Great Sunday Morning All, I just wanted to give Mr. Masekela a shoutout & up. I used to love his sound - and especially - "Grazin in the Grass." My God! We were tearing it up in Germany off of that one. That one was done up by "The Friends of Distinction", though. But I remember his version too. I saw a bit on Howard University TV about his sister recently - and when she mentioned she was his sister - then I rememered her too. Her name is Miriam Makeba? Great interview, by the way. What a great Jazz musician Mr. Masekela is, indeed. Surely, he was influenced by Louis Armstrong, and likewise, he has influenced other aspiring musicians. Bravo to him and his legacy. http://www.dougpayne.com/hmbio .htm |

Hey All, Weldon - Weldon - Weldon! Well - lookie here - lookie here! Now see that's what I'm talkin' 'bout. I check back in after taking my macaroni & cheese out the oven - and after tending to my collard greens - to find to my great pleasure what you have contributed to this thread. Thank you a heap for posting that striking picture of Mr. Masekela. I appreciate it. Thanks also for providing the correct name of his sister. Yes Barbara is her name. She seems like a wonderful - articulate and thoughtful woman. Do tell - by the way - how tight you two were at one time. X-cuse me and my nosey self. LOL! Thanks again - my friend. a great man Mr. Masekela ,whose music opened a whole wave of great artists to come such as Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango, etc.. Big, big shout out to a gentlemen who is EXTREMLY under rated and is a personal hero and a very cool gentleman by the name of BIG BLACK. I also loved the material he cut with Herb Alpert and The Crusaders.

My fave Masekela jam might be 'Mace & Grenades', both 'Promise of a Future' & 'Masekela' are such hot albums, though... I've seen him twice in the last few years, he's back on more of a straight ahead jazz tip than the more soulful sounds of the late 60's/ early 70's. Anyone hear his 'Presenting Hedzolleh Sounds' or the lp he produced for the UNI lp by Johannesburg Street Band? Nice albums, both of 'em... as I post on what I think is Nelson Mandela's birthday (possibly his inaugeration day?)- offa the Black History thread in 'Discuss Detroit's Non-Detroit Issues board... |
