MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS (Lois & Delphine) have ===WON=== the choice of the Soulful Detroit Form as the classic Motown artist that most SDF Boarders want to see and are most anxious to see on the "45th Anniversary of Motown" Show. When I informed Diva Reeves of this significant, public interest barometer WIN, she stated how pleased and proud she is of the honor. After all, she lives where? Dee-troit! In an afterthought, she queried, "Even ahead of SMOKEY"? I gladly replied: "Way ahead of Smokey". By the way, the runner-up is THE FOUR TOPS!

In the conversation about "M-45", Miss Martha stated matter of factly -- she is a "Can I Get A Witness?" -- that one artist actually on the show "cannot sing anymore". In fact, "....couldn't sing .... way out of a bathroom!" [I removed a/the pronoun .... his/her/their.]

U know, Shawn, U are all rite on this one! If I had heard that title for Diva REEVES in the past, perhaps many years ago, it must have eluded me: the "Queen of the Motown Sound". Ain't it the truth!

MARTHA & THE VANDELLAS actually started the "Sound of Motown" in early 1963 with their beautiful, melodic, catchy and story-telling "Come And Get These Memories". That was the beginning of "The Motown Sound", as even BERRY GORDY, Jr. has acknowledged.

Then, in 1964, MARVIN GAYE wrote it and M.R.V. served it up, "The Motown Anthem" forever: "Dancing In The Street". That is the reason that "Motown 25" (1983) opened with that fabulous, memorable, well-orchestrated, loaded with Gay boyz and galz dancers, big opening production number of, none other than: "Dancing In The Street". Thank someone playin' with a full deck that for "M-45" we will all be seeing M.R.V. perform "DITS" tmo eve.

Sister Dee-troit, ironic that U wrote. Very ESP. Like "S.W." -- no, not StoneWall, but STEVIE WONDER -- "I'm Wondering" where U were? I have some more 411 since my call from MI to NY.

For all of U in the soulful City of Detroit and surrounding 'burbs:

Miss MARTHA REEVES will be on your local television tomorrow morning, Monday, May 17 -- of course, on ABC-TV, just like "M-45"! I know that Diva Reeves will be interviewed re: M-45 and the history of Motown. They will be showing M.R.V. film clips from the Motown Golden Decade (1963-1973). I also believe that U all will get the heads-up on the rest of America with a t.v. clip or two from the M-45 t.v. show!!!

The name of the show is, we believe, "Good Morning, Detroit" -- in addition to as in "Good Morning, America", also as in "Good Morning, Viet Nam", which ironically had the M.R.V. song, "Nowhere To Run". Want more 411? Okay! The show comes on @ 8 a.m. The anchor or host is Eric Smith. I trust U all in Detroit know of him. They are very excited about having Miss MARTHA on their show! They will covering M-45 the next morning, too. It's all perfect timing. I don't know if THE VANDELLAS, lovely LOIS and Flo-ish DELPHINE, will be on this a.m. I/V show. "Neither one of us", believe it or not, even mentioned them. Scatterered throughout the great, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional phone get-together, we were having too much fun in snips and bits dishing another group!

Please let others know about this show with M.R.V. such as your friends, family members, neighbors, associates and even enemies. They will ALL be glad that U did. After this "GMD" a.m. show, hello, Lowell and Sister Detroit and other SDF-ers, when U get chance, we'll look for the 411 from U all in the big "D" to post on this M.R.V. file. My guess is that they will show a clip of M.R.V. performing "DITS" on M-45 as a teaser for everyone to tune in Monday eve @ 8. As M.R.V. said when I mentioned that wish, she said, "That would be nice".

P.S. - Sis, your request: de-message will be de-livered de-sooner de-better tonite b/4 midnite.

Motown 45 was on in Canada tonite............lots of songs by the newer artists. A very short Supremes segment at the beginning; Cindy was pretty pretty weak. And Martha and the Vandellas got cut right out of the show. The finale.......well, they only show Ashford and Simpson, Michael MacDonald and Gladys, Smokey and Josh, Lionel and Cedric and then the others come on in the background. It was entertaining, but no Motown 25!

