Excellent show this time around Barry! My favorites were Donald Height's 'Don't Let Me Down' and Doris Duke's 'Please Come Back'. I've never heard The Beatles' version of 'Don't Let Me Down' but I can't believe that one of their songs could sound SO SOULFUL! I've never heard that Doris Duke track either but it makes me want to go out and get her whole 1975 "Legend In Her Own Time" album on Contempo! Faith, Hope & Charity's cover of Doris Troy's 'Just One Look' was also a nice treat. I've seen that groups records around through the years but this is the first time I've ever actually heard one of their recordings. It's great that you are kind enough to give us some info on the songs because most of the artists you feature are pretty obscure. Thanks a lot Barry! |

Thanks for your comments Rod.. another thread talks about Radio Stations playing same old stuff.. and the well known tracks most people have anyway...my aim.. get listeners to hear rarities..but am I banging my head against the wall??..surely all soul lovers want to discover the unknowns.. and classic soul...not a nu-soul or hip-hop in sight!!! |

To continue... Do some members here..not listen.. cos I play rarities...if I listed 50% well known tracks..would that make a difference(I won't.. don't worry..lol).. but surely..you can hear the well known stuff anywhere...and that's what we are tired of with modern radio. At my Radio station.. I have a free hand....otherwise.. I would not do it

Barry, I'm a young guy and after growing up with a steady diet of the "Oldies Radio" format I thought that Soul music consisted of nothing more than 60's Motown, 'Respect' and 'The Twist'. Years later I found out that was untrue and I discovered "Deep Soul" nuggets like the ones that you play on your shows. Now I prefer to listen to those rare and overlooked gems. How many more times can a person sit through 'Heatwave' and 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'? I do notice that the majority of this forum's members favor the same old Motown acts and songs and they will continue to do so for the rest of their lives. There's nothing wrong with that. This site is called Soulful DETROIT! I can only speak for myself when I say that after hearing artists like Howard Tate, Little Milton, Judy Clay and Linda Jones it's very difficult for me to get excited about the same old cutesy-wutsy Pop tunes like 'Baby Love', 'Sugar Pie Honey Bunch', 'My Girl', 'Tears Of A Clown', etc. I personally LOVE your radio shows Barry but I think that they may be a little too "Deep Soul" and Non-Motown oriented for the average SDF member. Thanks Rod for your kind comments.. I'll just say.. the first half of the shows are mid-tempo(Jimmy Ruffin on the last show, Temptations on the next)..the next 30 minutes the Deep Soup Cellar(I have some listeners who want 60 Minutes of this!). Food, wine and soul...you gotta try so you'll know...never say never.. you'll end up being only part satisfied!..but I take your point Rod.. my playlists may scare some people... Barry
