I just heard a great song by the Black Eyed Peas called "Where is the Love?" and as much as new music gets criticised here, it is a good message song. No artist will get close to Marvin asking "What's Going On?" but this is a nice song with a strong message. Message songs were popular at one time with Marvin Gaye (most of his What's Going On album), Freda Payne (Bring the Boys Home), Edwin Starr (War), Chi-Lites (There Will Never Be Any Peace Until God Sits at the Conference Table), etc. Now they get banned or do not fit into airplay which is sad as we get to listen to what (put rapper's name here) did to his ho, made his bling bling and can swear a few times. I may be old but something in my eyes seems wrong when a message song gets beaten by bling bling. |

Satipe: I hear you & understand completely. Music has almost always been a reflection of its time. Todays music is but a mere reflection of the ills of the world today. The primary difference is that our era dreamed of a better world, of a brighter day. We believed in hope & dreams that might come true. Today, they have no hope. They don't expect to be here long, so, they want as much as they can get, as quickly as they can. It's all about now, not tomorrow & it's reflected in everything that they say & do! |

Juicefree20: Your note says it all! I am a high school teacher who is trying to do the best for 'my kids' but I lose a few each weekend. I HATE weekends but know a few will mess up. I wish that more message songs would come out so that teachers can help. "Where is the Love?" by Black Eyed Peas is great! Their other songs about being retarded or shutting up are not good. So, we can choose what songs are helpful and leave out the others... |

The "m-e-s-s-a-g-e" songs are so interesting and memorable and so much intellectual fun, that I added (thanx for the "add-iting" feature) another baker's dozen of songs! Check out Dr. Stonewall's listing up above. Some will be sung on "M-45"!

hello again, soulful brothers & sisters! Many coincidences with many songs you all have mentioned as practically all by Curtis and Marvin in the seventies. In Spain, when the "message songs" was not longer in vogue, (in the 80's), a very good spanish group Golpes Bajos, resumed this situation with a song called Malos Tiempos Para La Lrica (Bad Times For The Lyricism. The most sad is this was in early 80's and the situation today is exactly the same. The seventies is the decade of the music with message (pop, folk, rock & roll, symphonic and experimental rock, funk and soul). Some (IMHO) masterpieces of soul with a message: -All the album "There's No Place Like America Today" - Curtis Mayfield -"Don't Call Me Brother" - O'Jays -"Ship Ahoy" - O'Jays -"When The World Is At Peace" - O'Jays -"Rich Get Richer" - O'Jays -"Give The People What They Want" - O'jays -"We Need Order" - Chi-Lites -"Let's Clean Up The Ghetto" - Philly Int. All-Stars -"Save The Children" - Gil Scott-Heron / Intruders -"You Can't Hide From Yourself" - Teddy Pendergrass -"Wake Up Everybody" - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes -"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now" - Gene McFadden & JOHN WHITEHEAD! (RIP) (I believe the lyrics are about the civil rights) -"To Be True Is To Be Who We Are" - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes -"Let'Em In" - Paul McCartney / Billy Paul -"Man Of War" / The Jacksons -"The Revolution Will Not Televised" - Gil Scott-Heron -"New day new Word Coming" - Billy Paul And many others Peace & Soul Food |

Why is it that the music labels used to love message songs but now shy away from them? Music is a positive way of expressing society's ills and it used to be acceptable but sadly not so much anymore. We need a new Marvin and Curtis as right now there is the rapper 50 Cent is is way short of the almighty dollar. I thank you all for your interest and responses to my note. |

Satipe, Kool & The Gang used to say, "Music Is Thwe Message", Gamble & Huff used to say, "There's A Message In The Music". Today, there's a message alright.... the message is money & whatever it takes to get it. |

A note to Juicefree You wrote, "They have no hope..." and I agree but also disagree. I am an inner city teacher and I know they want hope but do not know where to find it. I think it is up to us as adults to help. Thankfully, I have music and those who helped "pave the way" to speak with 'my kids'. A lot of famous names but it is people like you and me who can make the true difference. I hope you get to read this note my friend. |

Hi Satipe. I'm glad that you get to see the good side. I should ammend my statement to reflect that I'm referring to kids aged 17-21. I thank God that the younger ones are still a bit young to have formed such deep rooted negativity. They are clay that if put into the correct hands, can be molded & formed into incredible adults. That's a good thing & byou are to be commended for taking on a job that's full of minefields & difficult to say the least. My email address is juicefree@hotmail.com. Your comments will be most welcome. Thanks for the ray of hope! We all need it. (Message edited by Juicefree20 on May 13, 2004) |

No, but I was about to KDUBYA...you beat me to it! MESSAGE FROM A BLACK MAN is by the Temptations...I think it is on the PSYCHEDELIC SOUL album (if not correct me), unless Motown also cut it on the Spinners as the label were famous for cutting the same songs on different artists. Also, may I mention WAR by the late great Edwin Starr. |

Miss Mystique, isn't this a swell, worthwhile SDF file? "Message From A Black Man" surprises a lot of people that it was originally recorded and released as a single on Motown's VIP Records, prior to "It's A Shame", in 1970 by....... (drumroll) .......: THE SPINNERS. I possess the single. "War" by EDWIN STARR was already mentioned on my list of "100 Message Songs". An incredible message song and powerfully-delivered record.
