Have been listening to the first 45 (or thereabouts) by the Vibrations on Bet records 0001 titled 'so blue' as far as I know was cut whilst still in L.A. and distributed by them which led to the attention of Chess records no less. Leading to a contract and hitting nationally with there self penned danc 45 'the watutsi'. When they were still in LA and getting a good name around the clubs/one nighter circuits etc they were known as The Marathons........... as I know it they hit with a 45 titled 'peanut butter' as the marathons. before going on to philly and various labels etc did they actually record as this name? if so how many did they cut and which label etc? apologies especially to bobby if this was all mentioned weeks ago on another vibratin' vibrations thread. regards mel-o-delphia |

They didnt work as the Marathons. That was a one off record with Arvee records as a "ghost" record. Chess found out it was them and put a cease and desist order (capice) on it. They were, however the jayhawks on Flash with the original version of Stranded in the jungle which they also wrote. |

Was Bet an L.A. label? I had heard that the group was originally from San Francisco. Or, had they come down to L.A. already as The Jayhawks; recorded as the Jayhawks; and then changed their name to Vibrations, and recorded for Bet in L.A.? After the cease and desist order, Chess released "Peanut Butter" on their Argo label. After "So Blue", where were their Chess releases recorded?-at Chess in Chicago?-or were some recorded in L.A.? |

Robb, The Vibrations were not from Frisco. They were based in LA. Carl Fisher is originally from Houston. James Johnson, Dave Govan and Don Bradley were in the Jayhawks. Ricky Owens was with the Six Teens on Flip Carl Fisher joined up with them at the onset of the Vibrations So Blue era. Not sure about the bet label, although I know is was a tiny label out of South central L.A. May have been owned by the person who ran the 5-4 ballroom where the guys worked a lot. |

Thanks, Bobby. I bought most (if not all) the Jayhawks, Six Teens, Marathons and Vibrations' records(through their Neptune period), and saw them appear, too. But never knew much about them. I do remember Carl Fisher's name. |

The Vibrations are from South Central and Watts. Larry Montgomery of The Vows (out of Chi) told me, and visited the fellas when his group performed there in LA. That's all I know. |

I just got off the phone with Carl Fisher, the lead singer with the Vibrations. He is doing fine and living near Houston Texas. He tells me that he will be posting on SD soon. He and I have always been an excellent writing team and I am sending him some music to write some of his wonderful lyrics to and I just know it will be great. |

Hi Bobby Don Here, That sounds great. The Vibes are one of my favorite groups, and yes my friend Larry of The Vows/The Major IV would be estatic of knowing this Eli. You know David M., said that he wanted to make this site into something professional into meeting, posting and corresponding with singers, vocalgroups and musicians of the likes. Because alot of these acts have crossed paths before at one time. Bobby, my friend has always wondered about him and the other fellows, and probally himself have thought of his contempories in the biz back in the day. The Vibes we're class. What do you think Bobby Eli? |

Hey Don, I had the good fortune of playing guitar and conducting for the Vibrations from November of 1967 until around 1973 or so. It was one of the most fun times of my life and the guys gave me my very first opportunity to see the world, literally. We played all the major theaters on the so called "chitlin circuit" many times and eventually wound up in Las Vegas! We played all of the English clubs which later became famous for the Northern Soul explosion such as the Twisted Wheel, Blackpool Mecca,Torch, etc. Carl and I wrote many songs together and Lord willing will now continue to do so. |

Hey Bobby, That's good to know Carl, I met them was I was a kid during the Chess and Okeh days. Carl's face I remember vividly as yesterday. Also, can you tell your ladee Vonnie, that I can't wait for Billy Butler come on board from time to time, even if he doesn't post much.... at least stay close by. I was wondering did The Vibe's records sold well in their hometown in Cali, Bobby? |
