I just picked "Ultimate Phyllis Hyman" last night. What a vocalist! I can't even put into words what this woman could do to a song. She's peerless. It saddened me thinking she silenced herself by her own hand. That aside, would any one on the board like to share their favorite Phyllis cuts with the rest of us. I'll follow. . .

Also, "Old Friend" and his collaboration with Norman Connors "Betcha By Golly, Wow". The up-tempo favorite is "Screaming At The Moon". Peace & Soul Food (and RIP for this true soulful woman)} |

LOvechild, if you haven't heard it you must add to your list MAGIC MONA from the original soundtrack of the movie THE FISH THAT SAVED PITTSBURGH... it is only available on vinyl at this time (and pretty rare even like that!) but it is a pure masterpiece... LOL) It just so happens that my record boxes are still piled up ceiling high because I haven't yet found the cash to finish the music room I have been working on... but as soon as it is finished I will finally open those crates and burning that LP (or if I have a double copy of this one it'll be in the mail) will be on my top priority list of things to do!!! Hi again, soulful folks! I got the CD "Phylladelphia. The Gamble-Huff Years" edited by UK Westside. In the linner notes have a extract of some comments by Nancy Wilson i the P.H. album "I Refuse To Be Lonely": (...) One of the great voices of our times... For those of you fortunate enough for have... any of her offerings, you posses a sound that is only heard once in a lifetime. Listen to the voice, the lyrics and understand the body of work Phyllis has left for us. Peace & Soul Food |

Hey, don't forget about William Hart's beautiful Follow Every Dream from The Fish Soundtrack! I need a little time to focus on my thoughts about Phyllis. She died here in New York & it was around my birthday. I just remember the shock that I felt when I heard the news, it felt like someone punched me in the stomach. I'll always remember seeing her & The Whispers at Westbury Music Fair. I remember the saxophonist Bobby Miletello playing the hell out of that sax. Phylis had laryngitis that night, but, she sipped some tea, kicked off her shoes & gave us all that she had. She asked us to forgive us & explained that she wasn't feeling too well. That crowd didn't care, we applauded her even louder for her efforts, she was giving us all that she had to give & it couldn't have been easy for her. She didn't stomp around the stage, pouting. She kept it nice & easy & brought us into an intimate show, it could've been her living room. Harold Nicholas came down the aisle & brought her a bunch of long stemmed roses. I just remember that she was a trouper. Her beauty & voice still resonates in my mind. And, no, she never received the recognition & fame that she so richly deserved. Regardless, her legacy will continue to live on. Wherever there's lovers of true passionate & quality singing, Phyllis will be there always! RIP Phyllis, the music industry was truly unworthy of you! |

I just LOVE and ADORE Phyllis Hyman...it was so sad that she ended her own life like that... My favorites from her: NO ONE CAN LOVE YOU MORE UNDER YOUR SPELL (think the band and I want to work on that) DON'T TELL ME TELL HER SOMEWHERE IN MY LIFETIME (would love to do that song...was supposed to do that song when me and a group of us girls was to open for Blue Magic at the Egg in Albany, but the leader in the group changed my song to CAUGHT UP IN THE RAPTURE by Anita Baker...didn't mind it, but I really wanted to do that song...we never opened for them however) YOU KNOW HOW TO LOVE ME (thinking of doing that song as well) BETCHA BY GOLLY WOW LOVING YOU LOSING YOU WE BOTH NEED EACH OTHER JUST ANOTHER FACE IN THE CROWD |

I recently found a stash of old magazines, including Black Sports and Players. (LOL) Flipping the pages of Players, I noticed Greg Abbott's "Celebrity Speakout !" column...and the question ("Who in history would you like to have met ?") posed to the celebs. Well, Phyllis Hyman was a Players celeb. that month, and her answer was: "I would like to have met Judy Garland. I find myself wanting to know what it was that made her so unhappy. I would like to know why she took pills to lift her up and other pills to bring her back down, why she drank so much. I would like to know why she did the things she did." This from the Jan. 1978 issue. Damn....! |

Charise: I did...and at the "perfect" venue: "Concerts By The Sea" in Redondo Beach, Ca. It was a very intimate place, with every seat being a great one. The sound system was also excellent. She was simply awesome...after about one song I was just "Lost in the sauce". What a voice ! What stage presence ! She was "alla that" as an entertainer....and beautiful too. I swear...the ladies had to get sponges to take their dates home, cause she made ya "Feel like a snowball in the summertime, baba...melt all over ya". I was almost in "What wife ?" mode...LOL |

Phyllis Hyman is one of the select few artist I know, who simply couldn't do wrong. Admittedly, some of her ballads were a bit smaltzy and MOR'ish but her voice still made them into masterpieces. Over the years I've never had any luck finding her "Prime Of My Life" set. Is that on par with the rest?? |

