Are there any CDs highlighting her best recordings? The only CDs I have are from her 2 Broadway shows: "Hair" and "Purlie" [Just listen to her sing "I Got Love"!]. Does anyone here know if "Timbuktu" was ever recorded? This show starred Melba and Eartha Kitt and was directed by Geoffrey Holder in 1978.

I had mentioned this before, but Weldon and I co produced Melba back in 1972 when she was "between labels" . It was some great stuff and she sang her little butt off(toothache and all) but it never did see the light of day. |

I went to 'TIMBUKTU' in the late 70s (me thinks)and was so damn pissed the nite I went. MELBA MOORE was replaced by I forget who. Although Ms EARTHA KITT and her 'RECIPE' were magnificent ....I really was there to support Charli's mom.I had seen her prior at BERKLEE performance ctr....and she blew the house down at PAUL'S MAll with the little skull cap on ...cute as a button. This performance started my love affair with the doe eyed beauty. She was promoting the luscious VAN McCoy produced lp THIS IS IT which featured her version of Patti Jo's ' Make Me Believe In You' and 'FREE' ....etc .each song was fantastico. My dear departed friend would see her dining at McDonalds between shows on matinee day with her precious little babe..and he bought the daughter a stuffed animal and Melba was so grateful and receptive and just plain lovely! My friend was enthralled with her after his encounter.I in turn loved the story . Making me love the peachie MELBA that much more. 'THAT MUCH MOORE'...I have her doing a guest appearance on an old HUBERT LAWS lp.I mean old too. Luvvvv her!...LEAN ON ME!oh yeah ! that too ! and 'The way you make me feel' and 'You stepped into my life'and 'Where did you ever go?'.... |

I have the spanish edition of the Buddah LP "A Portrait Of Melba" (without credits except producers and writers) produced by another two Philly masters, McFadden & (RIP) Whitehead and have a very good latin feel, especially "Standing Right Here". hey, Lady Mystique if you can make the same that Melba, I can make this (i was waiting the bus with a friend) Peace & Soul Food!} |

I recently bought a used copy of Melba Moore's 1980 LP "Closer" which has a great cover version of Lulu's "I Could Never Miss You More Than I Do" on it. I never knew thios LP existed until I saw it in the bin.... |

I thought Lulu's song came out around 1982--maybe Melba had the original!Love that song. What exactly happened to Melba? Not to dig up dirt but other than a bitter divorce I dont understand why she had vanished(I know she is doing some stuff now). I read an article years ago that said she was on welfare in Florida at that time. At one point she said she was going to write a book but her ex had a gag order. Very mysterious. |

My favorite Melba Moore recordings were featured on the " Cotton Comes To Harlem" soundtrack. The opening of the movie she sings, " Ain't Now It's Gonna Be, Black Enough For Me". Plus, her Budda cuts, " This Is It b/w Lean On Me". |

Hi again, soulful friends! Somebody knows what other Melba Moore's albums produced by McFadden & Whitehead have appart from his "A Portrait Of Melba"? I got the single side "A" Love's Comin' At Ya (produced by Paul Lawrence Jones III) b/w Let's Go Back To Lovin' (produced-writed by McFadden & Whitehead). This tune is not from the album named before. Peace! |

Melba Moore is tha bomb! The lady is into Gospel these days (and I have nothing against a good gospel tune every now and then) but I prefer to hear her sing contemporary songs. Wonder B, where did you find the information in ref to the reissue on CD of Melba's "The Other Side Of The Rainbow" and what are the other titles of Capitol's MASTERS OF FUNK & SOUL SERIES ? Many thanks in advance! Speaking of Melba... Here are a few negatives of the photo shoot for some of Melba's lp, check the pics for her This Is It session, a stunning MELBA! Wonder B, many thanks for the detailed information! You must be that nice guy who outbid me all the time when I try to obtain presskits/photos on eBay. HAHAHA It's all good my maan. I'm only playing with you, a Dutch joke you dig? (and a bad one too). BIG SMILE! More seriously, good luck writing the sleeve notes and thanks again for the information. Although I have all albums on vinyl I will buy them again because I've always wanted a digital copy of some of these albums, especialy Mystic Merlin, featuring a very young Freddie Jackson (during an interview I showed the LP cover to Freddie and I never saw a man laugh this much). Melba's 'The other Side of...' is another classic and a warm welcome. Infact there are so many.... (although some of these albums we're previously reissued in Japan) i'm possitive that a lot of people never bought these reissues based on the import price. Gene Dunlap Band, Mr. Nice guy...WOW !! Thanks again for the info and good luck (and be gentle to me DOUBLE BIG SMILE). Peace, Andreas Hellingh www.thesoulofamsterdam.com |

