I have a few questions that I need some serious Temps fans to weigh in on. Any help will be much appreciated! First, did Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams release any material pre-Detroit when they were with the Primes in Alabama? Second what happened to Elbridge Bryant? Did he release stuff after Ruffin steppped in to the mix? Lastly, what is the Temps/Pirates release like/how available is this release/what does it fetch on the record collector market? |

To my knowledge, Eddie and Paul did not record anything as the Primes, neither in Birmingham or in Detroit. After Elbridge Bryant was fired from the group, rumor is that he was in the group, the Dramatics for a while, but then left them too. He died in the mid '70s of cirrohsis (sp) of the liver and is buried in Florida. The songs that the Tempts recorded as the "Pirates" were "Mind Over Matter" and "I'll Love You Till I Die". Eddie had the lead on "Mind", an upbeat song, while Paul handled the leads on "Love You Till I Die", a song with a doo-wop kind of thing going on. Don't know how much the 45 release is on the collectors' market but I can imagine it is quite a bit... |

Is the "Mind over Matter" the same one released by Nolan Strong on Fortune? Thanks a million for the info and quick reply! |

Hi! When asked the Dramatics boys they say Al never was a member of the Dramatics, not even for a brief moment. I can always re-check. Best regards Heikki |

What a coincidence. I was in Thomasville during the MLK Weekend. Thomasville is @ 20 miles from my parents birthplace and on my last day there my sister and I rode out to Thomasville just to see what it was like and stopped and had breakfast. Yikes! I just had a though! My ggrandmother was a Bryant whose roots were on a plantation in Thomas County where Thomasville is. I wonder if Elbridge and I are distant relatives? Hmmmmmmm |

Hi Heikki, Wasn't Elbridge Bryant a member of that Dramatics group on Mainstream who were also billed as The Dramatic Experience? There were two singles on Mainstream issued around '75 / '76. I'll check later to see if I have any definite info. This would've been around the time that the real group were being billed as "Ron Banks and The Dramatics" Davie |

Thanks, Sis! I am only relaying what I've heard, which is that Al Bryant was buried in Gainesville, Florida. Thanks for the correct information. And yes, "Mind Over Matter" is the same song that Nolan Strong recorded previously. (Message edited by nyc_diva on May 08, 2004) |

NYC Diva - You are welcome. You would be surprised that quite a few of the information you heard, or read, is totally inaccurate. Do not rely on third hand information unless you get it from the horses mouth. If that horse is dead, get it directly from his immediate family. In most cases that is impossible, therefore, just relate the information in a third hand context, such as: "I read in so and so's book.." "Someone told me...." And such as: "Although I saw on the Dramatic's cd label that Elbridge Bryant was a previous member of the group, I am not sure, as that is the only place I've seen it." I realize even the label company is sometimes incorrect because they get some of the info from second, third, and forth hand sources. In the case of the Dramatic's cd, instead of Elbridge Bryant, the name should have been "Elbert Wilkins." If we do not correct it everytime it is stated, it will go down in history as being correct. BTW: My reliable source says that Al Bryant, quit the Temptations. I believe that source because they were there. |

Around the time of Ron Banks & The Dramatics, Barrington Henderson was with the Dramatics for a second. Heikki knows the particulars. |
