I was just reading that Sony is now looking to merge with another label to increase profits and reduce competition. Pretty soon, we will have almost a monopoly with boy and girl bands of the day. It is sad as the state of music sales should tell the major labels that something needs to change.

The days of an independent label are long gone which is bad as they provided musical competition to the majors to produce better music. Could a Motown, Stax, Brunswick, etc. start today? Not easily as the majors buy them out when things get good. As well, could a group of ugly singers who sound perfect make it? No because looks are very important for most of the manager/record label created groups that knew each other for five minutes before they entered the studio.

Are the days of The Dells and Four Tops (up to when Levi had to leave and Lawrence died)over where the same group can be together for 40+ years? Are the days that new genuine music can be created even if you and your group happen to be ugly? Can an independent label ever make it?

The music industry has created bad music which made a buck but no longer does. Maybe there can be a new musical era...

I feel ya, Clay, we can't wait for it, we can't look for it, we gotta MAKE it. THE PEOPLE still have power!! They juat have forgotten. I'm encouraged by what happened with William Hung! Guy got zero talent but lotta heart, and people picked up on that and responded. So it's possible that somebody's sick of being told what they should like!

I think good music, and maybe even some great music is being made now, and will always be made. I think that the chances are very slim that such music will enjoy the kind of large audiences that we tend to conflate with existence in the music game. Just because I don't hear it on commercial radio or see the title in a Billboard chart doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't good or even great.

As a DJ/Musician I see a lot of acts that have large followings but they dont have radio airplay...Groups like The Soul Of John Black, Dewele, Cody Chestnutt, Yesterday's New Quintet,etc..Its out there but its up to The People to support and be the tatsemakers...

As long as you have folks like Paula Abdul judging music and robot radio stations..things can only get better or worse.
Its up to the people.

We gotta keep it movin.

Like Curtis,
I too will "stay a believer"

PS: it will never be the same as we know it but it can only get better or worse.

Frankly, I don't think that it can ever be the same. When I was coming up in the 60s & 70s, there was true passion for the music. With technology advances that allows anyone with a computer, a keyboard & a sampler to do it themselves, it's a completely different ballgame.

Many schools no longer have music programs due to cutbacks. There's next to no incentive for kids to learn how to play instruments, when they can simply load up loops & create songs in that manner. They're not learning to create & learn music, they're being taught to COPY music. Where's the new sounds coming from when they're simply regurgitating the same old, same old??? The latest "BREAKTHROUGH" is the use of speeding up vocal samples, until the voice sounds like Alvin The Chipmunk. Is that really progress???

Furthermore, kids today have far more choices that we had in those glorious days of the 60s & 70s. Video games, DVDs, malls, Cable, all of these things usurp a kids time these days. As a result of all of this instant gratification, kids simply don't have much of an attention span. Music simply takes time to learn & to understand. This generation is simply the most impatient ever.

One other factor that can't be overlooked is the times. Back in the 60s & 70s, there was more of a family type thing happening. There was a greater sense of community & certainly, respect. There were common causes & goals that created a larger sense of unity. There were social factors that created unity.

We had the civil rights movement, the women's rights movement & Vietnam that served to pull people together. Today, I see complacency. Folks have forgotten just where we came from & what struggle is. Today's youth take things for granted, that were not a given back in those days. Today, most folks walk around as though brain dead & totally unaware of anything but bullshit & immediate satisfaction. A listen to today's music, a view of today's "entertainment": TV & movies & a glance at the paper shows where today's society stands. It's simple, mindless bullshit that sells today. The true fear factor is that they fear that one day folks will wake up & realize just how stupid they think we all are.

So, they continue to innundated us with bull & placate our minds with totally useless crap, to the extent that we now find show like The Bachelor to be really, really great entertainment! Quality is not it's own reward, it's shock value & glitz that dominates. No one want to think anymore, no one wants to challenge themselves anymore. Everyone follows the status quo & wanders aimlessly in the quest of "keeping it real"

America's standards have been dummied down, WAY down! With this being the norm, how could we ever go back to those days of quality??? That's simply not the way of the world anymore & we're all the poorer for it!

Well, I feel that there will be a new era of music and it will come out of Detroit once again.

People are tired of listing to sampled, and non-artitistic music. People enjoy good quality music because it helps soothes pain, sorrow, heartbreak, and makes you fall in love.

As far as another major independent label emerging. I think there will be several who can compete with Universal, Sony, & Warner Bros, including the one I am going to start here in Detroit.

I have a plan for success and with the help of others and my great music mind, I am a shoe-in to be a dominate force in the music industry.

I am for certain that there will be a label that will provide all listeners with a great feel in music that we all have hoped for.

The days of quality music are at hand. Watch out, there will be a change coming soooooon.

Waymon