Wonder B, LoveChild & 1Wicked- If you type Phyllis Hyman in your browser & click on discography, there is a goldmine!!! Phyllis Hyman-Between the Heartaches was released about 2 mths ago as an import and "Magic Mona" is on there! K-Bee, Prime Of My Life cd is there, as well. One of my favorite songs on this cd is "When You Get Right Down To It" "Meet Me On The Moon is a killer, too!!!! For me, I think one of her defining moments in song has to be, the self-penned "Gonna Make Changes" from the Somewhere In My Lifetime LP(Can we still say LP)You all are making we want to go pull out all my LPs by Phyllis, her voice was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! |

I'm SHOCKED that no one on this thread has mentioned my favorite Phyllis Hyman tune (and her very first solo hit single from 1976) 'Baby (I'm Gonna Love You)'! That's my song! It should have been an even bigger hit than it was. I love the horn chart and heavy drums on it and Miss Hyman sings the hell out of this song like she did everything else. She gets deep inside of every tune she sings and makes sense of the lyrics. Some of my other P.H. favorites are 'You Know How To Love Me', 'Ain't You Had Enough Love', 'We Both Need Each Other' (with Norman Connors) and the definative 'Betcha By Golly Wow' (with Norman Connors) IMO. I ignored Phyllis' work for a long time because all of the tunes I happened to hear by her at first were much too Pop/MOR for my taste. Phyllis sang the hell out of EVERYTHING that was handed to her but songs like 'I Refuse To Be Lonely', 'Old Friend' and 'Somewhere In My Lifetime' (produced by Barry Manilow OF COURSE!) did not do her justice. Songs like that allowed Phyllis to stretch out vocally but the arrangements are just so overblown, bland, soulless and saccharine! I didn't discover her excellent work with Norman Connors and Mtume until much later. Phyllis sounded best singing Soul-Jazz and sophisticated R&B. Maybe if she didn't get saddled with all of those overblown Pop ballads she could've stuck to the Jazzy R&B that she did best and had the career that Anita Baker had in the 80's! Phyllis was a much better singer than Anita. Soul Sister, no offense but the picture that you posted of Miss Hyman makes me sad. All of those later pics of the overweight Phyllis right before she passed upset me because I know that she was depressed about the way her career was going and other personal issues. I know that you didn't mean any harm Soul Sis but I'd much rather remember the happy, glamorous and slender Phyllis Hyman that's in all of those early publicity shots before her manic depression got the best of her. I, too, saw Phyllis Hyman live at either the Strand or Concerts By The Sea in Redondo Beach, CA (after her performance I didn't know where I was -- maybe in heaven!!). She was so great -- her personality, her looks, and, of course, her voice. She took requests and I asked her to sing "Betcha By Golly Wow." She blew us all away. I still cry when I hear her music. Hey Rodmann; Sorry it made you sad. The only comment I have regarding Phyllis' later in life 'look' is that we all change as we mature and most of us put on weight, I'd just say, if, you loved her, love her with all her faults and weaknesses too, if you truly love someone it doesn't matter what their appearance is, they are still a beautiful person which comes from within. Without sincerity we have nothing. Accept Phyllis at all stages of her life in whatever state she was in cause there is a rhyme & reason for everything that sometimes only God knows. Have a blessed day, S.S. |

Yes Charise. I ought to have posted that album... I have the Sophisticated Ladies album and even better I was able to buy during one of my trips to Japan the laserdisc of the show so I can see her every time I want and she is just fantastic... I don't think I miss a single LP or 45 of her discography... I am a real fan despite the fact that I was never able to see her live... I don't think she ever made it to France... if she did, then I will be depressed for a looooong time!!! Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go!

Soul Sister, you're absolutely right! People should love one another in all stages of our lives. I guess my issue with the pic isn't really with her weight but it's just the fact that it was taken so close to the end of her life during her battle with manic depression. It just so happens that she had put on a lot of weight during this time. Those 90's pics of Phyllis are just eerie. It's the equivalent of an Elvis Presley fan wanting to remember the 50's and 60's Elvis instead of the bloated and drugged Elvis of the mid 70's right before he lost his life. By the way Soul Sis, I took another look at the pic you shared and Phyllis was still lovely. No matter what weight she was she was always dressed to the nines! Walt B, thanks. I would also tell you to find The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh soundtrack. If you don't have it, it also contains a very nice William Hart ballad: Follow Every Dream. There's also Chance Of A Lifetime by The Four Tops. I'm glad to see Magic Mona getting some props, as it was on the soundtrack of this silly movie (I liked it, how could I not, as my favorite B-Ball player & name-sake, Dr J starred in it?). Phyllis' birthday was the day before mine & I still remember the shock that I felt, when I heard the news. Johne: I know how you feel. All of these years later, Phyllis still can do that to us. What a loss & what a under-appreciated artist! She deserves better! To leave you with something positive, here's a link regarding a function that her brother has coming up soon: http://www.emediawire.com/rele ases/2004/4/prweb116712.htm The link to Melinda Hymans website is non-functional! |

Hi John!!! Just wanted to try to find something positive from the tragedy. Perhaps, through her passing, others lives will be saved. Now that would be a Great legacy. |

I believe if Phyllis we're alive she'd would've been on The Mother's Day Concert that rolled into town, which featured Enchantment, Jean Carne, Michael Hendreson and Roy Ayers at The Armory. Don Chgo, Il |
