Isnt this the original name of Midnight Plane to Georgia? What was Cissy's version like? Some industrious hi tech person should splice the two together--wouldnt it be great to hear Gladys and Cissy go at it? |

I seem to recall that in Gladys' biography, she stated that Midnight Train To Georgia was written for her. I, myself had read previously about the original version, written by Jim Weatherly, if memory serves me correctly. Was Cissy's version so obscure that Gladys didn't know of its existence?? Why was Gladys unaware of the original version, any ideas?? |

Jimmy, I've got Cissy's original version of 'The Midnight Train To Georgia'. I don't think that it's better or worse than Gladys' but it is a nice alternative to Gladys' overplayed hit version. It's one of Cissy's best solo recordings. Unfortunately she didn't get many songs worthy of her talent during her solo career IMO. Another excellent song and my favorite solo Cissy Houston tune is 'Nothing Can Stop Me' from 1975. It's a very moody Soul ballad with Cissy doing her own background vocals and she appears to be singing a duet with herself. Juice, I've also wondered why Gladys failed to mention Cissy's recording in her book. "Midnight Train' couldn't possibly been written for her because Cissy recorded it over a year before her! The way that Gladys sings her version makes me think that she used Cissy's record as a demo. For some reason I'm just not buying the theory that it was so obscure that she knew nothing about it. Another thing that has always baffled me is the fact that Cissy Houston's version is always credited as the original but they also say that the tune was originally known as 'The Midnight Plane To Houston'. Cissy recorded it as 'The Midnight Train To Georgia'. Maybe Cissy's version is just the first to be recorded under the title of 'The Midnight Train To Georgia'. |

Rodmann, you're right. The song was originally recorded by its composer Jim Weatherly as MIDNIGHT PLANE TO HOUSTON. Cissy's was the first version that used the title MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA. The Gladys/Cissy saga is a rather interesting one. Gladys has always told the story that she and the Pips changed the song because they didn't like to fly, and they had never been to Houston. On the other hand, they traveled by train a lot and they were from Georgia. Yet it is a fact that Cissy recorded the song first. Writer David Nathan said that he hopes to get Gladys and Cissy in the same room and find out the real deal. |

Hello Everyone. This is a fascinating thread as it is a question that I've often asked myself. I absolutely adore virtually everything that GLADYS KNIGHT has ever recorded yet I can't understand why she always tells this story about her changing the title of the song when I know that CISSY HOUSTON recorded it before her!! Incidentally, have any of you out there heard CISSY HOUSTON's storming version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" on Janus, from 1971/2. Absolutely fantastic to listen to, great to dance to and it should have sold in the millions!! Roger |