So, Sis Dee, when U see her next, just ask her: which one of Wendall's sisters are U? Also, M.R. says hi to her whichever one! Plus, M.R. asked me to thank U for passing that message on to her via me. Enjoy the a.m. show and the big p.m. show!

'Motown 45,' airing Monday on ABC

(KRT)

Come and get these Motor City musical memories.

Jimmy Mack, when are you comin' back? Don't know about Jimmy. But Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, who cranked out a magical string of 1960s hits that included Heat Wave, Dancing in the Street and Jimmy Mack, are comin' back to help spread the mythic Detroit soul vibration again as part of Motown 45.

It's the latest splashy television celebration of the unforgettable Motown sound, which has happily been in regular rotation on that radio in my brain since I first heard Barrett Strong wail Money into my teengenerate ears in 1959 and Smokey and the Miracles shout out Shop Around in 1960.

Please, Mr. Postman, look and see, is there a May sweeps TV special just for me? Actually, ABC probably hopes Motown 45 captures a bit larger audience than one middle-aged, mojo-crazy TV critic when it spins out the sounds of funky founding father Berry Gordy's astonishing Detroit hit machine at 8 p.m. EDT Monday on the Alphabet Net.

The two-hour concert special hosted by Lionel Richie and Cedric the Entertainer was taped April 4 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Unlike past Motown anniversary specials, this is not a history lesson of the company, but more of a celebration of the songs, says executive producer John F. Hamlin. Instead, a constantly rotating pattern of live performances from multiple stages will ensure that the music virtually never stops.

As the hits keep on rolling, the memorable lineup of singers will include Motown greats like the Temptations, the Four Tops and former Supremes Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong along with Martha and the Vandellas.

The Funk Brothers, that gifted collection of aging musicians who served as the legendary Motown band in historic Studio A at Hitsville USA, also will share the spotlight along with newer Motown artists like India.Arie and Brian McKnight.

But an eclectic younger generation of non-Motown performers, such as Macy Gray, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland and British soul wonderteen Joss Stone, serve up their interpretations of old Motown songs. And the hits include everything from I Heard it Through the Grapevine to Second That Emotion to Signed, Sealed and Delivered.

Needless to say, Michael Jackson currently entangled in major legal trouble over child molestation charges will not be moonwalking across the stage at Motown 45. Yo, Cedric! You're a dancing machine. Entertain us with a superfine Cedric moonwalk on the wild side.

Last night, when my dear friend, the magnanimous STONEWALL (aka "Stoney Luv") made our dishy and very Motown-ish conversation a three-way by calling Diva Reeves and adding her to the mix, I told her "Now Miss Martha, I won't keep you long because I know that divas need their beauty sleep, so I just want to wish you good luck for your early morning television appearance". Imagine how tickled I was to hear her say "Alright, Bless You! Thank you, oh, and you know that song should've hit #1, right?" A voice that is so near and dear to me, live and in-person, and it sho weren't no Memorex, y'all! I feel truly Blessed now!

Yes, its true.......they cut Martha and the Vandellas. I don't know if Boyz II Men were supposed to be on but they weren't that I can recall. The Commodores sang Nightshift. The Temptations were not strong at all. The 4 Tops were really really good. Very impressive. The new lead singer is strong. Too many new faces screwing up old Motown songs. Gerald Levert was weak on Do you Love Me. The poorest singing was Cedric the Entertainer and I think Kelly Locke singing It Takes Two. Kelly Rowland and The Supremes were not good. Kelly was scared I think; even for Endless Love. She seemed at one point to miss words. And Cindy was not in good voice. Mary sang better than Cindy but the whole Supremes thing was brief and was the first act, probably because it was weak. It was a shame to see these new performers get way more time than old Motown people. As one review said: Diana was never missed more than last nite.

[This is a reproduction of the posting on "Countdown to 45" & Review!]

Topic: MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS =not= on "MOTOWN-45" Show!

No, Randy -- and, of course, bro #1, Tony -- and all other interested parties, neither producer (shamefully listed below), nor anyone on their staffs, had not even the common courtesy or the basic decency -- especially to popular soulful music icons, inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, among other musical recognitions -- to contact the classic Motown legends MARTHA REEVES =or= THE VANDELLAS (they're humans, too) to inform them that -- like Boys II Men -- they were inexplicably, rudely and unjustifiably 'edited out' of the actual M-45 show! It surely was not because of their praised performance from the actual Motown event (4/4/4). Their appearance is AAA-1, too, especially with those appropriate and classy goldish-toned, shimmering dresses that they wore. M.R.V. was in great form in all ways -- including energetic and lively.

