I know we did what songs make you cry, but what movies bring a tear to your eye...movies where you know every word...every utterance..every move...maybe even every cuss word (naughty naughty.. ) Guys..you too...I knwo you shed a tear with the doors closed... I've seen you cry over "Old Yeller". Mine are: Selena...very sad...but very good!! I can watch it over and over! I never heard of Selena until she died....and Jennifer Lopez looked just like her! It's a Titanic type of movie where you knwo how its going to end. Excellent movie Fried Green Tomotoes...Great movie but unbelievable at times. Come on...a black man in the 30's down south...being found not guilty? They would have hung him form the highest tree. Despite that...great movie. Lady Sings the Blues...another sad "Titanic" type movie. Malcom x..Denzel was GREAT!!!! I forgot I was watching Denzel...I felt like I was watching Malcolm. Another sad one though. Steel Magnolias....One minute I was laughing next minute bawling! To sir with love The Color Purple

I don't necessarily bawl, but I do get a bit choked up when Mahalia Jackson is singing TROUBLES OF THIS WORLD during the funeral of Annie in IMITATION OF LIFE. I also love the finale of the film SAY AMEN SOMEBODY. Throughout the film, Willie Mae Ford Smith is seen using a walker to get around. At the finale, she sings her last song, and then sort of trots from one end of the church to the other without help. That scene always gets me as well. |

I steer clear of movies that will choke me up, such as Imitation of Life, Color Purple and I will not watch hospital shows.I want to see "The Passion of the Christ" but I'm also "afraid" to cause real life can be sad enough...I want my entertainment to be happy & light hearted although I feel an obligation as a Christian to see the Passion but I'll wait to rent the DVD. |

Fellow Male SD members: I will agree that a few of the movies mentioned would cause feelings of sadness but,!!!!!! It looks like you all just like 2 boxes of tissues "Chick Flicks" who woulda thunk it!!!! Where is Love Story, Wuthering Heights, Old Yella, any and all movies shown on the Life Time cable network and Brian's Song on your list. For me When Jimmy Brown gets killed in the Dirty Dozen chokes me up or the line from the Guns of Navarone "Why dont you throw him off the cliff and save a bullet" always brings a tear. Other favorites are when the Dukes buddy gets killed in Rio Lobo and the Duke has to go on a killin' rampage to quite his sorrow is an other tear jerker. The line "Give "Em Hell John" starts the tears a flowing for me!!! Finally, as Lt. Col. Kilgore cry's about the smell of napalm in the morning I can't control my self for days after that touching and moving performance... Agreed on Malcolm X. The scene where they start playing Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come" in the background is well done and by far and away Spike Lee's finest hour. That gets to me everytime. Agree with you Toni on "Passion of the Christ." I'm scared to see it, too. I'm going the DVD route, myself. Here's one: BRIAN'S SONG (The original). |

I cannot make a list, because I cry with anything! I remember -now I'm laughing, but it was a little embarassing in the theater- that when the couple finally meets in "Sleepless In Seattle" I burst into tears aloud! "The Sound of Music" always made me cry, even today, especially when Von Trapp melts and sings a duet with his daughter Liesl. Can't forget "All Mine To Give" , when Cameron Mitchell and poor Glynis Johns die and the little brothers are separated. And "Dancer In the Dark", when the poor blind mother is executed for killing the guy who stole the money she saved for her son's operation!!! That one was so sad, Bjork was very moving. Sometimes when the movie is beautiful, I also cry, as "The Piano." Or when justice or solidarity win, I cry, even in a horror movie like "Reign of Fire." I cannot think of one right now, but the best are those movies that bring tears to your eyes without music. Music in most movies is so obnoxious, they manipulate you. As for "The Passion of the Christ" it did not make me cry. I was mad I did not bring my umbrella to cover myself from all that fake blood! If you want gore and splatter, that's your movie. That's not my Christ, at least. Bad movie.

Couple of flicks..... "Field Of Dreams". The Terrance Mann speach about baseball fills my eyes every time. It's longer and more eloquent in the book ("Shoeless Joe"), but James Earl Jone's reading is so emotional.... And if you're ever in Dyersville, Iowa, go see the field. and "The Big Chill", along with John Sayles' "Return Of The Seacacus Seven". Both films are flashback powder to me, and have the tendency to tear me up inside. I recognise too many people in the characters. |

The Killing Fields.... when you hear Imagine by John Lennon.... and when you think that the guy who plays the lead Cambodian character was a doctor back then and had to live through the whole thing himself for real, only to finally be free and get to the US, where he shot that movie and then end up murdered in the street... talk about one sad life... just thinking about the destiny of this man makes the hair rise on my arms... DyvaNaye. It is quite emotional. But well worth it. At least you get to see what Jesus really went through without it being "Cleaned up" and sanitized. It really shows how HUMAN BEINGS can be so HATEFUL, yet others so LOVING. A great movie about contrasts of human nature. |

