You ever had a song that just makes you smile or laugh? I call them 'Parody' songs...where the lyrics are made to tell a story but also make you feel good laughing while you dance or tap your foot to it. Here are a few that I have heard and liked over the years: One Eye Open - Mask Men and the Agents Here Comes the Judge - Pigmeat Markham Skinny Legs and All/Papa Was Too - Joe Tex Tramp - Otis/Carla Love Man - Otis Redding Wait Until Tomorrow - Jimi Hendrix My Ding A Ling - Chuck Berry No No No - Ringo Starr The Funny Farm - I forgot who made this... Shut-uppa Your Face - forgot who here too... Super Fly Meets Shaft Your turn SDF...

Hi again Soulful Friends! Hi, dear DyvaNaye! Good thread and a chance for smilin' a little after some very bad news! I can enumerate many spanish and catalonian funny songs that are kown only in Spain. About soul music, i understand the lyrics if i have it write in the sleeve or the book (in the CD's case). If not, i can understand some things and some songs made me laughin' because this lyrics and / or some "gutural" or instrumental sounds. These are some examples: -The intro of "Beatiful 7" - Osibisa (sounds of the jungle and very visceral chants) -"Troglodyte" - Jimmy Castor (dementially funny) -"Berta But Boogie" - Jimmy Castor (simply deliciously fool) -"Backdoor Man" - Richard Tee (got a laughin in the intro veri contagious!) -"Funky dream" - George Duke (many sound effects that resulting very funnys) -"Nursery Rhymes" - People's Choice (many "gutural" sounds very funnys!) -"My Feets Won't Move But My Shoes Did The Boogie" - People's Choice (the voice of Frank Brunson in the last part it's similar to a dog!) -"Fish Bite" - Ramsey Lewis (lyrics and the synthesizer sound) -"Spider Man" - Ramsey Lewis (lyrics and the synthesizer sound also) -"El Rey de la puntualidad" - Fania All-Stars (the chorus says that the singer come too late at the show. He replies that are the others who comes sooner! -"Spaced Cowboy" - Sly & The Family Stone (the Tirol-style chants is very funny!) -"Bump No More (Whit A Big Fat Woman)" - Joe Tex -"Super Duper Super Man" - Bunny Sigler (deliciously fool psychedelic funk) -"Jingle Bells" - Bunny Sigler (deliciously fool psychedelic funk also) -"Walkin' The Dog" - Rufus Thomas (the intro is very surrealist!) I've always been partial to Blowfly! His Blowfly Disco & Oldies But Goodies LPs were hilarious. A little risque, but, hilarious none the less. Cheech & Chong were funny as well. I must add Bill Cosby's hilarious LPs: Bill Cosby Is Not Himself These Days (featured Yes, Yes, Yes) & his Disco Bill LP from 1978. That LP featured a song named 1,2,3 & was hilarious! Joe Tex & Rufus Thomas are always wonderfully funny as well. I have to include some of Millie acksons' Live re-interpretations of songs as well. |

Eli: 2 Live Jews....LOL. Forgot about that one...but I must mention The Beastie Boys with 'Brass Monkey'. I have to say I did like that song. Manny: El Rey de la Puntualidad - A NY Latin Classic!...at least in my old neighborhood in the Bronx, NY. Also, I love FANIA any way...most of FANIA's music focused on lifes funny indescretions....lol... Also Manny, HOW COULD I FORGET JIMMY CASTOR!!! Another NY classic person! What I loved by him was: 'Hey Leroy!' (this is my brothers name, he took a beating on this as we grew up...lol...) 'Trogylodite' - 'come here...woman...woman...' ...reminds me some of some of the Neanderthals I have gone out with in the past...lol... 'King Kong' - 'Kamasambe! King Kong!' And Jimmy Castor art work on his album were priceless...the scrutiny a Black Woman had to go through ...lol... I have to add Kool and the Gang to this list- 'Jungle Boogie' - 'uh...get it...feel the funk ya'll...let it get low...'- I cant help but smile when Im jamming this song... Also Bill Cosby...'Yes Yes Yes' is a classic even Barry White had to laugh at...to funny...also by Bill Cosby his James Brown spoof 'I Love myself, Better than I Love Myself' - words: 'Yeeeeeoooow! Good gawd! They hit me on the Bad Foot....with the bunion and corn, good gawd I feel it...'LOL!!! Bill Cosby needs prayer!....lol... |