When a member in Canada posted the previous late night (after 1 o'clock in the morning) that he didn't see M.R.V. or B-II-M on the C.B.C. version of "M-45", hardly anyone read that possible evil omen, and for anyone who did, they figured that he just "missed" a part of the show (how would we know?) =or= that it was the Canadian version, perhaps, more t.v. commercials, less time for the show or whatever. It was absolutely unimaginable and unthinkable that M.R.V. could not be on the show! That knowledge, even if verified, would not have helped ease the blow anyway. Martha had to be at the Detroit t.v. studio at 7 a.m. and, in fact, she was going to sleep when Bless U and I got off the phone with the diva on Sunday nite at about 11 p.m. But these producers sure knew they had cut M.R.V. out! ABC-tv surely knew. The production staffs deliberately and recklessly withheld this 411 yet continued to promote M.R.V. as being on the show, as so many on this Board have confirmed. One of our members even posted above, the morning of May 17 (while I was sound asleep), yet another news article confirming yesterday that Martha Reeves & The Vandellas are on the show. When I read that at noon yesterday, when I woke up,I thought to myself, "Whew!"

Martha Reeves and The Vandellas only found out about this musical travesty and undisputable disgrace yesterday morning, May 17th, the very day of the "M-45" t.v. special. Believe it or not, it was more by happenstance through the local media, in-person grapevine. It was also in an unworthy and embarrassing manner after Diva REEVES was at the local ABC-TV studios in Detroit, ironically, for a Motown interview regarding "M-45". The local papers even ran a headline story: "Jimmy Mack, when are U coming back?" As many of U know, I thoughtfully posted this 411 here to inform SDF-ers in the Detroit area so that our local D-members might have the opportunity to see that a.m. show. Many did! (Yes, I rec'd your e-mails of appreciation and enjoyment of the "Good Morning, Detroit" show.)

Although that show displayed some clips of the M-45 show, Miss MARTHA curiously asked them after her interview segments why they didn't include a clip of their performance, "Dancing In The Street", on "M-45"? That's when they sadly revealed to her that, surprisingly and unfortunately, M.R.V. was not on the promotional show tape that they received! Everyone was perplexed. After all, MARTHA went way out of her way and flew to Los Angeles from England in the middle of a successful tour and LOIS and DELPHINE flew from Detroit to Los Angeles to do this "M-45" show. (They still have not received payment!) The television commercials for "M-45", as recently as yesterday and right up until showtime, were displaying Martha Reeves in the t.v. ads! Of course, Martha saw them. For two, we'd call that false and misleading advertising!

I shall not go into details now, however, besides the humiliation and the insult and the depravation to the viewers of more real Motown, M.R.V. regretfully had to cancel a big party that was going to held in their honor at the previously "quiet-as-it-is-kept" location, the famed Roostertail in Detroit. U all recall, M.R.V. did their "live" Motown album which was recorded there! The very special party was to celebrate M.R.V.'s appearance on the big "M-45". U can't "celebrate" when U are cut-out.

Ironically, I was informed and shocked by this when Martha disappointedly yet thoughtfully and personally called me midday from MI to NY. She phoned to relate, as she said, "...some bad news to report", so that I, and others, would not be shocked by seeing the "M-45" show and not seeing them. When we got off the phone, I immediately called the offices of both production offices -- plus Motown Records (innocent this time). All of this oddly happened in the middle of a moment having just received a concerned and assuring e-mail message from SDF's Lowell, of dealing with an internet sniper attacking me on this board the night before, whom I complained about. Some people's agenda is to not be entertaining and/or informative but to be mean! That seemingly can happen anywhere, as I was reminded of -- twice -- yesterday.