I saw a movie the other day called "The Word". A farmer has three sons: one of them studied theology, went nuts after reading Kierkegaard and believes he is Jesus Christ. The older one does not believe in anything and the younger one is about to marry the tailor's daughter, who heads a very rigid Christian sect and recriminates the old farmer of approaching religion with joy. The older son's wife (a wonderful woman called Inger) dies, and the one who believes he's Jesus, with the help of the faith of one of the woman's little daughters, brings Inger back to life. When that movie finished (it was made in 1955) I thought to myself (crying as I was), "This genial director Carl Th. Dreyer achieved what Mel 'Mad Max' Gibson tried but failed". "The Word" is really moving and proves the power of faith, the power of believing and the power of following Jesus' example. While Dreyer's movie is considered a masterpiece today, I sincerely doubt that Gibson's will ever achieve that status. I know everybody has a right to his/her opinion, but I feel very strongly about this movie, because I believe that in the end Gibson's "Passion" leaves the homework (the homework of doing the right thing) on Jesus' shoulders. Yes, he can come back and die again for us. Meanwhile, we can invade, kill, close our eyes in front of all the misery in the world that we, with our indeference, are also responsible for. This movie pulls us away from the spiritual path, with all its gore, its special effects, its non-sense, and its anti-Semitic, mysoginistic, homophobic and racist tones. Where is the impetuos Jesus that fought merchants, the rich and the self-righteous? (He is absent, not because this movie is about the "passion" -it has enought flashbacks to include some of this- but because this is the 2004 version of those religious movies that are extremely and falsely pious to be taken seriously.) At least, here in Panama, Easter passed and everybody has forgotten about "The Passion of the Christ" and are as wicked as usual. I believe that the problem with Gibson's movie (which is not "the truth" but an interpretation of suffering and torture... -a very relevant subject today, now that it's on all the media-, an interpretation that is so unbelievable and exaggerated, that belongs to the horror genre) is that it perpetuates the idea that Jesus' spiritual development was exclusive to him, that he saved us so that we can all go doing the same unrightful things, and that there is no need to follow his example (who wants to be tortured like that???). And yes, Mr. Gibson is back to what he does best and he is filming "Mad Max 4" right now. Sorry for all this. But I defend Jesus whenever I can. "The Passion According To Mad Max" did not make me cry at all (back to the thread.) |

Ironweed When Jack Nicholson come home to his family and reads the letter that his daughter had written to him 20 years ago when she was a child. Great movie and great scene. I also get emotional when I see the Tramp at the end of City Lights- when the blind girl who can now see recognizes Charlie Chaplin as the one who sacrificed his life to ensure that she could see. This scene is the highlight of all movie scenes. Field Of Dream does it to me too when Kevin Cosner finally realizes what "If You Build It He Will Come" means. When Kevin gets to play catch with his dad one more time -wow. |

Hi Medusa! I forgot all about Philadelphia. That movie was truly deep. Two other movies that come to mind: One Potato, Two Potato: This movie starred Bernie Hamilton & Barbara Barrie. It was about a mixed-race couple who had to battle the ex-wife's husband for custody of their daughter. The father (I think he was played by Richard Mulligan, later of soap)won custody & as he drove the child away, the camera cut to the girl screaming through the rear car window for her mother & th mother chasing the car down the road. I was around 3 or 4 when that movie came out, but I never forgot that ending. My Sweet Charlie: This movie starred Al Freeman Jr & Patti Duke. The scene where the cops shot Charlie, simply because they thought that he was trying to rape a white woman, was both infuriating & sad. As they watched her crying over him while he lay dying was a forceful moment. Pretty powerful stuff for a movie of the week! (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 18, 2004) |

Whenever my friends and I talk about "Titanic", I always think that there is no way a movie can represent the horror of that night, because film stock needs light to react. I don't know how long lights were on after the ship hit the iceberg, but after they went out, the tragedy happened in darkness. Imagine falling on water as cold as ice in complete darkness, having to move constantly, but swimming has little use because there is no shore to reach, and even if there is a shore, in what direction is it?, and if you reach a lifeboat and it's full... That's scary. |

Soulaholic, Thx for wearing the pants up in here. Let me add to your he-man list the following scene from True Grit. There's the Duke, staring at 10 or 20 bad guys acorss a field (not a meadow) when he shouts to the head baddie. "Why don't you and your boys put down your guns and come along peacefully" Which prompts head baddie to snap back, "That's bold talk for a one-eyed fat man." Duke then puts the reins in his mouth, and charges down the hill with both barrels blazing.... gimme the 3 of triple ply, Soul, I can't go on...sniff sniff. |

If we're gonna talk about the Duke, how about The Shootist, when The Duke gets shot, and Ron Howard picks up his gun and shoots the lowlife that killed his idol, then he throws the gun away as a dying Duke nods his head and fades off. Ron Howard, a child when he walked into that saloon, walks out a man, with his head high. Also Field of Dreams ("Hey Dad.....wanna have a catch?"). Gets me every time! Hey, I liked "THE WIZ", it had a real meaning and it taught something...and the Soundtrack was great... Maybe because I didn't compare it to "The Wizard Of Oz". I just took it as another movie about a very different wizard. I could relate. The Wizard Of Oz was made for kids and it's a good movie also...but I prefer The Wiz. |