Yes Andreas... what about those pics you were supposed to sell me after using them? LOL Another french joke! About the Japanese reissues they are not of the same quality sound wise. I have heard the final product of this upcoming series and let me tell you, some of the stuff in there you have never heard like this before (and God knows I am not a CD fan at all) THis has been done in a top of the line studio and every care has been taken as to respect the original album. I forgot to mention that along the sound, the series is aimed at collectors too, with special features like front and back of the original record sleeves in respected LP format, plus additional photos, all original credits, and complete discography, and new liner notes written by specialists (Rickey Vincent has been working on a few volumes too). It doesn't get any better than that (at least on CD LOL) plus they'll be released under a nice price tag... Who could ask for anything more!? Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! I'm still working on my new website and I haven't been able to use the pics yet - they are still ALL yours. Which reminds me... drop me a line with your details and I will contact you when I'm finished (if only I had two pair of hands) SMILE. Back to the reissues... I extremly happy to hear that the albums will be available at a mid price. Especialy if the sound quality is top notch and the original artwork pre-served. Like you said, you can't ask for anything else! Speaking of artwork. I'm sure you bought the re-re-re issues (SMILE AGAIN) of the SOS Band series (Tabu). Does the front artwork in this new series have a border on top of the front cover (I would buy them anyway though I hope the front cover is plain like the original album cover)! Thanks again and let's keep in touch. VIVA LA FRANCE (and them french ladies) No offence to our fellow female SD users :-)) :-)) Andreas |

They are suppoosed to hit the streets at 9.90 or a little less, the price is not yet fixed... I haven't bought the SOS Band reissues because I avoid buying CD's (since I listen to 99% pure vinyl LOL) but I do buy digital stuff when there's stuff like the SITSOM or other stuff unavailable otherwise. Yes there will be a border on the left hand side of the cover because otherwise it is impossible to respect the original album cover (LP's are square and CD's rectangular! It's a math problem! LOL) It will probably look like this : Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! (Message edited by Wonder B on May 21, 2004) |

Ok I understand the size problem though I know it can be done. The artwork of the Japanese CD reissues are supreme. Let me give a few examples... Here's Dayton's 'Feel The Music' CD with the front cover still in the tray; When I pull out the front cover then the artwork lookes like this; Hang on... I will scan a few more pics. |

Yes it's nice but if they fit the cover on a full size CD booklet they HAD to crop it somewhere... or distort the image to fit it in... That's why the guy who does the series I am talking about has chosen to do it the way he does. And he should know cos' he is one of the leading expert in reissues in the Jazz world and probably the biggest black music collector in Europe and one of the top 5 in the world... LOL (also former head of Motown France! Here's artwork of the LP by SPUNK which I remasterd and transfered onto CD (something I don't love doing because each LP takes about 2 months to remaster, however it keeps me off the street LOL). I guess Capitol does not have a big budget in regards to artwork (which I can understand if they want to sell it for mid price). By all means... I don't have any complaints, i'm a perfectionist that's all. LOL I cut of a little bit of the left side (or right, I can't remember) of the LP (and enlarged the cover) so it would fit in a jewel case. Front cover of my home made Spunk CD (100% original artwork): Back cover:

Yes they have a good budget but my friend's point of view is the one of an ultimate collector (like him)... he wants ALL of the original art cover to be seen, so there is NO other way he can do it ... If you scan his CD jackets and crop the left margin you will be able to have the exact LP cover (front & back) no other reissue gives you that... And wait (I already said it LOL) 'til you hear the sound... that's where the big money went too... Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! (Message edited by Wonder B on May 21, 2004) |