Hello everyone. There was a parody of the big hit "Rumors" by TIMEX SOCIAL CLUB, it was called "Roaches" .. I can't remember who it was credited to, Somebody and the Critters? The lyrics went .. "How do Roaches Get Started, they're started by the dirty people". I used to have a copy, but the joke wore thin after two or three plays. Roger |

There used to be a Jewish "Borscht Belt" type comedian in the '50's named Mickey Katz, who recorded Yiddish parodies of a lot of the hits of the day. For instance, 'Kiss of Fire" would become "Kiss of Meyer" Stuff for the katskill crowd. His son is Broadway performer, Joel Grey. |

Plenty of funny has been listed already...there was one song that made me stop the car (actually is was a rusted out 2 tone blue 1976 Dodge Window Van). ELVIS IS EVERYWHERE by Skid Roper & Mojo Nixon The hysterically funny effect only lasts for one listen though. I guess most comedy is based on the element of surprise. |

Hello again everyone. Do any of you folks in the States remember a song called "The Funky Gibbon" by a group called THE GOODIES. It made the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974/75. The song was intended to be a parody of those RUFUS THOMAS hits .. "Funky Chicken", "Funky Bird" etc. But the received wisdom in the U.K. is that 99% of those U.S. record buyers who purchased it were unaware of this, and just thought it was another groovy funky work-out. THE GOODIES were actually three British comedians TIM BROOKE-TAYLOR, GRAEME GARDEN and BILL ODDIE, who had made their name as part of a BBC radio comedy review show called "I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again". I.S.I.R.T.A. also included JOHN CLEESE ( later of "Monty Python", "Fawlty Towers" and "Fish Called Wanda" fame ). I believe that "Funky Gibbon" was originally performed in this radio show. The threesome then went on to produce their own BBC T.V. show called "The Goodies" in which they played a trio of "seekers of truth and justice" who were constantly being caught up in humorous situations, and the '45 was released under this name. It became a big U.K. hit and a surprise U.S. chart entry. Roger |

Hello again, soulful brothers & sisters! Hey, DyvaNaye, I celebrates that you likes also Fania (if you understand the lyrics, is very metaphorical as in "Memba Color"). Casually in the country of my mother, Murcia, the second name Pacheco (as Johnny Pacheco's founder of the Fania label) is very usual (she have various cousins with this second name). I likes also another good tune by Jimmy Castor called Potential that i have in a compilation by various artists and in the book of the CD appears reproduced in little size the cover of the album "Butt Of Course" where Jimmy (dressed as Superman!!) dance with a "Neandenthal" woman in a funny underground draw style ala Robert Crumb! Also many time ago i left to my brother (among others) the album E-Man Boogie where Jimmy sang a song called some similar to "Superlove" in a falseto register very funny. Also have a Thom Bell-Linda Creed's song with a Jimmy's falsetto very impressionant (ala Phillip Bailey!). I forget previously to mention a funky-funny tune that make me laugh many times: George Duke's I AM FOR REAL (the screaming in the intro is very "Neandenthal"!!) Peace & Soul Food |

I liked Weird Al Yankovic's parodies EAT IT and FAT (parodying Michael Jackson's BEAT IT and BAD.) Around the same time, Weird Al's EAT IT came out, I caught Millie Jackson in concert. She opened with her own parody of EAT IT. Of course, it was much more explicit than anything Weird Al did. |

Allan Sherman had great success on Warner Brothers Records putting a Yiddish twist on his parodies of old songs. He also did "Crazy Downtown" in 1965. |

Hey Chancellor - You went there with Mel Brooks...that song was the 'bomb', and a good dance groove. What I have to add is Richard Fields - RIP- 'She's Got Papers' and the answer 'She Got the Papers and I Got the Man' and 'Another Man Is Beating My Time'...they were parody in the sense of 'ghetto dialog'...lol....THe thing that always got me was that I believe it was Bettye Wright who made the 'Another Man ' song and RF was a gay man...did she make that about 'him', so to speak? |
