Hi this is Kev-Lo you know years ago a 45 record cost just 69 cents and 79 cents and LP's were anywhere from 2 dollars to 4 dollars, but today if you buy a 45 record especially from the 50's,60's and 70's you will pay from 15 to 30 dollars ,but never the less I for one don't mine buying a 45 record for 15 dollars especially if It's a record the that I don't have and want to have in my collection. In fact a few years ago I brought a 1971 classic soul record called That's The Way It Is by a group called Love.I paid 15 dollars for it and it was worth getting for that amount.so tell me something SD's if there's a 45 record or a LP that you don't have and want to buy it would you be willing to pay a lot of money for it.

Hi Kev Lo: What up, my mellow my man...lol...

I have often said to keep a reord collection up these days you need another job to support your habit, or apply for food stamps and P.A. after you finish shopping! I just spent 20 dollars on a vinyl I know is not in cd, the highest I will go is 75 dollars, but it has got to be in MINT condition.

I'm thinking about buying the Osmium album by Parliament. The original, not the reissue. It usually costs $100+ on eBay.

Normally I wouldn't pay more than $30 for a 45. But sometimes that rule needs to be broken... :-)

I will buy it, if I really really liked it...but if I just want to hear it, I usually have someone tape it for me, then if Ilike it a lot, I will buy it. Plus, I like reading the credits.

I have no hesitation about buying anything whatever the cost.

Show me something by the Velvelettes I dont have and my first thought is to fix up an appointment with my bank manager for a bank loan.

Lars...I feel for you with Osmium....I bet you could kick yourself for not getting it 30 years ago!!

Lars, if all the music on "Osmium" is easily available on CD I really don't understand why
you've got to have the original pressing.

This is coming from somebody who used to have a
mint original copy that he picked up in a sale
in Virgin Records for 0.25 - but that was in
1972 :-) Some b*******D burgled my house and I
lost most of my vinyl record collection - I no
longer care about original pressings - as long as
I can listen to the stuff I'm happy.

The stuff I haven't been able to replace is another story.

Well, it depends on the condition of the record. However there are exceptions. Like for the 1st Black Ivory album, I am still trying to get it (KevGo, I will be emailing you!) but, merchants want anywhere from $60 to $1,000!! Yes, you have read right! That is an expection right there to me! :-)

I'm pretty much in agreement with Dave.

I strictly collect the music (not the original pressings, vinyl editions, or 1st printings).....I'm really a music collector, not a record collector...and there's a big difference.

I'm generally old fashioned, but I've always preferred the CD format to vinyl......IMO, it's a better sound, more convenient listening and more readily available for collecting. I sold my turntable years ago.....so if it's not on disc, it does me little good.

I do miss the old LP cover art, but if a CD re-issue recreates the original cover art in a reasonable fashion, I'm pretty satisfied with that. I like the liner note booklets that come with CDs as well.

That said, CDs are way overpriced and it's really slowed down my collecting over the past two or three years. I used to order CDs constantly, but I just can't afford to do that any longer.

I'm willing to pay 30 or even 40 bucks for an import on a rare occasion, if it's a favorite album of mine and I want it badly enough. I did that for the Isley's "Live It Up" LP and Minnie Riperton's "Perfect Angel."

That's hard to say. I'm not a stickler for originals. If I can get the same sound on a re-issue, that's perfectly acceptable to me. I want the music & liner notes, it doesn't have to be the original.

Case in point: Linda Jones 1st song was Lonely Teardrops, which she recorded as Linda Lane in 1963 on the Cub label. Now, I'd like to have the 45 to complete my Linda Jones catalog. The problem is, I've never heard the song & it costs $85. This song is next to impossible to find & though it's rare, that's a hell of a risk to take on an unheard song. Unfortunately, rare doesn't mean good & that's my dilemna.

Echo echo,

It's the music for me. Most of the music I have was purchased second hand and a lot of it is not in the best condition. But if I can hear what I want, when I want, I'm happy.

Davie, I can understand how you feel. They broke into my home and stole a lot of valuables that were left by my 98 year old Gramma..plus a lot of other personal stuff that I can't even buy boot legged or any other way. It's just G O N E.

Davie, I'm collecting all the original pressings from the Invictus, Hot Wax and Music Merchant labels. Most of them are reasonably priced but there are a couple of albums that costs more than $50.

There's something special about vinyl that cd's just can't match. :-)

Juice, there is a soundclip of the Linda Lane 45 here:

Lars, I'm just like you, I collect original pressings, and I rarely buy cd's, the liners are too difficult to read. Be patient, on ebay, prices may vary a lot. That week, you can win an LP at $ 50.00, and next month, the same record may sell for more than $ 100.00 ! All you have to do is wait, if you don't want to get the record at any price. One day or another, you'll see it again, and if you're lucky, you'll get it ! Also, it depends on who is bidding, beginners are more "enthusiasts", and don't hesitate to spend mucho $$$. It depends also on the date of the auction ending. Many times I couldn't win an LP, because I was not awake at 4 a.m !
John Lester, I suppose you're from England ? I've read the Manship thread, and for me, it's just another world ! I love the Velvelettes, too, BTW, do you have their elusive French EP ? I'm still searching this one ...

Lars, I understand. I suppose it's just that having once owned nearly everything on Invictus /
Hot Wax on original pressings it was just too
soul-destroying to start again so I settled for
the CDs which have the advantage of good sleeve notes and additional tracks - and I don't have to worry so much about the CDs getting scratchy.

Good luck in finding "Osmium" at an affordable price :-)

LARS!!!! THANKS FOR THE LINK!!!!! You just helped me to solve my problem! Although the beginning of her signature style shows & I wuld like to complete my Linda Jones collection, I guess that this will remain lost to me forever. As I said, rare doesn't mean good & though it's rare, when comparing the quality to the price, this is an overrated piece. I would be willing to pay $10-$20 for it & that would only be to complete my collection. It certainly wouldn't be for the quality. I can only wish for this to end up on a CD someday.

Thank you Lars, I appreciate your help.

Juice
