm sorry to say but nothing and I mean nothing takes the place of the motown that I grew up on.First of all I did enjoy seeing Smokey Robinson,Glady's Knight and the Funk Brothers, but than that I did'nt really care for the show.I also thought that Lionel Richie should have song with the Commodores. |

On the positive side, Valerie Simpson is a beautiful woman, she looks great for her age. But that dress did her no favors. Gladys has a more womanly figure than she used to, but she dressed in such a way that you didn't focus on any flaws. She looked great. |

I'll tell you what dress aside, Valerie looked terrific. Gladys has always had that earthy "girl next door" look that appealed to me. They're definitely not getting older, they're timeless! |

Gladys was fantastic, Jermaine still has his chops, and Michael McDonald is still Michael McDonald (always dug his stuff)...otherwise fuhgeddaboudit ! Why wasn't this a DePasse production ? I know she has her detractors...but I'm sure she could have put together a better production. And damn...wasn't the choreography pathetic ?? (Reminded me of the Laugh-In party dancers !) |

1. Smokey Robinson and Josh were ok 2. I think the new lead singer of the 4 Tops can sing decently. 3. It made many realize what star quality Diana Ross has and why she made it. 4. Its over. It truly was so dreadful. The reviews are horrid. 5. It was nice to see Mary and Cindy together but the singing was awful and they didn't look any better than they sang. |

Loved the special. I especially enjoyed Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong and Kelly Rowland. They were great together as a first time grouping. Mary was her usual gorgeous self. I always enjoy Smokey and Gladys Knight was flawless. God Bless both the Tempts and the Tops for keep on keeping on. Thelma Houston is amazing. I never understood why someone is not recording her more. Jermaine represented the Jackson's well. I was happy to see Berry Gordy happy. He deserves the accolades. Lionel Ritchie should have done one number with the Commodores, but I loved both acts performances. That new singer from American Idol impressed me with her warmth and stage prescence most of all. Overall, it was an enjoyable program. |

Listening to your comments made me wonder. Motown music have now become American standards, and that in itself is a tremendous achievement for Berry Gordy and all the Motown people. Since there is no way everything can be as it was in the past, perhaps we should think how best this music can be shared by all Americans for all time. All artists will be singing these songs, much like "The Star Spangled Banner." Do you like to see "The Star Spangled Banner" sung just one way, or do you prefer each artist to individualize it or something in between. The producers of Motown 45 tried to do just that. How can Motown best be represented in the future? Motown 45 represented the transition period as people sought to see how best to handle the music for all people for all time. The past cannot be brought back. But the greatness of the music and musicians can go into the future. What are your recommendation for doing this? |