Someone (or probably ones) is responsible for being foolish and mean to all three of the talented and lovely ladies ***M.R.V.*** -- and their endless friends, families, colleagues and fans!!! As U all must know, Martha really luvs all of her fans. I, of course, cancelled my announced M-45 dinner party out of respect to M.R.V. I let her know that. Needless to say, but I will anyway, I reached out to Miss M last eve a few times to be comforting and encouraging after the full frontal assault blow she wrongly endured. Quite frankly, she handled it much better and calmer than me and the "N.Y.C. Palz of M.R.V." I agree with 95% on this S.D.F. board who rightfully panned that "M-45" show. It was only 50%, at best.

Remember, the SDF-ers -- to our great and combined credit -- chose "MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS" as our #1 classic Motown artist that we were most anxious to see on M-45. (THE FOUR TOPS were the runner-up.) Martha was gratefully pleased when I told her of that non-stop win throughout the "Countdown to M-45". She really appreciates that, everyone. Instead, millions of people -- endless amounts of younger people (30 and under) for the very first time -- were deprived of seeing and enjoying M.R.V. but instead saw non-singer CEDRIC rolled out once again and to allegedly "sang" and yet a second!! appearance (two too many, IMO) in the show of KIMBERLY Something, an "American Idol" loser, to team up for a really bad duo, "It Takes Two". In fact, I now know (as I'm sure U do, too) that is the point when many people literally could not take it any longer and turned off their televisions. That is also the point where everyone was supposedly to see M.R.V. That aforementioned duo disaster was senselessly =instead of= seeing a Motown legend, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, authentically and excitingly performing the MARVIN GAYE-penned, international #1, much-covered, everlastingly popular Motown anthem: "Dancing In The Street".

Besides expressing your disappointed feelings on this S.D.F. board -- do that, too, of course -- U could, actually, instead of just venting, DO something by calling and/or faxing the two "MOTOWN 45" producers in Los Angeles:

JEFF M. MARGOLIS
JOHN F. HAMLIN

Web: www.JeffMargolisProductions.co m
Tel: (310) 235-1030
E-m: reception@JeffMargolisProducti ons.net
Fax: (310) 235-1032

Let 'em hear it!

Disappointedly,

SW = Stonewall!

Note: Unrelated to "M-45" and/or the M.R.V. situation, to answer your "?", this is my self-decided only post at this time. (No TMI here.)

FYI, some more 411 has been added to the single-release songs of MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS:

There is somewhat of an explanation concerning the cutting of Martha and the Vandellas on Motown 45 in todays Detroit Free Press. If this is true, they didn't review the sound until it was too late??? http://www.freep.com/entertain ment/namesandfaces/names20_200 40520.htm

At least some smoke is finally clearing. "M-45", no doubt, realized too late that they had sound difficulties on M.R.V.'s "live" recording performance of "Dancing In The Street", filmed on April 4th at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. That gave them one-and-a-half long months to do something such as re-record, if necessary. It could have been done elsewhere at a totally different place in front of a different audience. They could have appropriately done it in Detroit! Rent a hall, the people pour in for free, film the performance for that song, and as a special treat, M.R.V. gladly do another 10 songs for the audience. Last time I saw them just several months ago, the Motown anthem girlz did an energetic and ovationed 22 songs!

M.R.V.'s millions of fans around the world do not appreciate the fact that M-45 did not show MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS yet we, as being informed now, of course, appreciate their not being unfairly portrayed due to technical difficulties. However, as I outlined above, the show's producers cudda/shudda done something a la THE TEMPTATIONS. (They did not perform before the audience on 4/4 yet were on the show.) And, the undisputable, carved-in-a-stonewall fact remains that Diva Reeves and the V's were not confronted with this shocking news until after they appeared on the local ABC-TV morning show in Detroit on Monday morning, the day of "M-45". In fact, with that show's cast, et al., they all watched the entire "M-45" tape in disbelief that regarding M.R.V. on the show, to quote a classic 1972 M.R.V. song, "No One There"!

The Detroit Free Press is on the right track investigating this outrage and insult to their local stars for over four decades, MARTHA REEVES & THE VANDELLAS. Because of all the calls, letters, e-mails, faxes, etc. that they received, an inquiry is in order! We hope that the D.F.P. and whoever else, such as the Motown Alumni Association, are continuing their investigations. All the SDF-ers and your friends and associates, please keep up the "Heat Wave".
